Salveo - Southwest Ranch Baked Potato Crisps

Comments:

Southwest Ranch?  Interesting.  We are familiar with Midwest Ranch, and we’ve had our fair share of East and West Coast Ranches, but what exactly is Southwest Ranch?!?  Well, according to someone, somewhere, Southwest Ranch is “ranch, with a kick!”  We can agree with that definition for the most part.

Like we’ve said in regards to all of Salveo’s crisps and chips; they may be brought to us “In Good Health” (which is what Salveo technically means), but in the end, what really matters to most of us (especially here at Chip Review) is if they were brought to us “IN GOOD TASTE”  Well, we are happy to report that these crisps are rather tasty, as well as, being healthy.  We really love it when we come across some baked potato crisps that happen to actually taste better than a lot of the fried potato chips on the market.

OK, back to that confusing Southwest Ranch flavor again.  Like we indicated above, this particular ranch seasoning does get a bit of a lovely kick from the addition of jalapeno peppers.  And, come to think of it now, the combination of jalapeno and ranch, isn’t really that uncommon to us – just calling it “southwest ranch” is!  In fact, now that we think about it, southwest ranch is a little more complex than just chili heat combined with traditional creamy garlic and onion ranch flavors.  There is also a hint of some cheddar cheese notes that add to the overall tangy creaminess.  As well as, the slightest smoky hint (adding even another layer of dimension).

All and all, the flavor really works, especially paired with the light and crispy potato crisps.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Salveo – Tomato Basil Baked Potato Crisps

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Salveo - Tomato Basil Baked Potato Chips

Comments:

Salveo’s Baked Potato Crisps may be brought to us “In Good Health”, but in the end, what really matters to most of us is if they were brought to us “In Good Taste”?  Well, we are happy to relay to you all, that these crisps are both healthy and tasty.  In fact, we have been more than pleased with the large majority of Salveo’s snacks.

So, when we come across some baked potato crisps that happen to be a bit tastier than your average fried potato chips, we are quite thrilled.  Salveo’s Potato Crisps, remind us quite a bit of Lay’s Baked! Potato Crisps, except that Salveo’s crisps are thicker.  Salveo has even opted to mimic Lay’s Baked! hexagonal crisp shape.

The Tomato Basil crisps smell exactly like the cup of marinara sauce that comes with your friendly Italian joint’s bread sticks, or pizza pie.  You know the type we’re talking about, that over seasoned, extra garlicky, and definitely most sweet cup of chunky, reduced down tomato sauce.  Luckily, the crisps do not taste nearly as sweet as they smell.  Rather, we were surprised with loads of powerful, tomato essence, and a punch of garlic.  Followed by lots of oregano, and even a nice, unexpected touch of heat in the background (might that be red pepper flake? We think so).  But, where is the basil??  We aren’t really finding any basil present here at all.

Still, overall the flavor is well balanced, light, fresh and very….dare we say “Summery”.  Although we may not call these crisps very authentic, they are definitely edible, and the crisps are a perfect vehicle for these flavors.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Salveo – Buttery Caramel Multigrain Snackin’ Puffs

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Salveo - Buttery Caramel Multigrain Snackin' Puffs

Comments:

Salveo is the Latin word for “In Good Health”, and Salveo’s Puff are yet another addition to the world of healthier popped chips.  To be completely honest with you, despite all of the tasty popped snacks coming each day, we still seem to hold a slight bias towards this genre, and more often than not we assume that each new popped chip that we taste will not be very good.  Luckily, and to our surprise, Salveo’s Buttery Caramel Multigrain Snackin’ Puffs were actually quite lip-smacking.  In fact, we have been happily surprised with many of Salveo’s popped chips.

Snackin’ Puffs’ texture reminds us of a cross between rice cakes and corn flakes.  The puffs flavor is predominantly corn forward, which compliments and combines well with the buttery caramel seasoning.  Speaking of butter and caramel, were fairly certain that these are the first “chips” we’ve ever tasted with this flavor combination that’s normally used on delicious popcorn.  Everyone at Chip Review was immediately pleasantly surprised with how commanding the buttery caramel flavor was.   Intense, sweet-sweet caramel notes instantly hit our tongues, as they mingled quite nicely with the subtle salty butter seasoning.  Some of the tasters said that the puffs reminded them of eating a slightly salty cereal – minus the milk.  Speaking of salt, if we had one big gripe, it would be that they could use a bit more salt.  The puffs just needed something (salt) to counteract all of the sweetness, and mix-up the monotony.

Overall, we enjoyed these puffs quite a bit, and they are definitely among some of the the better popped “chips” we have tried.  The best part was that we felt so healthy after eating them that we were able to also enjoy some good old fried ones as well!!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Salveo – Southwest Cheddar Multigrain Snackin’ Puffs

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips (notable)

Salveo - Southwest Cheddar Multigrain Snackin' Puffs

Comments:

When you are popular, you’re popular….and right now, popped chips are POPULAR!  Every where we look we see popped this and popped that, and more often than not, we associate this style/technique with two things: 1) a healthier alternative to the more traditional fried version, and 2) (therefore) quite often a less tasty, and desirable product.

Salveo is the Latin word for “In Good Health”, and Salveo’s Puff are yet another addition to the world of healthier popped chips.  To be completely honest with you, we still seem to hold a bias towards this genre, and more often than not we assume that what we are about to taste will not be very good.  Luckily, and to our surprise, Salveo’s Southwest Cheddar Multigrain Snackin’ Puffs weren’t half bad.

Their texture reminds us of a cross between rice cakes and corn flakes, and are very reminiscent of some other cheddar popped chips.  The Snackin’ Puffs flavor is predominantly corn forward, which compliments the cheddar seasoning very well.  Speaking of cheddar, were not quite certain that we would label these chips as Southwest Cheddar, but probably more like Sour Cream & Cheddar, or Smooth Cheddar.  We did not taste any of those typical spicy and tangy southwest seasonings, but rather a smooth, sour creaminess that played well with the salty cheddar cheese, but just wasn’t what we were expecting based on their name.

Chip Review of the day…..

Salveo – Sweet Thai Chili Tater Pops

Rating: ©©© chips (notable)

Salveo - Sweet Thai Chili Tater Pops

Comments:

We’ve speculated a lot over the recently main stream ‘Sweet Thai Chili’ flavor combination.  Here at Chip Review we have declared, with utmost certainty, that the flavor combo works consistently better with potato chips rather than with corn tortilla chips.  However, that doesn’t mean that every once in a while, the combination doesn’t really taste terrific on a potato based crisp, and our theory doesn’t quite pan out.  For example, Salveo’s popped Tater Pops, are not the best illustration of the complex flavor.

Salveo’s take on the sweet and spicy mixture starts off with loads and loads of garlic.  Immediately, one of our tasters said, “Chinese food”, and from that point on, all anyone could think about was sweet and sour sauce (not the first time that a flavor has reminded us of this U.S. “delicacy”).  After garlic, the predominant flavor profile of these crisps was definitely sugar.  These chips are not light on the sweet, and definitely maybe considered by some as too sweet.  We are pleased to say that the chili heat does appear after a while, and then decides to linger, and tickle, the back of your tongue.

Plain and simple, these crisps are all right, in fact, we’d describe them as just that – plain and simple – especially when compared to many other examples of the the flavor combo available today (like a certain direct competitor of these Tater Pops, that we recently re-tasted, and will be reviewing soon).

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

Salveo – Original Sea Salt Baked Potato Crisps

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips (notable)

Salveo - Original Sea Salt Baked Potato Crisps

Comments:

Can we all just admit that we normally do not have as high of hopes for baked chips, as we do for the standard fried chips?

So, when we come across some baked potato crisps that happen to be a bit tastier than your average fried potato chips, we are quite thrilled.  Salveo’s Sea Salt Baked Potato Crisps, remind us very much of Lay’s Baked! Potato Crisps, except that Salveo’s crisps are thicker.  Salveo has even copied Lay’s Baked! standard hexagonal shape.  The crisps are, for lack of a better word, very “crispy” and rather light for having significant body.

What sets these baked potato crisps apart from other similar baked potato chips, or crisps, is the lovely additions of sweetness, and sea salt.  Both opposing seasonings add significant layers of depth that aren’t usually accompanying standard baked potato crisps.  The addition of sweetness compliments the powerful sea salt very nicely, and neither component covers up the splendid potato flavor.  We must say, we thought it was going to be difficult to stop eating these, but then we remembered that they were baked, and we didn’t have to stop!!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

Chip Review of the day…..

Salveo – Nacho Cheese Multigrain Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Salveo - Nacho Cheese Multigrain Tortilla Chips

Comments:

We’ve reviewed a few of Salveo’s other products, but this is the first one that hasn’t been a member of their ‘popped’ variety.  Salveo is Latin for “In Good Health,” and their line of popped chips are obviously a more health conscience option for snacking than traditional potato chips.  With their Nacho Cheese Multigrain Tortilla Chips, Salveo is providing us with a healthier tortilla chip option.

Their tortilla chips are much thicker than traditional tortilla chips, and have a more grainy mouth texture.  We could actually taste the sesame and flax seeds scattered throughout the chips.  The nacho cheese seasoning tasted pretty traditional, or should we say typical.  In fact, we’re pretty sure we mentioned it once before, but let’s just state a well-known chip world fact once again.

Doritos – Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips are THE cheese flavored tortilla chips by which all other cheese flavored tortilla chips are compared.  They have been the ‘ONE’ for as long as Chip Review has been enjoying chips.  No other tortilla chip seems to be able to duplicate Doritos top secret recipe and combination for light, airy, super crispy and super cheesy tortilla chips.  Everyone who eats chips is familiar with them, and we’re pretty sure we would be hard-pressed to find someone who says that they actually dislike them.

Basically, what we are trying to say, is that there are plenty of other brands out there with great flavored tortilla chips, but when it comes to nacho cheese flavored ones, most of them simply taste generic.  Such is the case here with Salveo.  We like their rustic multigrain tortilla chip texture, but when combined with their version of nacho cheese seasoning, all we can think of is……another failed attempt.

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.
