479 Degrees Popcorn - Black Truffle & White Cheddar

Finally!!  It is about time that someone hopped on the truffle-flavor snack train, and produced a “mainstream” snack that we could readily enjoy at our truffle pleasure…  479 Degrees Popcorn – thank you!

Some of you may be thinking of the chocolate varietal of truffles, but be certain that the truffle in this case is nothing of the sort.  Truffle, black (Perigold) truffle in this case, is of the fungal family, and considered one of the rare, and expensive, true delicacies in the world.  The truffle flavor is completely undeniable, and unmistakeable.  For anyone out there who has not yet tried this magical flavor, you are most definitely in for a treat with this popcorn.

Upon opening this bag, the black truffle aroma is undeniable, upfront, and powerful.  The unmistakeable scent of black truffle…whoa!!!  We are certain, without a doubt, that we have never smelled, or tasted, any commercial snack quite like this, (we must say commercial, because believe it or not, plenty of restaurants have been offering delicious flavored truffle snacks for years now – we are talking about you: Red Stag Supperclub, Bangers & Lace, Duck Fat, & Bulldog Northeast…to name a few).

You would think that by the sound of this review we were talking about some 5-chip rated popcorn right now, unfortunately the truffle flavor alone was not enough to rate this popcorn as “A-list” perfect.  There is plenty of mild, creamy white cheddar seasoning to go along with the black truffle oil flavor, and the combination works well.  Sadly, the photo on the front of the bag is a bit deceiving, and the popcorn kernels did not actually have any black (truffle) specs coating them at all.  Inspecting the kernels very closely showed that they were completely white in color – indicating the usage of truffle oil (only), and none of the mentioned truffle salt (which usually includes black specs; of course, our opinion only).

Overall, the popcorn is lightly coated with some great seasoning, but the popcorn kernels are definitely not as light, fluffy and crunchy as some of the other great popcorns we have tasted this year.  We appreciate that 479 Degrees Popcorn has tried to push the flavor boundaries, but this is one of those cases where execution doesn’t quite meet expectations.

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.
