McCoy's - Thai Sweet Chicken Ridge Cut Potato Chips

Alright, first and foremost, you know that we here at Chip Review are not averse to meat flavored chips.  In fact, we’ve found a handful that we have really, really loved.  Which is why it is with utmost despair, that we must inform you that we are not fans of McCoy’s Thai Sweet Chicken Crisps.

Truth be told, these crisps were a little too chicken-y for us (which, we find a bit weird since there was no single ingredient among the list that closely resembled anything with wings…).  So, what is it that gives them that undeniable chicken flavor.  Wheat? Barley? Or, the likely culprit, MSG?  The chicken flavor was so forward that we were surprised not to see instructions on the bag indicating ‘refrigeration required after opening’.

Despite the too much chicken-ness exuding from these crisps, that really wasn’t what we didn’t like about them.  We have loved plenty of chicken flavored chips.  What we really didn’t like about these crisps were their lack of depth, and complexity.  We would sum up these crisps as sweet, with a bit of soy, garlic, onion and just the faintest brush of chili heat on the tail end.  They reminded us nothing of the amazing Thai chicken dishes that we’ve tasted over the years (we’re talking about you Pok Pok!).  And, they most certainly come no where near the best Thai flavored chips that we’ve ever tasted, and as long as Kettle Brand continues to keep those chips on our grocery shelves, we won’t be needing any other Thai chips!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

  1. I have to disagree with your opinion on this crisp. I have been steadily buying a small pack weekly, for the reason that it is a different “Chicken-flavoured” Crisp.

The usual ones from Walkers, and the Supermarket House-brands are “Roast Chicken”, and taste downright flat. I think the only way to tell that these from McCoy’s are superior, is to have had those.

These Sweet Thai ones have a hit of chilli and (basil / oregano) attached, which i find utterly refreshing, and savoury!

Ah well. I suppose we’re all entitled to our opinions!

    • Thanks for you comments Jeremy, we appreciate and value everyone’s personal opinions regarding crisps. We think you nailed it on the head when you said, “I suppose we’re all entitled to our opinions!”. That’s the great thing about reviewing chips – it is all subjective for the most part, and to each their own. There are plenty of chips that we have found delicious that many, or the majority of, people dislike. We just try to stay as consistent as possible.

Have you tasted many Thai flavored chips, or whoops, crisps?
