Translation: The Tasty – Spicy Chile & Lime Flavored Potato Chips

Quite frankly, that translation is spot on.  These are definitely some tasty chile and lime flavored potato chips.

These are not El Sabroso’s first attempt at the popular flavor combination of Chile y Limón, but we would say that they are their most delicious.

El Sabroso’s potato chips may actually be the most heavily seasoned chips that we have ever encountered.  They are loaded, practically caked, with a heavy dusting of ultra flavorful, bright red seasoning.

Extra tangy sour lime paired very nicely with a potently spicy red chile seasoning.

They are definitely fake-fake-fake….  There is no way anything natural in this world is this vividly red; but we can appreciate how they have committed themselves by providing the most boldly colored chips, with an equally tongue burning seasoning!

The chips themselves are no slouch either.  Medium, to medium-thin, potato chips, with an adequate potato flavor, and semi-crispy crunch.

REVIEW: El Sabroso – Salt & Lime Flavored Potato Chips or Papas Fritas Sabor a Sal y Limón

El Sabroso - Salt-LimeWell, hello El Sabroso!  If we had to guess we would say that this particular bag of chips is bilingual!  On the top Spanish half of the bag we’ve got El Sabroso – Papas Fritas – Sabor a Sal y Limón.  On the bottom English half of the bag we’ve got Salt & Lime Flavored – Potato Chips.  But, what about the English translation for the brand name – El Sabroso?  We don’t think that we have ever looked up what the name means, and apparently it would translate to – The Tasty or The Delicious!  Sounds like a great name to us!!

It has been quite a long time since we have tasted or reviewed any strictly LIME flavored chips.  In fact, looking back through the database we discovered that there aren’t very many solely lime flavored chips.  Tons of lime plus chile flavored chips, and plenty of lime plus some other ingredient flavored chips, but when it comes to strictly lime flavored chips we have not tried very many.

While these chips are not very significant in any texture, flavor, or form, it is their refreshing simplicity that just sat very well with us.  And, while these potato chips taste very similar to so many other artificially lime flavored chips, (translation: they taste very much like salt & vinegar seasoning, or in other words, like potato chips that have been thoroughly coated with tongue zinging, ultra-sour, citric acid), we were more than prepared, and satisfied by them.  Mingling with the heavy dose of citric acid, was a dash of real lime juice, giving us just enough of that tingling lime flavor perception.  On the tail end of the flavor, our tongues also noticed a slight hint of sweetness that was a welcome addition to help counter the citrus sour.  Although we are not typically huge fans of very thin potato chips, these papas fritas were pretty good this time.  Very thin, no real potato flavor detectable, only a slight, soft, crunch, and what we would consider a medium size chip.

Overall, these chips were really nothing special, but sometimes that is more than enough, and expectations do not need to be exceeded, but only met!

REVIEW: El Sabroso – Blazin’ Hot Cheese Crunchies

It feels just like yesterday that Cheetos Crunchy Flamin’ Hot paved the way for the spicy cheese puff masses.  However, it has actually been more than two decades, with millions of spicy bags sold, and plenty of crunchy controversy since that momentous achievement.  Today, there are countless other hot & spicy cheese puffs that have copied the cheesy cheetah, and infested the flamin’ marketplace, but not all have been bad.  In fact, probably our favorite of all-time still has to be Old Dutch’s Scorching Hot Cheese Crunchy Curls, sadly their run did not last very long, and they have been discontinued for many years now.

On the surface El Sabroso’s Blazin’ Hot Cheese Crunchies appeared to have all of the facets required to exemplify one of those “tasty predecessors” to Cheetos classic Flamin’ Hot Crunchy curls.  They of course had the standard curl shape and size, bright-bright-bright spicy red, finger coating seasoning, and the obligatory flavor naming of: hot or spicy or flamin’ or scorchin or fill-in the blank with your hot & spicy adjective here.  However, as is the case with the vast majority of flamin’ precursors, expectations have rendered execution to fall short.

El Sabroso’s Crunchies are decent enough.  Their texture is most definitely crunchy, but in a dense, tough and toothsome sort of way.  “Blazin’ Hot?”  Nope, not in the least.  We ate the entire bag without so much as a drop of liquid.  The Crunchies did however exhibit some of that slightly acidic “spicy” quality, but only after a few minutes, and not in our mouths like a chile pepper, but more in our nasal cavities like mustard, or wasabi.  Probably our favorite aspect of these was the actual presence of cheese.  So many, hot or spicy cheese puffs seem to forgo the cheese aspect, and simply blow us away with the spicy.  Lastly, and most surprisingly, these Crunchies also included a wonderful sweet onion flavor existence that really provided some nice background notes to the overall snack.

So, in the end these are decent enough, not the best, but we could probably eat them day and night without too much pressure.

REVIEW: El Sabroso Taco-Litos – Guacamole

Yippee, another rolled (taquito riff) tortilla chip on the market!  We are so pleased…If you sensed a certain level of sarcasm in the air (or, on the screen), you would not be mistaken.  At the risk of sounding like a broken record – we here at Chip Review retain our stance towards this style of chips, and we are not huge fans.

What more can we say regarding the texture of the rolled tortilla chips (El Sabroso’s version turns out to be no different)?  Always too dense, and the crunch is simply too hard, or rigid.  We would love a much lighter and crispier chip – something not so volatile on our mouths.  And their shape really makes them hard to lick (that’s right, we often like to lick the seasoning from our chips).  We also like to eat one chip at a time, and these are really built for mass consumption.  The chips themselves have an extremely unnatural green color, which is not only from the seasoning, but appears to have been blended with the tortilla dough during the process.

To make these chips even worse, the guacamole seasoning bears no resemblance to the taste of real thing at all.  Of course there is the inclusion of some of the standard guacamole ingredients (we’re talking about you – garlic and onion), but this does not say much when these two ingredients are also used on the vast majority of all flavored chips.  We were surprised to see that the ingredients’ list did include avocado powder, but we were even more surprised to see that the ingredients’ list included cheese, sour cream, and buttermilk!!  What?!?  We are huge fans of guacamole, and we’re not sure about you, but we’ve never tasted any guacamole that had cheese in it, and the thought of it actually sounds pretty bad.  Maybe El Sabroso was trying to add some of the salty, fatty, richness that guacamole provides, but the cheese flavor was too apparent and the whole thing just did not work for us.

Lastly, can we just ask…What is a Taco-Lito??  Taquito, we’re pretty sure translates to: little taco.  Is Taco-Lito some type of riff on taco + rolled + little?  Is it just supposed to sound like taquito, but we are not supposed to pay any attention to what it actually means?  Or, maybe these are Lito’s tacos?  Regardless of what it is supposed to be, we do not appreciate having to think so hard while trying to enjoy a chip!!
