Will the real Slim Shady Hot Sauce Corn chips please stand up?
We repeat, will the real Slim Shady Hot Sauce Corn Chips please stand up?
We’re gonna have a problem here!!

What happens when a local Detroit chip company and a local Detroit guy – gone worldwide rap superstar come together to create some spicy hot sauce corn chips?  Well, in our opinion, good things!

We were very surprised as we looked back through our reviews for spicy corn chips to discover that we have only tried two others along our chip reviewing journeys.  And it is fair to say that Nick’s Hot Sauce Corn Chips are most definitely better than these or these – meaning that they are the BEST of the small spicy corn chip group that we have tried so far.

These corn chips may not be for everyone, especially anyone out there who can’t stand the heat, or is opposed to loads of seasoning or flavor!  The dark red seasoning liberally coats each chip, delivering a pretty harsh, and spicy seasoning blend.  Powerful notes of zingy vinegar tangy-ness swirl in the background.  A little garlic, little onion, and even a touch of sweetness round everything out.  It is fair to say that there is not very much natural about this seasoning!  Did we mention that these are spicy?  Because they really, really, really are spicy! They build up to quite a tremendous heat that resonates in the mouth for some time!

The corn chips themselves have a firm and strong crunch, with a little dense chew.  Despite all of the powerful seasoning coating the chips, we could still taste some of corn chip flavor.  Other than that pretty standard shape and size.

While Nick’s Hot Sauce Corn Chips may be lacking some of the depth of flavor that Nick’s Hot Sauce Cheese Curls had (likely due to the lack of any cheese component), they are still a most welcome addition to the spicy corn chip family!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Nick’s – Flamin’ Hot Sauce Crunchy Cheese Curls

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Nick's - Flamin' Hot Sauce Crunchy Cheese CurlsWe must believe that by this day and age nearly everyone, in all corners of the world, either knows of, or has personally enjoyed a bag, or two, or in our case – five thousand of the iconic Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.  Oh Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, you are so perfectly tasty!  You are so delicious and popular in fact that years ago “several schools in California, New Mexico and Illinois…banned the high-fat, high-salt and possibly addictive treat.” www.huffingtonpost.com

But Chip Review, today’s review is for Nick’s Flamin’ Hot Sauce Crunchy Cheese Curls, not Cheetos?!

Why yes, you are most certainly right, dear observant reader.  We only first mentioned the delicious power of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to help us segway into our review of Nick’s Curls, and to really drive home our feeling that one must live in a pretty amazing world when so many similar products can both coexist and thrive, and at the same time taste so differently.  With that being said, we have tried quite a few different spicy cheese curls over the years, and for the most part they are all pretty delicious, with of course the occasional dud thrown into the mix.

Luckily for us, and for you, if you happen to be in the surrounding Detroit area (as Nick’s is a local D Town chip company), then you will be happy to know that if you do spot Nick’s bright orange and yellow bag, with the Dave Navarro looking devil guy in the corner, go ahead and fork over the cash, because some tasty cheese curls are about to be yours!

Nick’s Flamin’ Hot Sauce Crunchy Cheese Curls are a more than welcome addition to the hot cheese curl family!  Nick’s curls encompass the standard Flamin’ Hot blinding red color, which makes us ponder if Red 40 Lake (coloring) is actually the secret to making tasty hot curls because they all seem to use it?!  It is certainly no mystery where the 10 bright red fingertips that are consequently staining the keys on our keyboard comes from!  Pretty average curl shape and size, with sort of a firmer, or heartier, crunch than other curls.  Flavor-wise these are fantastic.  They are certainly not the spiciest of curls, but do exude the usual combination of unnaturally sort of spicy acidic tongue shock mixed with just a tiny splash of cheddar cheese seasoning.  An usually heavy usage of garlic, and a touch of onion, adds a delicious background layer of flavor that really compliments the heat and cheese.  Plain and simple, we could crunch these all day long!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Nick’s – Party Mix

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Nick's - Party MixA little while back we were pleasantly surprised when we crossed paths with a local Detroit chip brand called Nick’s during our travels to the Motor City.  Luckily for us, our review of Nick’s lip-smacking Hot Habanero Tortilla Chips was spotted by someone at Nick’s Chips, and they were kind enough to send us some more of their salty snacks for us to taste and review!  First up, is Nick’s Party Mix!!

Over the past three years we have often written about the joys of growing up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes many times.  And, one of those greatest joys would be the abundance of Old Dutch chips available anywhere and everywhere.  While Old Dutch may be a bit bigger company than Nick’s, we imagine that there are kids growing up in the Detroit area, just like us, that will one day they too will reflect back on the joys of growing up with their favorite local chips!

So, why the connection between these two different regional chip companies?  Well, plain and simple, as soon as we tore into Nick’s Party Mix bag memories came flooding in from the good old days when we used to enjoy Old Dutch’s very, very similar Party Mix.  Seriously, the mixes may in fact be identical, but since Old Dutch discontinued their version years ago we can’t compare them to be certain.  But, we can remember enjoying the mix, and we quite enjoyed Nick’s mix as well!

To be honest, the mix is fairly unoriginal and simple, but that is a lot of what we like like about it.  The combination of corn chips, twisted pretzels, cheese dusted tortilla chips, and crunchy cheese curls forms a tasty and well balanced mix, but certainly nothing new or revolutionary.  There are ingredients we would add to this mix that could improve it in our opinion, but than it would no longer be the classic PARTY MIX that we new and loved growing up.  So, keep it the same, keep it straight forward, and keep it comin’!!  Because we would be be more than satisfied munching on a bowl of Nick’s Party Mix any day!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Nick’s – Hot Habanero Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Nick's - Hot Habanero Tortilla ChipsWe are always pleasantly surprised when we cross paths with a local or regional chip brand while we are traveling.  Especially one that is as lip-smacking as these Hot Habanero!!  We spotted Nick’s tortilla chips while visiting the Detroit area, and after a little bit of research, it appears as though Nick’s chips are actually based in the Detroit area, and we’re guessing that their distribution is predominantly limited to that area as well.

WHOA – flavorful!!  First crunch, and we can tell instantly that Nick is our sort of chip guy!  No subtle dusting of a delicate seasoning blend in this case.  Rather, a potently spicy, full-flavored, no holds barred – CHIPS!!

In fact, surprisingly enough, Nick’s Hot Habanero Tortilla Chips are sort of reminiscent of Doritos long lost Fiery Habanero from years back! And, of course by surprisingly enough, we mean awesomely enough!!  Easily some of the best Doritos of all-time!!

Nick’s hot habanero seasoning blend has an initial zip to it.  Sort of a spicy, tangy, slightly acidic combo, finished with a nice splash of salty cheesy-ness to smooth things out!  That initial tangy burn doesn’t last very long, and while the cheese flavor does mellow it out to certain extent, the powerful, slow burn from the habanero heat creeps up, and plants a nice wallop on the backs of our tongues and throats!  No joke, this heat continually gains and retains!  Be warned, by the bottom of this bag our tongues were sweating and throbbing a bit!!

The tortilla chips are decent, but have that slightly more toothsome, or the best way we can describe it is sort of “stale” texture to them.  Who knows, maybe our bag was actually stale, maybe one day we will get the chance to compare.  Either way, we usually prefer more crispy, light and fragile tortilla chips, but with this powerful hot habanero seasoning blend, it’s probably best that the chips had some body to them.

Overall, just really tasty chips.  We can’t wait for our next excuse to visit the Detroit area and search out Nick’s chips once again!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
