Laurel Hill - Chile & Lime

According to Laurel Hill’s declaration on the colorful bag above, these Chile & Lime Tortilla Chips are “a perfectly balanced, zesty combination of sweet red chile & tangy lime, with a touch of sea salt.”  And, for the most part, they are right on regarding the flavor combination.

The chile and lime flavor combo has in the relatively recent past become a staple flavor among the chip industry, and if we didn’t know any better we’d say that Laurel Hill has decided to use one of the oldest snack food tricks in the world, and simply take two of their already proven, preexisting chips/flavors, and combine them to form a wholly new chip to their snack family repertoire!  In this case, the combo was created using Laurel Hill’s mild Sea Salt & Lime tortilla chips, and stealing the delicious trifecta of flavors – sweet (lots of sweet cane sugar, lots), garlic (adding delicious depth in the background), and red chile (a heat that builds on the back end) – that encompass their Sweet Chili kettle cooked potato chips!

First, and foremost, what we noticed more than anything about these chips were their astounding level of sweetness, practically verging on toothaches for all!!  Next, would be the tortilla chip’s unique shape itself.  Huge, dollar bill shaped corn tortilla chips filled the bag to the brim.  The chips were medium thickness, with a hefty crunch and chew to them.  As we’ve told you in the past, we don’t feel that the sweet chile flavor works best with a tortilla chip; for one reason or another the combo just seems to jive better with the earth and salty flavors of a potato chip.  That being said, these sweet chile flavored chips, with the acidic addition of cirtus-y lime, are about as good as the flavor combo is going to get.

In the end, these Laurel Hill chips actually triggered thoughts of tasty, sweet and sour, Thai food!  Which is always tasty in our books!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
