REVIEW: Beanfields – Jalapeño Nacho Bean & Rice Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Beanfields - Jalapeno NachoWe said it before, and we’ll just go ahead and say it again….just when we thought Beanfield’s couldn’t possibly do any better than their lip-smacking Nacho flavored or Ranch flavored bean and rice chips, they go and one-up them both with their most lip-smacking creation to date! Wow!!

We know what you are thinking, “sure Chip Review you are impressed with these bean and rice chips for what they are, but when compared to “regular” chips, they don’t really compare, right?!”  Sure, they are most definitely different, we recognize that, it is impossible not to.  And comparing Beanfield’s to your typical tortilla chips is sort of like comparing apples to, something even healthier than apples, if there is such a thing.  That being said, when it comes down to it, we compare chips to chips!  And these new Jalapeño Nacho Bean & Rice Chips from Beanfields are lip-smacking regardless of their type!

First and foremost, the combination of the jalapeño nacho seasoning, paired with the bean and rice chips delivers some fantastically savory chips!  Throw in a decent dose of slightly vegetal, and even more than slightly spicy jalapeño chili flavors, and Beanfields has made the delicious decision to take their classic nacho chips, and build upon them.

However, once again the most amazing aspect of these chips is that they are completely dairy free!  That’s right, vegan.  Absolutely no dairy, meaning no cheese used in their nacho cheese flavored chips……?!?  Huh, what’s that now?  And yet, these chips taste cheesier than many other cheese dust coated chips!  All at once rich, creamy, tangy, funky, and certainly flavorful!  Seriously, honest to truth, these really taste like there is a deliciously salty layer of creamy nacho cheese coating them!

Plain and simple this seasoning is really, really PACKED full of flavor!!

The bean and rice chips themselves are no joke either.  They remind us a lot of other rice chips we’ve tried (like Riceworks), with a good grainy consistency, but at the same time with a much softer crunch – likely due to the inclusion of beans.  The zesty seasoning adheres perfectly to the chips’ texture, and the triangular cut gives them a traditional tortilla chip presence.

We love these chips!  You have to give them a try if you see them!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: PopCorners – Mango Salsa Popped Bean Chips

Rating: ©©-3/4 chips  (tolerable)

Popcorners - Mango Salsa Popped Bean ChipsPopCorner’s slogan used to be “The New Shape of Popcorn,”  apparently now it has changed to “Simply the Better Choice.”  So, the question then arises, was that “simply the better choice”, for “the new shape of popcorn?”

First, let’s point out PopCorner’s beautiful new sophisticated packaging to our left.  The bright white, eye-catching bag with bold orange and blue font popping off of it is eye-catching to say the least.

These chips intrigued us from the get go.  We have always been fans of the popped popcorn chips, but we’re pretty sure that we have never tried any that included popped beans (there has to be a joke in there somewhere in there right?)!!

Just like with the packaging, the actual chips are also quite visually impressive.  Hexagonal in shape, with colors of blue-ish-black, and green mixed in with the typical yellows and whites of popcorn.  The chips sort of reminded us of a multi-colored granite counter top.

Unfortunately, the chips also taste like that same granite counter top…. no, we’re just kidding, they aren’t quite that bad.  But, we can tell you that it is very apparent, right from the first chomp, that this is  not your typical popcorn chip party.  Beans, of three types (black, green split and yellow split), have crashed this shindig, and taken control of the crunchy refreshments!

The beans give the chips a tougher texture and chew, and definitely cause them to dry out quite a bit.  We were reaching for some water after only a couple of chips.

Even probably more odd than their texture was the chips’ seasoning. The mango salsa seasoning started out just like any other mango salsa flavoring, delivering a sweet and tangy, tropical fruity flavor, but that quickly diminished and the seasoning went somewhere we just did not enjoy following.

We don’t know about you but when we think of mango salsa we do not think of paprika, cumin or cinnamon.  Do you?  Didn’t think so.  Pretty sure this seasoning included all three.

Last little gripe, we could have used more salt on these chips to keep them in the savory realm as opposed to the sweet

RATING: Beanfields – Pico De Gallo Bean & Rice Chips

Rating: ©©-1/2 chips  (tolerable)

Beanfield's - Pico de Gallo

This flavor just seems off.  The pico de gallo flavors are muted, and all we really tasted were some unusually smoky, and just too salty, notes.  Not our favorite form Beanfields.

REVIEW: Beanfields – Barbecue Bean & Rice Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Beanfield's - BarbecueAs some of you may know, we like our BBQ chips sort of like ourselves… not too sweet!  Just kidding, about us, not the chips!!

We have to say, overall we have been pretty darn impressed with Beanfield’s Bean & Rice Chips. We know what you are thinking, “sure Chip Review you are impressed with them for what they are, but compared to “regular” chips, they don’t really compare do they?!”  Sure, they are different, we recognize that, and comparing Beanfield’s to your typical tortilla chips is sort of like comparing apples to something even healthier than apples (is there such a thing?), but honestly that’s what we try to do here – compare chips to chips!  And these are lip-smacking chips regardless of type.

Beanfield’s bean and rice chips remind us a lot of other rice chips we’ve tried (like Riceworks), more than they do of other bean chips (like Beanitos).  Beanfield’s chips have a sort of rustic, hearty, toothsome, grainy consistency that provides a distinct texture and crunch.  Softer than your typical corn tortilla chips.  And the seasoning also adheres quite well to the rough texture.

Speaking of Beanfield’s barbecue seasoning blend, their recipe is bold, and packed with loads of flavor!  Not quite as uniquely delicious as their ranch or nacho cheese seasonings but still impressive nonetheless.  Probably what we appreciate so much regarding this seasoning is its overall balance and savoriness.  Like we said above, this is not a sweet bbq seasoning, it’s a bit tangy, a little smoky, and all savory!  The flavor combo just works well with Beanfield’s hearty chips!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Beanfields - Unsalted

Beanfields makes some really decent bean & rice chips, but these ones, well these aren’t among them!  Seriously, we are nearly 100% sure that somewhere within the definition of CHIPS is the word salt!!
