Chip Review’s 25 Chips to Christmas

Well Chip Review readers, that wraps things up for another great year of chip reviewing!

We would like to say that it has been a true pleasure sharing our thoughts with all of you as we chomped our way through hundreds of bags, and countless calories this past year :)  Thanks to all of you who follow us each and every day.  We appreciate it, and we wouldn’t be here without each and everyone of you!!  Also, a very special thanks to those snack companies who graciously provided their products for us to review.  It’s a tough job (especially for our waistlines), but someone has got to do it.

Below is our list of the Top 25 Chips we reviewed this year.  Agree or disagree, we’d love to hear it!!

Gibble’s – Red Hot Home Style Potato Chips

Gibble's - Red Hot Potato Chips

Original Review Here

We discovered Gibble’s RED HOT Potato Chips only two weeks into the 2013 chip season, and yet we are still feeling their tasty heat!  Direct, simple and to the point.  Gibble’s chips are heavily coated with a bright red dusting, and they are most definitely red hot.  They’ve got some sweet, some heat, and even a little porky meat!!

Gibble's - Krinkle Kut Home Style Potato Chips

Comments:

A little while ago we reviewed Gibble’s Original Home Style Potato Chips, and we liked them quite a bit.  Just in case you happen to miss that review we think it’s important to get something out of the way early on this review.  Gibble’s Potato Chips have a very, very, very unique flavor, and that unique flavor comes from the decision to fry their chips in LARD, rather than the more popular vegetable oil.

Just in case, for those of you who don’t know: Lard = (plain and simple) = PIG FAT!

Gibble’s Krinkle Kut Potato Chips are definitely not lacking in the salt department, and we like it.  They have an oily, crispy, crumbly-crunchy texture, with a nice mouthfeel.  We would describe the chips as medium-small, with wider cut crinkles.

We’re fairly confident in saying that Gibble’s potato chips are the first, and only, chips we’ve tasted that have been cooked using strictly lard; and we must say again, that the lard flavor is a tiny bit off-putting at first to our lard immaturity, but after a handful, or two, they started to really tasted good and salty.

Lard for frying!!……that alone should be cause enough to go out and buy yourself a bag of these chips…..and then report back to us with your thoughts!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

Gibble’s – Old Fashion Thin Pretzels

Gibble's - Old Fashion Thin Pretzels

Comments:

How much can we possibly have to say about plain old fashion pretzels??  You’re right, we don’t have much (original, or new), to say about them.  So, we’ll just keep this review short and to the point.

Gibble’s Old Fashion Thin Pretzels are likely the best, plain pretzels that we can ever remember tasting.  Somehow, Gibble’s has given their pretzels a depth and richness that other plain pretzels do not exhibit.  Maybe it is the inclusion of the butter among the ingredients, we’re not sure.  These pretzels also have a slightly different texture than any others we have tasted.  They are a touch less crisp and dry, and a bit more toothsome and rich – if that makes any sense at all?

Either way, we like them, and thank Gibbles for giving us something different than the majority in the industry!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Gibble's - Red Hot Potato Chips

Comments:

There’s definitely no shortage of seasoning or heat with these potato chips….and we love it!!!

Gibble’s Red Hot Home Style Potato Chips are some of the best chips we’ve encountered so far this year (granted we are only two weeks into 2013, but still…).  To try and pinpoint all of the flavors going on with these chips would be difficult.  It’s fair to assume that a wide array of spices were combined to season them.  In fact, probably the best way we can think of to describe their flavor to you would be to compare them to a spicy bbq chip, only with more depth and complexity.  In fact, the further we moved down the bag, the sweeter the chips became, and yet their ‘red hot’ heat never wavered.

At first, we thought these chips didn’t inhibit the same luscious, pork essence that we had loved about Gibble’s Original Potato Chips.  For those of you who may be a little hesitant to enjoy lard fried potato chips, for fear of tasting pork fat on your potato chips, rest assured, the ‘red hot’ seasoning is strong enough that you may not even notice the porky goodness.  However, for those of you that like some oink with your potato, we doubt you will have any qualms with the detectable level.  In fact, we felt that the piggy flavor continued to grow with the more chips we enjoyed, and at one point, a taster even mentioned pork rinds…need we say more?

Lastly, can we just mention that we love the flavor name – RED HOT.  Direct, simple and to the point.  Gibble’s chips are definitely covered with a bright red dusting, and they are friggin’ hot.  They’ve got some sweet, some heat, and even a little porky meat!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Chip Review of the day…..

Gibble’s – White Cheddar Cheese Puffys

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Comments:

Gibble’s Baked White Cheddar Cheese Puffys are a bit different than your everyday cheese curls.  Their consistency is a lot more dense than what we are typically used to.  Gibble’s Puffys still exhibit the traditional cheese curl melt-a-bility once they reach the tongue, despite their hefty appearance persuading us otherwise.  The white cheddar cheese seasoning was a milder, creamy, more natural break from the usual electric orange, sharp and pungent “traditional” cheddar cheese.

All in all, these cheese curls did work on many levels, and definitely satisfied our cheese cravings.  But, in the end, we were hoping for just a bit more flavor, and a lighter crunch.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know make sure to let us know.
