BIJOU-REVIEW: Poppin Popcorn – Texas Cheddar Habanero Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips (lip-smacking)

poppin-popcorn-texas-habaneroWe are all familiar with the occasional school fundraiser. Either the local kid stops by the Chip Review headquarters and asks us to buy a wreath, or a candle, to help pay for his trip to Mount Rushmore, or a coworker brings their kid’s fundraiser pamphlet into the office and simply plunks it on your desk to avoid the awkwardness of them asking you to buy some of their kid’s crappy treats to help their school afford the new football field.

Well, as you have probably guessed it, we scored this popcorn through a local fundraiser, and believe it or not, it was almost worth its over-inflated fundraiser price!

Now, we are fairly certain that this is no Non-GMO popcorn (NNGMO).  As the popcorn itself is HUGE!

As for the Texas Cheddar Habanero seasoning, well that is definitely the star of the show.

Ultra cheesy!  A tangy and salty cheddar cheese powder liberally coated every single kernel.

Poppin Popcorn was not joking about the habanero aspect, as this stuff did in fact bring the heat on the tail end.  We couldn’t actually taste any habanero, but we could feel it.

Most tasters agreed that this stuff was lip-smacking, and overall it tasted like an extra spicy cheddar buffalo seasoning – which paired very well with popcorn.

So, the next time your co-worker approaches you with their kid’s fundraiser packet let this be known that inside those pages there may in fact be a hidden gem that is practically worth the price!

REVIEW: Cheetos – Avocado Cheese (Japan)

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Cheetos - Avocado and CheeseWe sometimes wonder here at Chip Review if the Japanese population looks at our snack flavors – our Doritos Cool Ranch, our Cheetos Flamin’ Hot, and our Pringles Sour Cream & Onion – and thinks to themselves, wow, now those are those some REALLY WEIRD flavors….!?

Well, we’re betting that the same will be thought of these Avocado & Cheese flavored Cheetos here in our country!

Okay, we know what you are thinking “has Chip Review lost their minds?!? How could avocado cheese flavored Cheetos possibly be good??”  And, for many of you out there, these may in fact not taste very good.  But! There would be no denying that they are unique, and in a weird sorta way, we really dug them.

First of all, are avocados naturally sweet…?  No?  Are certain cheese?!?  We didn’t think so.  Which make us wonder where all of the sweetness is coming from because it is far and away the most predominant flavor on these Cheetos.  What the heck is that about?  Anyhoo, some of the tasters weren’t thrilled with the sweetness, but for those of us who did enjoy it, we really liked it.

Next came the salty-sort of funky-layer that may in fact be cheese, or at least some seasoning meant to represent a cheese flavor.  The seasoning also seems to encompass some sort of Worcestershire-Umami flavor layer.  Avocado? Who knows. There is a rich fatty smooth layer, but can’t quite say that we hit that vegetable layer.

At this point, some tasters began to declare these THE WORST CHEETOS EVER!

In other words, again, we repeat, these are not for everyone, but if you like your Cheetos flavored with sugar, Worcestershire, and tangy salt, well then, these may be for you!

Sorry everyone, hate us if you must (like the way some of our tasters hated these), but to some of us, these really are uniquely delicious!

Well, there you have it.  Anyone else out there tried them yet?  Thoughts?  As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Moscow Mule Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

kettle-brand-moscow-muleWe finally found you!  That’s right, you thought you could hide from us by completely selling out of the entire Chicago area, but NO! we have Chip Review friends everywhere, and with their help you have shown up at our front doorstep, ready to be reviewed just like all the others!

First of all, we’re going to assume that most of you out there know what a Moscow Mule is.  If you do not, a quick Google search will solve that, and we would also recommend finding your local watering hole and procuring one.

Next, let’s take note of the gorgeous copper colored packaging that Kettle Brand has chosen for these chips (sorry our pic is not as nice as it could be – here are some more examples).  There’s no doubt that the shiny metallic top-half of the bag is meant to represent the classic copper mug that a proper Moscow Mule cocktail is traditionally served in.  We are very impressed with the amount of creativity and consideration put into this packaging.  In fact, we’ve quite liked the packaging for all three of the newer Kettle Brand chips.

As far as the Moscow Mule flavor itself goes, well, it is another delicious home run from Kettle Brand.  For what it is worth, it has become very apparent to us here that Kettle Brand has either gone GINGER CRAZY – because all three new flavors that we have tried of theirs, have all been very ginger focused; or, perhaps Kettle Brand just came across a free supply of ginger and thought that they would make the best out of it?!  Either way, it has worked out in our favor, because these are really delicious.

These chips may not be for everyone as they do definitely lean towards the sweeter end of the flavor spectrum, but there’s just something about that unique sweet-sour-pungent combination of ginger and lime that we really enjoy.  The chips are just so aromatic, and refreshing, and tropical, that we felt like they perfectly compliment Kettle Brand’s always fantastic, medium-thick, slightly greasy, potato-ful kettle cooked potato chips.

Don’t quote us but as far as we know it, both these Moscow Mule, along with the new Korean Barbeque, can only be acquired at World Markets. That’s all we know, and we’re sticking to it!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Herr’s Kettle Cooked – Smoked Chipotle Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

herrs-kettle-cooked-smoked-chipotleThese are really quite tasty chips.

After eating quite a few handfuls of these chips the heat of the chipotle chilies did begin to build.

Smoked Chipotle…? Hmmm, that’s sort of redundant isn’t it?  A chipotle by nature is a smoked jalapeño.  So, it is sort of like calling salt, salty, or a grilled cheese, as grilled-grilled cheese.

Overall, we have a tough time calling these CHIPOTLE flavored chips. They are certainly delicious, but we don’t think that chipotle is an accurate description of their flavor – especially the emphasis on the SMOKED.

In fact, these are some of the least smokey chipotle chips we have ever tried.

Let’s just call them some deliciously spicy BBQ potato chips.

And as usual, Herr’s fantastic kettle cooked potato chips do not fail.

Just the right amount of hearty crunch, and potato flavor.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Trader Joe’s – Bollywood Popcorn (Vegan Tikka Masala)

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips (lip-smacking)

trader-joes-bollywood-popcornIs Tikka Masala the new BBQ or Cheddar?  Most likely not, but the Indian flavor does seem to be picking up some traction, as Trader Joe’s Bollywood Popcorn is the second Tikka Masala flavored snack that we have reviewed in as many months.  We can tell you without a doubt, that TJ’s snack version of the flavor, is easily the far superior one!

Every year Trader Joe’s always seems to knock a couple of their new snacks out of the park – last year we loved their Ghost Pepper Lattice Cut Kettle Cooked Potato Chips and the Partially Popped Popcorn …with Butter & Sea Salt, and two years ago it was their Potato Chips with South African Style Seasoning, this year we already praised their Somewhat Spicy Dill flavored Kettle Cooked Potato Chips – and it is fair to say that TJ’s Bollywood Popcorn has joined this lip-smacking list!

To accurately describe to you what exactly this popcorn tastes like we would have to have a much better understanding of Indian cuisine overall.  So, rather that do a half-popped job with that we are just going to plagiarize a few key descriptive words from What’s Good at Trader Joe’s review:

a big, aromatic cloud of cloves and cumin and garam masala, which quickly laid to rest how potent the seasoning might be on a simple popcorn base… Potent is an understatement. My goodness. The best way I can explain it is a “happy heat.” …it builds slowly but surely, with a lot of warmth, and it just lingers on and on, but it’s never overbearing.”

We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves, and so we didn’t.  The popcorn is amazingly fragrant, dusted perfectly with those exotic spices.  And it certainly brings a slightly spicy, steady warmth after a few handfuls.  But above all else, we would describe the popcorn as balanced, and extremely SAVORY.  We just loved it!  If you like popcorn, then you owe it to yourself to give this stuff a try!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Buck Wild – Cheddar Chipotle Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

buck-wild-chipotle-cheddarBuck Wild just continues going buck wild with their new Buck Wild chips!

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn was the first snack of theirs we ever tasted and reviewed.  And now, Buck Wild has done what every smart snack company does, and utilized this same flavoring onto another one of their snacks!

Buck Wild’s corn tortilla chips are really very good.

Light, airy and crispy, along with delivering a hearty body to them.

The chips include a decent scattering of flax and chia seeds throughout.

Chipotle and cheese has become a fairly typical flavor combination in the crunchy snack industry.

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar is quite tasty, but much more reminiscent of a nacho cheese seasoning than anything resembling chipotle flavored.

A very salty seasoning combination packed full of bright orange cheese dust, as well as, a good melange of other zesty, complimentary ingredients.

If you are a chipotle connoisseur than you may not be impressed by these, but if you are a fan of lip-smacking cheese dusted tortilla chips, than we’re sure you are going to enjoy these!

Buck Wild’s new tortilla chips are available (we believe exclusively) at Walmarts nationwide now, or at least very soon.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Popchips Potato Ridges – Tangy Barbeque

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

popchips-ridges-tany-barbequeOK, we are starting to feel a bit redundant here but Popchips just continues to impress us again, and again, with their Potato Ridges line of potato chips.

Popchips new Tangy Barbeque Potato Ridges are yet another lip-smackingly solid addition to the new-ish line of ridged potato crisps.

It has now become apparent to us here at Chip Review that the unifying element that makes this line of Popchips so great is their potato RIDGES texture.

So as to not have to recreate the descriptive words to describe these chips once again:

The Ridges take Popchips into a tasty terrain that we have never encountered with their chips before – SubstantionalPotatofulLand.  We have always thought of Popchips as light, and airy, and crispy, but these Ridges are hearty, sturdy, crunchy, and packed with lots of potato flavor!  We really like’em.  Same standard shape as traditional potato Popchips, only now those potato Popchips a little bit thick (we think), and they have ridges in them (duh!).

As for the Tangy Barbeque, well it is definitely more tangy than TANGY.  Quite frankly they taste an awful lot like Popchips regular bargeque chips.  Slightly smoky, on the sweeter side, with just a lightest hint of tang.  Nothing unusual, but perfectly eatable.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
