It seems like every time we come across any new type of seasoned pretzels at Chip Review we deem it necessary to compare them against Snyder’s of Hanovers pretzel pieces, or Pretzel Crisps wonderfully flavored crisps. As we have explained in detail in some of our Snyder’s of Hanovers reviews, their technique of using pretzel pieces with lots of porous surface area maximizing seasoning absorption, is pretty brilliant in our opinion. In the case of Pretzel Pete’s pretzels, they simply split the tops of their nuggets, only allowing a minimal amount of potent seasoning absorption (no where near the delicious amount of Snyder’s pretzel pieces).
Pretzel Pete’s Spicy-hot! Sour Cream & Habanero Gourmet Nuggets are not our favorite flavor of Pete’s (that title goes to their Cheddar & Ale flavored nuggets). To be honest, these nuggets just didn’t taste like sour cream at all to us. They were missing that wonderfully sour, twangy edge that we love about most sour cream chips. In fact, these tasted like some generic, neutral, cheese powder in our opinion. We also did not taste any of the habanero chili. That is not to say that these weren’t “Spicy-hot!”, because they were!! These pretzels snuck up on us with a powerful spiciness that lingered for quite some time after we had finished eating them. It’s just, Chip Review believes that habanero is the best flavored chili of them all. When you are really able to taste the flavor of the chili, beyond the heat, it has a lovely floral and fruity, citrusy freshness to it that we just can’t get enough of. But with these pretzel nuggets, we didn’t get any of that.
As always please let us know what you think. Agree or disagree, we want to hear it.
