Here at Chip Review we recently sat down and tasted a bunch of different “plain or original” potato chips.  Like we’ve mentioned numerous times before we tend to sway away from reviewing plain potato chips for a handful of reasons – “not enough to write about, we like seasoning, not enough difference between brands, yada-yada-yada….”.  But, what if we tried a wide range of different brand’s plain potato chips during one tasting?  Would it make it easier for us to distinguish all of the intricate differences?  So, we did, and we think it did.

Although this bag may not lay claim to it, many of Dakota Style’s other chips have the moniker “Industrial Strength” plastered on the face of the bag for all to see, and wonder.  Well, according to Dakota Style Chip’s website Industrial Strength can be described as:

“Well, unlike your average paper-thin, delicate-doily, oh-please-be-gentle-with-me potato chips, Dakota Style potato chips are sliced extra thick. Then we open kettle cook them in cottonseed oil to toughen ’em up. By the time we’re through, you could shingle your roof with these son-of-a-guns.  As you can imagine, a strong, sturdy chip like this has to have a big, bold taste – one that says, “Oh, so this is what a potato chip is supposed to taste like…I had no idea.”” www.dakotastyle.com

So there you have it.  We had always wondered what that meant, and now we all know.  And you know what?  Dakota Style is not joking around with this statement.  Their Original Potato Chips ARE cut extra thick and have a big, bold crunch.  Our jaws, and possibly even our teeth, are still feeling the stress we put on them.  But, just like with so many of their other flavors of chips, the thick absorbent potato slice “sponges” also collect an industrial amount of grease along the way.  Luckily, for one reason or another, we didn’t mind it as much this time.  In fact, when compared to most of the other plain potato chips we were tasting, Dakota Style’s had the most interesting, almost funky, dirty, flavor to them.

Funky-dirty doesn’t sound appealing to you?  Well, when you are tasting as many plain potato chips as we did, anything to help break up the monotony of plain chip after plain chip, is fine by us!!
