BIJOU-REVIEW: Deep River Snacks Honchos – Ranch Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©-1/4 chips  (tolerable)

deep-river-honchos-ranchWe have been huge fans of Deep River Snacks for quite some time.  We respect the company’s decision to provide us with a more nutritious snack option, and we quite simply love a lot of their chips.

Unfortunately, these Ranch flavored Honchos are not among that long list of the Deep River chips that we do love.

We were going to simply chock these chips up to being tortilla chips, and that Deep River Snacks perhaps had not yet perfected their new Honchos line, but then we remembered that a couple of years ago we reviewed, and loved, their lip-smacking Peach Habanero Tortilla Chips.  Today these chips are apart of the Honchos line, but back when we reviewed them they were just tortilla chips with In Your Face Flavor!

But, enough about those great chips, today we are dealing with these only tolerable chips.

At first we thought that we were going to really like these chips.  All the usual ranch flavor notes were present and accounted for, but then somewhere in the background was a weird, sorta tangy and very salty intruder…..

And there it was, smack-dab in the middle of the ingredients list – cheddar cheese?!?  Huh?  Sorry, cheddar cheese is not meant to be used in ranch dressing.

Unfortunately, that is not our only issue with these chips.  We are also not very huge fans of the tortilla chips themselves.  Maybe we let the chips slip too close to their expiration date, or maybe they had already taken a wrong turn down the too hard and crunchy chip highway.

No light and crispy chips here.  Simply too dense, too hard and rigid tortilla chips for lthe likes of our palettes.

Sorry Deep River but these are not among our favorites from you.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks Limited Edition – Ninja Ginger Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Ninja GingerFinally, the infamous Limited Edition NINJA GINGER is here!!!

Not to be confused with the Ginger Ninja Trickster, (although we’re betting that these are in fact, his most favorite chips of all-time!).  No, we are talking about Deep River Snack’s Limited Edition Ninja Ginger Kettle Cooked Potato Chips with a KICK!

We learned of these uniquely flavored limited edition potato chips approximately half a year ago via a MICRO-REVIEW posted by Junk Food Guy.  Before even reading a single word from JFG’s glowing review, we knew that these were something that we could, and hopefully eventually would, LOVE!  Time passed, and yet we still could not find this flavor included anywhere Deep River Snacks were sold….
Luckily for us, and for you, if in fact you are reading this, some generous person over at Deep River Snacks recently heard our pleas (okay our whining….begging….call it what you will), and sent a few samples of that sweet golden-yellow beauty above recently to our headquarters.

We have delayed the actual review long enough, lets get into it.  First of all, despite our own personal feelings towards these Ninja Gingers, we do see how they may not be for everyone.  They are flavorful, they are assertive, and they do deliver a ginger-FULL “kick”!  So, like we said, they may not be for everyone, but they are MOST CERTAINLY FOR US!!

It is always a relief, or let’s call it a pleasant surprise, when we crunch upon a new chip that causes our taste bud engines to start firing at full throttle, and question what we are fueling them with!!  Perplexed?  Yes.  Excited?  Certainly.  Impressed?  Without a doubt!!  These Ninja Ginger chips are delicious!  First and foremost, let’s get that straight, these chips are capital D-lishish!  But, you know what, they also really, really remind us of two other chips.

First, would be Kettle Brand’s Spicy Thai (which just so happens to be one of our favorite chips of all-time).  Both Deep River’s and Kettle Brand’s chips utilize the typical utility ingredients of onion and garlic, and both also reference cilantro – we’re guessing more so for color than actual flavor.  Both brands also list the addition of a chili pepper, but while Kettle Brand calls out the jalapeño, Deep River remains illusive with the always generic “chili pepper”.  All that being said, the real, major, synonymous ingredient that both delicious chips share is…. bet you can’t guess it …..yep, that’s right – GINGER!  We cracked the tasty code.

The other chips that we feel like these Ninja Ginger chips remind us of, also happen to be from Deep River Snacks, however they have long been discontinued. Deep River Snack’s Asian Sweet Spicy kettle chips, were some delicious sweet and spicy kettle chips, but that is really all we remember of them.

In the end, all we really want to say is that we love’em.  Medium thick, slightly greasy, perfectly crunchy, kettle cooked potato chips coated with a complex, ginger heavy, sweet, salty and slightly spicy seasoning.  Delicious!!  Easily some of the best chips we have tried this year, and another lip-smacking hit from Deep River Snacks!  If you can find them, you should do yourself a treat and buy them.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks – Krinkle Cut Salt & Cracked Pepper Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Krinkle Cut Salt & Cracked Pepper Potato ChipsWe are not the biggest fans of the krinkle cut kettle cooked style of potato chip.  Maybe not quite as crunchy as the kettle cooked waffle cut variety (seriously teeth shattering!), but still a little too solid for our mouths!

Despite their texture, we really dug the seasoning covering these chips.  Impressively simple, and concise! Salt, oil, potato (in chip form of course), and PEPPER!!  Lots and lots of coarsely ground, cracked black pepper!  And no skimping on the salt.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks – Peach Habanero Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-3/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Peach Habanero Tortilla ChipsDeep River Snacks Peach Habanero Tortilla Chips –

In Your Face Flavor!?  Yep!

In Our Mouth Flavor!!  Triple-double yes!

We must admit, these chips really snuck up on us.  We were simply minding our own business, methodically scanning the snack shelves of our local grocery store and all of a sudden – wham! A sharp, eye catching, rich black and electric green bag with the words Deep River Snacks, and more importantly, Peach Habanero!  Where the heck did these come from?!  Why have we not heard of these before right now?!?  What are we doing asking all of these questions instead of digging into these exciting new chips!?!

Initial reaction: sweet, salty, sour, tangy and very spicy!  Pretty much nailed every single taste bud we’ve got!  These chips have got it all.  A real funky whirlwind of flavors, and yet able to come together very cohesively.  The peach habanero seasoning really, really reminds us of Hawaiian’s Mango Habanero kettle chips; in that at first we thought the chips were on the verge of being too cloyingly sweet, but then our taste buds settled in and accepted the sweet peach flavor.  Some people may be turned off by just how intensely sweet these chips are at first, but if they hang in there for just a couple chips more they should soon experience the harmonious deliciousness that these chips deliver!

Once the sweet peach nectar powder subdues, the tangy vinegar notes, and fruity, floral notes of the habanero appear.  Each complimenting the sweet stone fruit, while also helping to subdue and cut through some of the sweetness.  The seasoning works very well with the corn tortilla chips.  On the tail end is where the heat finally comes in.  And we are talking about some real heat here.  Maybe not quite the heat of some other habanero flavored chips but still anytime you have real habanero powder listed in among your ingredients, you know they are going to be spicy!!  The best part of it was, unlike with most snacks claiming to be habanero flavored, we could actually taste the habanero chile, even through all that heat.

The tortilla chips themselves are pretty good.  Light and crunchy, with a rustic corn flavor.  They sort of remind us of Doritos, except a bit heavier.  Very easy to crunch through a whole bunch of them a short amount of time!

Overall, these are fabulous, fun, unique and tasty! We feel like it is our chip duty to also mention that these chips are much, much better than Lay’s current delve into the fruit flavored chip realm with their Mango Salsa potato chips (much, much better).  It’s funny, many of these unique flavored chips don’t seem like they should work, and many don’t end up working, but some brands seem to have that secret recipe and we are all better for it!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
