REVIEW: Ruffles – All Dressed Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Ruffles - All DressedFINALLY!  We have found you!! We’ve been hearing rumors about this new Ruffles flavor for some time now, and just yesterday they finally appeared on our local grocery store shelves. The funny thing is that not only did they appear at the grocery store but then when we stopped by a random gas station and wouldn’t you know it, they had them now too. Made a quick stop at the local pharmacy, sure enough, tons of new bags of Ruffles All Dressed!  We started to wonder if we were seeing things?! Was this all a dream?!?  Had we just missed them up until now?  Were these chips not even really ‘all dressed’?  WERE WE EVEN DRESSED!?!?  No longer were we worried about acquiring these illusive new Ruffles, but rather finding our clothes and rectifying this common reoccurring nightmare!  Okay, deep breath, we’re fine, we’re ‘all dressed’ and so are the chips!

These are not the first All Dressed flavored potato chips that we have tried. Granted the other brands that we have tried have all been generic private labeled grocery line brands, so in essence that would make these the first ones that we have seen or tasted from any of the “big name” chip companies.

Are you familiar with the ‘All Dressed’ flavor?!  No?  Well, according to the back of the Ruffles bag:  In America it just means that you are wearing all of your clothes. But, in Canada ‘All Dressed’ actually means delicious ridgy chips that somehow taste salty, savory, & sweet all at the same time.

There you have it.  The flavor is Canadian, we get that much.  But, we don’t really appreciate Ruffles vague and frankly uninformative description of what Canada’s delicious ‘All Dressed’ flavor really is! First of all, pretty sure (maybe we are wrong) ‘All Dressed’ does not mean delicious ridgy chips, that would just be Ruffles trying to say that their chips represent all ‘All Dressed’ chips, when in fact the best ‘All Dressed’ chips that we have ever tried were not of the ripple/wavy/ruffle variety! Secondly, what sort of flavor description is salty, savory, & sweet all at the same time? Come’on Ruffles, that’s just lazy and ambiguous – we know plenty of flavors that fall within those descriptors!

Ruffles ‘All Dressed’ seasoning is quite a bit more savory than other ‘dressed’ chips that we have tried. Rather then embracing, and highlighting, the sour vinegar tang (which we tend to like), Ruffles has opted for a more subtle flavor combination. Only a hint of vinegar really shines through. Some smoke, onion, garlic, and paprika provide those savory notes, and frankly trigger thoughts of your typical BBQ flavor.  In fact, that’s what it is, Ruffles ‘All Dressed’ chips taste a LOT like traditional BBQ flavored chips, with maybe the tiniest twist. There is also plenty of sugary sweetness to go around.  And, there is of course salt, because these are potato chips we are talking about.  So, in that aspect maybe Ruffles flavor description wasn’t completely inaccurate, the chips were salty, savory, & sweet all at the same time, but they certainly weren’t anything new to the flavor game!

As for the potato chips themselves, they were the same old Ruffles thinner rippled potato chips – classically greasy, crispy and delicious!

REVIEW: Ruffles Deep Ridged – Bacon & Cheddar Loaded Potato Skins Potato Chips

Ruffles Deep Ridged - Bacon & Cheddar Loaded Potato Skins

Ruffles, will your quest for the ultimate ridged potato chips ever be complete?!  How deep must your ridges dive to satisfy your wavy urges?  This ridge-sanity must end!!  However, in the meantime, we will gladly crunch away at your Deep Ridged potato chips!!

Correct us if we are wrong, but has Ruffles simply re-branded their line of Ultimate potato chips, under the new moniker Deep Ridged?  And, are “ridges 2X as deep” even more deep than “now with deeper ridges?!?”  Who’s in charge around here?!  “Ruffles have Ridges”, but now those ridges have become 2X’s deeper, and consequently, the most wavy-ridged chips that we have ever laid our lips on.  Wow!  So deep in fact, that our tongues could barely reach the bottoms of their potato chip canyons!

Hold on here!  Stop the Chip Review-ing presses!!  Now we are positive that we already reviewed these chips, but under the ‘Ultimate’ brand?!!  At least with Ruffles Deep Ridged Buffalo Wild Wings Classic Hot Wings flavor, Ruffles was bringing us a new flavor.  Well, since Ruffles can do it, why can’t we.  See below for our description of both Ruffles Ultimate, and Deep Ridged, Bacon & Cheddar Loaded Potato Skins:

Like all of the flavors before them, these chips do not go lightly on the seasoning, however, the flavor recipe is only satisfactory at best.  All of the necessary flavor components are present, but together, the combination, underwhelms.  We taste a lot of smooth sour cream, some bland cheddar cheese, some onion, representing the chives, and then of course, the fake, sweet, smoky and salty bacon aspect (that always reminds us of Baco Bits).

One small detail, or issue, that a handful of us at Chip Review had with these chips, was something we like to call “false advertising”.  Maybe more accurately, “slightly misleading advertising”.  You see, there has to be some reason that Ruffles would deliberately enlarge and highlight the two ingredients BACON & CHEDDAR apart from the Loaded Potato Skins flavor name.  Why?  Because those two ingredients are the best!  And, Ruffles had us believe that were to be accentuated and emboldened, but alas, the chips are simply fake smoky, sour cream and cheddar potato chip.  Eatable yes, but not very reminiscent of the warm, fatty, cohesive, and ultra comforting loaded potato skins!

In the end, regardless of whether Ruffles calls them Deep Ridged or Ultimate, these potato chips are super wavy & rippled, and our mouths appreciate the textural playground!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

Ruffles Deep Ridged - Buffalo Wild Wings Classic Hot Wings Potato Chips

We always get excited here at Chip Review when we see a chip brand utilizing another company’s already established, and easily recognizable, product.  In this case, Ruffles has decided to take advantage of the uber-popular, chicken wing, mega-chain known to all as Buffalo Wild Wings!  We like how it is both risky, and beneficial to the chip company.  Risky, because many people already know how the flavor is supposed to taste, and may have some preconceived notions as to how the flavor should taste on the chips.  Beneficial, because the flavor, or popular product, is already a proven success – so why not ride their tasty coat tails!

We are pleased to report that Ruffles BWW’s classic hot wing flavored potato chips taste pretty great!  Loads and loads of flavor.  And while we can’t confirm with great certainty that the flavor accurately represents BWW’s classic hot wings, we can verify that the chips tasted like buffalo wing sauce flavored chicken wing potato chips to us!  The chips encompass a pungent blast of cayenne and vinegar initially, and then as they mellow, a touch of sweetness, reminiscent of ketchup unveiled itself.  Lastly, a strong, savory chicken flavor presence appeared.  Frito Lay seems to have utilized their same chicken flavor recipe trifecta of chicken fat, broth and powder.  Most recently we spotted this chicken flavor recipe in Doritos Jacked Ranch Dipped Hot Wings.

In the end, regardless of whether Ruffles calls them Deep Ridged or Ultimate, these potato chips are super rippled, and sure are a lot of fun for our mouths to crunch on.  If you like hot wing flavored chips you will not be disappointed!  And while they may not make our Top 5 Buffalo Wing flavored chips, they are certainly up there!
