In case there is anyone out there who just does not know: Fuego means FIRE! in the Spanish language. And, for those of you who actually know a little more Spanish, these chips are delicioso y muy rico!!
Over the past year, or two, we have reviewed both of Diego’s other ‘Hot & Spicy’ flavors – Habanero and Red Chile – and we can happily report that their most recent flavor is another lip-smacking addition that line-up. In our “professional” opinion, it sort of seems like these Fuego flavored chips could just be a cross between, or combination of, those two other original flavors; with some very minor tweaks here and there.
The chips start out with some tangy-sweet tomato notes, followed closely by a hefty layer of smoke a la BBQ seasoning, and then finish the flavor ride with a strong chili pepper presence. The seasoning is tasty, really tasty, but are they worthy of their ‘fuego’ namesake? At first, we were going to answer that question with a definitive NO, but….wait…hold on now…..holy moly, we would have been so wrong! YES, an astounding yes, they are in fact spicy!! Their heat may not attack the mouth and throat upon initial contact like many other spicy chips do, but wait just a little bit, plus a little bit more, and then slowly, but powerfully, the burn appears, and remains! Not quite sure if Diego decided to use a lot more habanero on these chips, or if he is using another more potent chili like the ghost pepper. Since this bag was sent to us prior to the Fuego flavor going to market, there were no ingredients listed, and we can only hypothesize.
As for Diego’s potato chips themselves, well, they are fine potato chips, with plenty of real potato flavor. On the large, mostly full, semi-thin end of the chip spectrum. Light and crispy.
Well, it looks like it is a toss up as to which of Diego’s three spicy flavors is the best because we thought all three of them were lip-smacking!
As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.
