REVIEW: Diego’s Hot & Spicy – Red Chile Potato Chips

Diego's Chips - Red ChileOh Diego!  Just last year you wowed us with your Hot & Spicy Habanero Potato Chips (one of the 25 best chips we tried in 2014!), and this year it looks like you plan to do the same with your Hot & Spicy Red Chile Potato Chips!!

Red chile?  What exactly are these red chiles? Are there actually chiles that are only named red chiles?  We know of a lot of different red chiles, so without specifying what red chiles are being used are we supposed to guess, or assume that it’s a combination!?  Or, are we completely off base, and these Red (hot) Chile (pepper) chips actually taste like our favorite 90’s American rock band, with a sprinkle of Kiedis and a splash of Flea!?!  Let’s hope not!

Fortunately, our wishes were granted, and these chips exude a lot more RICO SUAVE flavors, than sweaty rock music notes!  In fact, these chips are some of the most uniquely flavored that we have tried in a while.  More than rico suave, we would describe these chips as rico SAVORY!  A simple, yet unique combination of smoky chiles, garlic and salt mingle with the potato chips in a way that never oversteps its boundaries. The chile flavor reminds us of chipotle, except with a more savory and spicy essence, and none of those fruity or vegetal notes.  We really appreciate how Diego did not feel the need to include any arbitrary layer of sweetness to help smooth or round out the red chile seasoning.  Like we always (or at least should, if we don’t) – if you are going to go savory, you go all in! Muy rico salado!!

Diego’s potato chips are on the larger, mostly full, semi-thin end of the chip spectrum.  Nice and light, with a crispy crunch to them.  The chips had a few rustic potato skin edges, and a really decent amount of potato flavor, seamlessly complimented by the salty-smoky seasoning blend.  We would say that the chips are potato forward, with a nice kiss of oil, perfectly complimented by the red chile seasoning combo.

Whether or not these Red Chile chips are better than Diego’s Habanero flavor, is a toss up in our books.  Luckily for you, and more luckily for us, we still have Diego’s Fuego in our back pocket to help us break the tasty Diego hot & spicy potato chip showdown!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
