Michael Season's Unsalted Boldness - Balsamic Vinegar & Black Pepper


We are starting to get very concerned here at Chip Review that if this year keeps up with the really, super, fantastic pace of delivering so many lip-smacking new chips, we are simply going to run out of ©©©© ratings to give them!!!

Well, we should probably address the elephant in the room (aka, description on the chip bag).  UNSALTED!?!?!  Huh?  What?!  Michael Season’s you had us at unsalted!  Not, ‘had us’ the way that Rene had Tom in that Maguire film.  No, you ‘had us’ wondering what the heck you were thinking!  And, you ‘had us’ wondering if we should even give these a taste?!  In our neck of the woods, and in our line of work (snacking), unsalted could be referred to as fighting words!!

Surprisingly enough, these potato chips aren’t our first encounter with Michael Season’s unsalted potato chips. Apparently, low sodium seems to be a theme with many of Michael Season’s tasty snacks.  Well, we’ll be the first to admit when we are wrong, and in this case, we were definitely jumping to unsalted conclusions before really giving them a shot.  We are more than happy to report that these potato chips are certainly bold, and definitely flavorful!!

The Balsamic Vinegar & Cracked Pepper seasoning blend really shines, and compliments the natural potato flavor almost perfectly.  Even before making contact with our tongue, the presence of finely ground black pepper tickles our senses.  Once the chip does connect with our tongue, a subtle sweetness hits right before a restrained, but ample zing of balsamic vinegar surrounds the taste buds, and nasal cavity.  Finally, at the finish, the cracked pepper appears once again and adds a tiny bit of heat to the back of our throat, and rounds everything out perfectly.

So, are we missing the salt?  Only very slightly.  We like salt on our chips.  In fact, if we hadn’t been made aware of it prior to eating them, we very likely may not have been able to tell that they were missing salt.  But, the fact of the matter is that these chips are called ‘Unsalted Boldness’, and Michael Season’s wanted us to recognize that they didn’t use salt, and be impressed by it.  Well, consider us impressed!

More than the salt, what we did find a little lacking was the fatty richness of the chips.  Thinner, crispy, large, unbroken potato chips, with loads of potato flavor, complimented by the delicious seasoning.  Great chips, but our mouths could tell that the chips did not encompass the rich, greasy, potato chip fat content that we love.  We appreciate the health aspect of sporting 30% less fat than the leading potato chip brand, but put some of that fat back into these and the chips may just have been “A” list worthy!!  In the end, for chips with no salt, we are perfectly fine with settling on lip-smacking!

  1. I have been having trouble finding Michael Season’s chips where I shop. They have carried them for a very long time. The store told me that the company was bought by another company and they are no longer making the chips. Does anyone have any information on this? Their website is no longer active.
