Old Dutch Appetizers on the Go Ripples – Jalapeño Cream Cheese Poppers Potato Chips

Old Dutch Ripples - Jalapeno Popper

Original Review Here

Old Dutch there is no shame in admitting that it has been quite a while since we here at Chip Review have been impressed by one of your new chips…  That being said, you really knocked our socks off with these delicious tangy, and extra spicy, chips!

BIJOU-REVIEW: Old Dutch Ripples Appetizers On The Go – Chicken Artichoke Flatbread

Old Dutch Ripples Appetizers - Chicken Artichoke FlatbreadWe may have called Old Dutch’s Appetizers On The Go our favorite sort of Appetizers On The Go ( AKA CHIPS, they are so deliciously versatile!), the last time we reviewed them, but that statement does not hold true with this most recent flavor!!

Old Dutch’s Chicken Artichoke Flatbread is salty, salty, – capital S-A-L-T-Y!!  And not in the good, we really love salt, sort of way.

The potato chips have a very distinct spices/herbs aroma – we recognize basil right off the bat.

But, as for the taste – uhhhh…. we do not taste any chicken, artichoke or flatbread (not that we were expecting to actually taste the flatbread).

What we do taste are all of the ingredients that are listed on the back of the bag – tomato powder, onion, garlic and basil.  In other words these chips taste sort of like generic pizza seasoning.

The chips aren’t necessarily bad by any means but they are just some of the least accurately flavor named that we can remember.  Why Old Dutch even decided to call them chicken artichoke is beyond us?!?

BIJOU-REVIEW: Old Dutch Ripples Appetizers On The Go – Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Old Dutch Appetizers - Bacon CheeseburgerThese are our favorite kind of Appetizers On The Go – CHIPS!!

At first we sort of scoffed at the flavor name of these chips – Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders?!  Really, is the sliders aspect of that name necessary?  In essence the chip flavor would be the same regardless of what size the burger you are comparing it it is – so by simply calling these Bacon Cheeseburger flavored would have sufficed!   But then we realized that this line of Old Dutch Ripples were supposed to represent “Appetizers On The Go,” and in that case including Sliders as a part of the flavor name made a lot more sense.

The bacon flavor aspect really just consisted of a splash of some smoke, otherwise we did not get any rich porky fat flavor.

And as for the burger portion, no beef to be found here either!  Basically just salt combined with whey seems to be the representative combination for meat these days.

And although both mustard and tomato appear to be non-existent among the ingredients list, their presence or flavor is surely recognizable and quite prominent. One taster went so far as to call the chips ketchup and mustard chips (which isn’t a bad idea for a new flavor!!).

These are not bad chips in any way, in fact they are pretty easy to chomp on, but they were definitely lacking in any real definitive embracing or representation of the bacon cheeseburger slider….

REVIEW: Old Dutch Ripples – Appetizers On The Go – Buffalo Wing and Blue Cheese Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Old Dutch Ripples - Appetizers on the Go - BuffaloDoes it get any better than when you travel home to Minnesota for a long weekend, and you discover that your favorite chip brand (which is not currently available for retail sale in the region of the country you live now), has released an all-new line of chips?!?  NO, no it does not!!

Old Dutch’s Ripples Appetizers On the Go, are basically a new line of flavors based on those stereotypical appetizers found at any and every bar.  The other flavors include: sweet potato fries, sliders, and onion blossom; but we decided to start with what can arguably be called the most iconic, or classic, bar appetizer of all-time!  That’s right wings!!

Now, just to be on the safe side, although we can probably assume that you are all aware of what buffalo wings are, in the event that there are one or two of you out there who are not, there are two things to note here: 1) these are not wings from a buffalo, they are chicken wings, and 2) they are called buffalo wings because they got their name from Buffalo, NY (the home of the original “buffalo-style” hot wings).  Now that we have those logistics out of the way, onto more important things like – CHIPS!

First, to say that these chips are loaded with seasoning, would be an understatement.  It’s like a flavor storm came rushing through!  It took a little while, but by about the fifth handful of chips we realized that the seasoning level was most likely so heavy because it was trying to overcompensate for the lack of kick that these chips had.  That’s not to say that they weren’t accurately buffalo wing and blue cheese flavored, it’s just that they had a very mild buffalo flavor.  In fact, we would probably more accurately call these chips blue cheese w/ a splash of buffalo sauce flavor.  The blue cheese is definitely the prominent flavor aspect, and we were just left wanting more tangy vinegar bite, and spicy chili heat.

May we just say that we love Old Dutch’s narrow rippled, Ripples potato chips.  They are a tasty combination of very narrow ripples, great potato flavor, a decent level of grease, and a sturdy crunch.  In fact, the line used to include one of our favorite chips of all-time were Old Dutch’s Hot Potato Ripple Potato Chips; unfortunately, they are no more!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
