BIJOU-REVIEW: Pelican Bay Trading Company – White Cheddar Cheese Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

pelican-white-cheddar-popcornWe crossed paths with this popcorn while visiting St. Louis a couple of weeks back.

That’s right, just some random bag of white cheddar cheese popcorn named after a famous prison…. we kid.  Named after a bay in California (we assume).

Honestly, we can’t find anything about this popcorn on the internet…

The popcorn itself was pretty good.

Full sturdy body to the popcorn.  Not your super light and crispy.  These kernels had some meat and chew to them.

The white cheddar cheese seasoning was both white, and tasted sufficiently like cheddar cheese powder; so, win-win.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Poppin Popcorn – Texas Cheddar Habanero Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips (lip-smacking)

poppin-popcorn-texas-habaneroWe are all familiar with the occasional school fundraiser. Either the local kid stops by the Chip Review headquarters and asks us to buy a wreath, or a candle, to help pay for his trip to Mount Rushmore, or a coworker brings their kid’s fundraiser pamphlet into the office and simply plunks it on your desk to avoid the awkwardness of them asking you to buy some of their kid’s crappy treats to help their school afford the new football field.

Well, as you have probably guessed it, we scored this popcorn through a local fundraiser, and believe it or not, it was almost worth its over-inflated fundraiser price!

Now, we are fairly certain that this is no Non-GMO popcorn (NNGMO).  As the popcorn itself is HUGE!

As for the Texas Cheddar Habanero seasoning, well that is definitely the star of the show.

Ultra cheesy!  A tangy and salty cheddar cheese powder liberally coated every single kernel.

Poppin Popcorn was not joking about the habanero aspect, as this stuff did in fact bring the heat on the tail end.  We couldn’t actually taste any habanero, but we could feel it.

Most tasters agreed that this stuff was lip-smacking, and overall it tasted like an extra spicy cheddar buffalo seasoning – which paired very well with popcorn.

So, the next time your co-worker approaches you with their kid’s fundraiser packet let this be known that inside those pages there may in fact be a hidden gem that is practically worth the price!

BIJOU-REVIEW: G.H. Cretors – Chile Jalapeño White Cheddar Organic Popped Corn

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

G.H. Cretors - Chile Jalapeno PopcornWe certainly would not consider ourselves pessimists here at Chip Review, but upon opening G.H.’s bag of popcorn to the left, we would also certainly call this bag more than half empty with popcorn, or should we say not nearly half full.

In G.H. Cretors’ defense , we’re sure that there is some sort of logistical transport reasoning behind their bag-to-popcorn-to-air ratio, but quite frankly we found this bag’s fill level pretty disappointing.

Luckily the bag was filled with some pretty tasty popcorn!

Large white fluffy popcorn kernels, coated in a savory, slightly funky, white cheddar cheese powder.

Despite the mention of two types of spicy ingredients – both generic “chile pepper”, in addition to jalapeño – we really didn’t get very much chile flavor, or heat from the popcorn.

The white cheddar cheese seasoning did a fairly good job of making up for the lack of heat.  A rich, and creamy, and tangy white cheese powder that sufficiently coated the popcorn.

Is this the greatest popcorn?  No.  Is it more than adequately eatable?  Yes.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Buck Wild – Cheddar Chipotle Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

buck-wild-chipotle-cheddarBuck Wild just continues going buck wild with their new Buck Wild chips!

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn was the first snack of theirs we ever tasted and reviewed.  And now, Buck Wild has done what every smart snack company does, and utilized this same flavoring onto another one of their snacks!

Buck Wild’s corn tortilla chips are really very good.

Light, airy and crispy, along with delivering a hearty body to them.

The chips include a decent scattering of flax and chia seeds throughout.

Chipotle and cheese has become a fairly typical flavor combination in the crunchy snack industry.

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar is quite tasty, but much more reminiscent of a nacho cheese seasoning than anything resembling chipotle flavored.

A very salty seasoning combination packed full of bright orange cheese dust, as well as, a good melange of other zesty, complimentary ingredients.

If you are a chipotle connoisseur than you may not be impressed by these, but if you are a fan of lip-smacking cheese dusted tortilla chips, than we’re sure you are going to enjoy these!

Buck Wild’s new tortilla chips are available (we believe exclusively) at Walmarts nationwide now, or at least very soon.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Kernel Season’s – White Cheddar Crunchin’ Kernels

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips  (notable)

Kernel Season's - White Cheddar Crunchin' KernelsFirst, there was Gladcorn.  The original corn trail blazer!

Next, came Pop’d Kerns with “a corn crunch like no other!”

Heck, even Trader Joe’s tried their hand at a couple of ‘Partially Popped Popcorns’.

And now, Kernel Season’s Crunchin’ Kernels are joining the “half-popped popcorn” club!

Typically white cheddar cheese and popcorn is one of those flavor matches made in heaven.

Unfortunately, Kernel Season’s white cheddar seasoning is not the best cheese powder variation we have tasted.

To further complicate things, the cheddar seasoning does not jive right with the Crunchin’ Kernels.  What exactly doesn’t work, we can’t seem to pinpoint, but we just don’t love it.

These are our least favorite from Kernel Season’s flavor line-up.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Ruffles – Poutine

Rating: ©©©©-3/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Ruffles - PoutinePoutine, EH?

We are not going to consider for even one second that any of you out there could possibly be unfamiliar with Canada’s greatest culinary gift to the world – fries, cheese curds and gravy!

Truth be told, the Poutine Ruffles have been available since summer 2015.  The one caveat, they have remained only available in Canada!?  Meaning that for us here at Chip Review they have been that elusive white rabbit always slipping through our finger tips.

Why Ruffles?  Why would you do this to us for so long?!

Well, the day has finally came, and that elusive white rabbit, or more like white cheese curds, have found their way into chip loving arms thanks to the generosity of Chip Reviews great friend JK!

And you know what?  THESE WERE COMPLETELY WORTH THE WAIT!!  Seriously, really lip-smackingly delicious chips!  We can say without any hesitation that if this flavor was available on our local shelves, we would be spending plenty of our hard earned cash on more of them.

Now, we wouldn’t say that any of us here at Chip Review are seasoned experts when it comes to the likes of poutine, but that being said, we have tasted our fair share of versions (none more delicious than the amazing rendition at Duplex Restaurant in Minneapolis, MN).  Regarding Ruffles’ poutine flavor accuracy as compared to the real dish itself, well, let’s just say that we most definitely taste the fried potatoes (who’d have thunk it), and we also get plenty of rich and salty, beef gravy flavor; but we can’t seem to locate the cheese aspect anywhere in there.  Not even a whisper of cheese.  In Ruffles’ defense, in the actual dish the curds are more about their smooth, squeaky texture than they are about adding any flavor.  So, in that aspect, Ruffles has done a very fine job with these chips!

These may just be our most favorite Ruffles of all-time.  In fact, this means that two out of three of our favorite Ruffles of all-time happen to hail from our neighbors to the north.  And in case you were wondering those three flavors are (no, not All Dressed)  Poutine, Sour Cream ‘N Bacon, and Cheddar & Sour Cream.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Cadia – Cheddar Cheese Baked Corn Curls

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Cadia - Cheddar Cheese CurlsAnd yet another Cheetos substitute….

And by substitute, we of course mean wannabe.  In this case, a healthy wannabe, but still a wannabe that makes us yearn for the real thing!

Oh, don’t look at us like that, you know it’s true.  No matter how close those other brands come, they just can’t replace Chestah’s iconic Crunchy Cheetos!

Now don’t get us wrong, Cadia’s Cheddar Cheese Baked Corn Curls are still lip-smackingly impressive for what they are – a healthier substitute for Cheetos.

Is it wrong that we have mentioned Cheetos more times than Cadia in this review?

Anyways, Cadia’s curls are very well coated in a smooth and creamy cheddar cheese powder.

They could use a touch more salt, I.O.O.

The curls are certainly crunchy, and visually resemble Cheetos, but it is immediately apparent upon crunching on just a few curls that they are lacking the same fatty, mouth coating, appeal of Cheetos.  They are a touch more dry, and dusty.

The cheddar cheese seasoning really saved these curls, and we had no problem crunching on them for a while……but truth be told, we snuck a few Cheetos afterwards to really curb our craving!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
