Barcel Churritos - Fuego

Comments:

Little churros?  The only resemblance these crunchy snack sticks have with churros would be their shape, and the possibility that they were fried.  Other than that, nothing!

Barcel’s Churritos are weird, little, skinny sticks!  And in our opinion, they kind of resemble a cross between a wigglier pretzel stick, and crunchy chow mein noodles!  Their texture is crispy and light, and they slightly remind us of the recently reviewed Snyders of Hanover’s Korn Krunchers, in that they are bready, but apparently made with corn?!  Still, that being said, we could not really distinguish any of the actual corn flavor that we appreciated so much in Snyder’s Korn Krunchers.  The crunchy Churritos are very easy to devour by the handful.  However, despite their hefty fat content, they do not encompass very much depth, richness or character.

According to the packaging, the ‘fuego’ seasoning is supposedly hot chili pepper; but we all know that when Barcel tells us chili, they usually actually mean the ubiquitous chili and lime combo.  Despite our mixed feelings towards the chili & lime flavor combination, it appears that the popular flavor is here to stay, and we are just going to have to take the good with the bad.  To us, the chili and lime duo is one that we seem to either love or hate; and in this case we don’t love it!  The hot chili flavor is not really spicy so much as it is too harsh, and manufactured; while the lime flavor is practically unbearable and unnaturally acidic.

Overall, we were not huge fans.  While we can appreciate the Churritos unique shape, and texture, we can’t seem to justify it against their flavor.  We just don’t seem to have a very good relationship with many of Barcel’s snacks.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
