We’re not sure how many of you out there also tried Paqui’s One Chip Challenge; but if you did, then you are well aware that the Carolina Reaper Madness flavored chip is far and away the spiciest chip that we have ever tasted.  It not only talked the talk, but it walked the walk, and even rocked our proverbial mouth sock (if that makes any sense?)!!  Expectations exceeded!

paqui-nacho-cheese-especialBy now we’re guessing – NO! We’re hoping!! – that most of you chip lovers out there are familiar with Paqui Tortilla Chips.  (If you are not, we are in fact slightly judging you and letting you know that you should be flying out the door right now to try them!)

Their most recent, insanely spicy, venture has been all over the Twitter-sphere!  You may have heard about it, the #OneChipChallenge?

Somehow, Paqui’s Nacho Cheese Especial chips snuck onto the chip market, and we didn’t even realize that we had never reviewed them.

And as usual, these Paqui chips are lip-smacking!

Take this next statement as you will, but these chips taste an awful lot like the classic Doritos Nacho Cheese chips, in the best ways possible.

Same deliciously cheesy seasoning, only with maybe a touch more zing. 

Extremely light, crispy, airy, and flaky corn tortilla chips.  But, to top it off, also with some real corn flavor depth.

We could go on, and on, referencing Paqui’s quippy packaging slogans, but all we really want to do is say:

Bravo Paqui.  Bravo.

We don’t normally show you more than a single picture from the front of the bag, but we’re feeling like this packaging warrants a couple more shots.

In all seriousness, Paqui’s new One Chip Challenge may just go down in history as the single greatest chip marketing promotion that we have ever encountered!  The videos posted all over the internet of people attempting the One Chip Challenge, combined with Paqui’s absolutely, freakishly, fantastic packaging, had us fearing these chips even prior to tasting them.

Quick backstory on Chip Review and Paqui. We reached out to Paqui Tortilla Chips over three years ago about reviewing their small-ish line of chips.  After a few weeks of back and forth, Doug finally got a sample box out to us.  If you have ever checked out our 25 Chips to Christmas then needless to say that we were WOWED by the amazing quality of Paqui’s Grilled Habanero flavored tortilla chips.  Not just for their spot on attention to flavor detail but also for their willingness to really push the heat level to somewhere we had never tasted before.

Later that year, around Halloween time, Paqui reached out to us about being the first to taste, and review, their Limited Edition Haunted Ghost Pepper flavored tortilla chips.  Once again, if you have ever checked out our 25 Chips to Christmas, then you know that we were wowed by these as well.  Once again, Paqui pushed the heat to a level we had never before tasted on chips.

Fast forward to today: Paqui Tortilla Chips – The One Chip Challenge – Carolina Reaper Madness.  Lets break these chips, hold on, sorry, this chip experience down for you.

Truth be told, we typically start out by licking a chip.  We like to get a taste of the seasoning on its own.  This time was no different.  Lick 1 – wow, really delicious.  And, yeah, that’s pretty spicy.  One more lick – yep, these are very delicious.  Another amazing seasoning blend by Paqui.  Fruity, smoky, floral chile notes…..

Hold on now, wait a second…..

Oh yeah, there it is…..

Oh……

OMG!!!!!!! HOLY HELL!! F&$^(#F!!!!

Yep, that’s right, Paqui brought the heat once again!  It takes a little while to really hit you, but then once it does, you can expect some compounding, persistent, PAIN!  The tongue was actually throbbing. Two glasses of milk, and about ten minutes later and the heat practically disappeared.  We survived.

We are calling these chip, “A” list – perfect, not because they are our most favorite chips, or even that we would want to taste another one, but because they live up to everything they promise, and everything we expect from Paqui.  Without a doubt, the spiciest chips of all-time!

Bravo Paqui.  Bravo.

REVIEW: Paqui Tortilla Chips – Limited Edition Haunted Ghost Pepper

Paqui - Haunted Ghost PepperEvery little detail of these chips scare us…and we haven’t even braved to open the bag yet!

First of all, the flavor name conjures thoughts of Halloween, which is both creative and of course perfect timing as the spooky holiday is right around the corner. Yet, the chips also play off the aptly translated Ghost Pepper (scientific name: Bhut Jolokia) with a cleverly ‘haunted’ pun.  The bold black and white bag is eery, and sort of conjures thoughts of a ghost, and most certainly would even more so if the colors were inverted, and white became the dominant color scheme for the bag.  Speaking of the bag, can we stop to mention how much we appreciate the bold simplicity to Paqui’s bag design.  Clever and witty, but still unassuming and straightforward – definitely contenders for best designed bag of the year!

Before getting to our review, we should mention that we did a little research around the web to find out what others were saying in regards to these limited edition, spicy, haunted tortilla chips.  And, while we may not have found too much conversation regarding them as of yet (they were just issued in limited release approximately a week ago), we did stumble upon Paqui’s own Facebook page where this photo did not help one bit to reassure our tormenting suspicions towards what lay ahead for us.  We also found two intimidating statements, both made by Paqui Tortilla Chips themselves, that got our hearts racing for sure.  The first is also from their Facebook page, simply saying “The hottest tortilla chip ever made is almost here.”  Pretty bold and straightforward statement to say the least. We can appreciate how Paqui is directly specifying tortilla chips in their case, because as some of you may, or may not know, Blair’s Death Rain also released their own Bhut Jolokia flavored potato chips some while ago (so without a chip to chip comparison, who knows….).  The other statement came from the back of Paqui’s haunted chip bag, indicating the following WARNING:

The contents of this bag are extremely frightening.  Paqui is not responsible for any injuries that may result from ingesting this delicious terror.  The use of gloves and safety goggles is encouraged.  Common side effects include addiction to burning pain, blurred vision, and unquenchable thirst.  Enjoy with caution and consider yourself warned.

We consider ourselves very warned, and want to take this opportunity to let each and everyone of you know that it has been a true honor and pleasure writing these reviews for you, and if after trying these chips you never hear from us again…..

Alright, enough lollygagging, it is time to do this!  Upon opening the tortilla chip bag and taking a quick whiff inside, we were expecting our noses to take the initial hit and feel the instant burn, but we were pleasantly relieved to find that all we really smelled were Paqui’s deliciously rustic, corn tortilla chips (for more description on those wonderful tortilla chips themselves, see our first review of Paqui’s Grilled Habanero Tortilla Chips, because this review is all about the GHOST PEPPER!).

And…..all we have to say about the flavor is WOW! What a delicious flavor seasoning blend!  Paqui’s ghost pepper seasoning truly seemed to mirror the flavors, or characteristics, of Paqui’s Grilled Habanero tortilla chips.  There were some sweet and sour tangy citrus fruit notes at first, with a balanced blend of supporting cast ingredients like garlic, onion, cayenne and chipotle.  In fact, the overall taste of the blend was actually more flavorful, and forceful, and definitely more upfront than the Grilled Habanero.  However, that is as far as the similarities between the two went!

Please forgive us at this point for the remainder of the review, as we are not very sure how much sense we are going to make anymore….

At first, we were extremely surprised by the deceiving lack of expected heat.  Pretty sure some of us were thinking “Haunted Ghost Pepper, we don’t sweat you!”  Thirty seconds have passed, and we have now each had between 2 and 3 chips, and our tunes are beginning to change – in other words, we are all begging for mercy!  Again, wow-yeow – deceiving lack of heat is right.  The ghost pepper mouth scorching heat had arrived, and continued, and continued, and continued to build until each and every one of us were wishing we had stopped with the first chip we had tried.  Our eyes began to water up blurring our vision as we looked towards each other remembering the good times, back when we were comparing these chips to Paqui’s delicious Habanero chips, all the while realizing that those time were now behind us, and from this moment on our mouths, and throats, were in a battle with the wrath that is named the Haunted Ghost Pepper!

Honestly, we cannot convey the heat level of these chips to you accurately.  Our chests felt like we had a bad case of heartburn, our lips felt like a layer of salt had sat on them all day, and our mouths felt like they were on fire!  Luckily, after a couple (probably 10) glasses of milk, a few (probably 10) cold pancakes from the fridge, and some time (approximately who knows how many minutes we may have blacked out), the heat finally began to subdue, and our bodies began to adjust to normalcy.  The funniest thing is that almost instantly after this experience, each Chip Reviewer began contemplating if we should eat some more of the painful delicious chips….?  Maybe this time just stop with one chip, that deliciously flavorful first one?  Maybe this time we would notice the smoky depth to the chips and it would impress us.  Maybe this time we would even notice more of the intricate flavor complexities and how well salted the chips were.  And then, maybe the heat wouldn’t hurt quite so bad…

What we can tell you for sure is that these chips are deliciously amazing, and one of a kind.  They are certainly the hottest chips we have ever tried!  In the end, truth be told, if you pace yourselves, and only eat one chip every five or ten minutes, they are actually tolerable, and really, really tasty!  The only reason these chips do not covet the “A” list endorsement would be due to their heat being so extreme we can’t enjoy very many chips at once!

Lastly, we would like to know what you think, we have been contemplating as to whether or not we should set out a bowl of these for trick or treaters who stop by the Chip Review headquarters??  Or, maybe that would just be too tricky!?!

Truth be told, here at Chip Review headquarters we keep a small glass jar of dehydrated, and pulverized, habanero chile peppers.  In other words, pure habanero powder, or dust.  Just a little dash can spice up the tamest of dishes, and a spoonful could make the most experienced chile head begin to sweat bullets, and reach for the milk jug.  So, in other words, here at Chip Review, we like the heat, and we certainly love (and respect) the habanero!!  So, let’s just say that when we saw these Grilled Habanero chips included among the four flavors from the wonderful people at Paqui Tortilla Chips, we were very pleased!

First and foremost, let’s talk about the tortilla chips themselves.  WOW – truly top notch execution!  Extremely light, crispy, and flaky corn tortilla chips, with a very strong corn masa flavor presence.  These are tortilla chips of the highest caliber!  Some chip reviewers actually prefer tortilla chips with a bit more hearty texture, and toothsome crunch, but the majority were definitely proclaiming Paqui tortilla chips just the way they are!  They really taste like fresh “restaurant” chips that have emerged warm and crispy (minus the warm of course) from the fryer.  You can take this as you wish, but we’d even call Paqui’s tortilla chips, very much akin to Doritos’ air pocket filled, light and flaky chip recipe.  And in our books, that’s quite the feat because we all know that Doritos has been making some great tortilla chips for a very long time!

The grilled habanero flavor, initially, did not seem as if it was going to bring the spicy heat, nor the flavor, levels that we were hoping, or expecting, it would.  However, as is so often with sneaky, delicious, complex chips, the flavor was actually there, and the heat was most definitely there, we just had to give our taste buds a second to adjust to Paqui’s staggering flavor compound!!  We actually should have used that second to prepare ourselves for what came next.

This seasoning combination is flavorful, in an understated, aromatic, sort of way. The chips encompass tangy, citrus notes in the background, and almost a creamy “cheese” powder essence in the forefront, (despite there being absolutely no inclusion of any such dairy product among the ingredients list).  The addition of cayenne is apparent, but it does not over power the habanero one bit.  Present, of course, were the seemingly always inclusive flavors of garlic and onion, there to help compliment and tame the powerful habanero chile heat.  To top it off, the chips were perfectly salted.

Speaking of the heat – HOLY COW!  We could use some milk right about now!  Paqui’s Grilled Habanero Tortilla Chips are some spicy chips.  The longer we sat there, after only a couple of chips (OK, you’re right, you caught us, a few handfuls), the hotter and hotter our mouths became!  Then our hairs began to tingle, our hearts began to race, and our brows began to sweat, and all we could think was “hold on, the milk is coming…”  Plain and simple, these are spicy chips, no doubt about it.

Apparently, Paqui [pah-kee] is the Aztec word meaning “happy”.  Well, lets just say that we are certainly happy to give Paqui’s Grilled Habanero tortilla chips a rating of four and three-quarter chips, both for being lip-smacking, but also for being lip-burning!!  Paqui’s Tortilla Chips are certainly among the elite that we have tasted this year, and have easily placed themselves in contention for Chip Review’s Top 25 Chips List at the end of the year!!
