BIJOU-REVIEW: T.G.I. Friday’s – Sweet & Spicy Happy Hour Snack Mix

TGI Friday's - Sweet & Spicy Happy Hour Snack MixIt is about that time, right?

We can only imagine how this over-the-top, disjointed “happy hour snack mix” came to exist.

Dude 1: Hey man, do you have anything we could crunch on with these ice cold brewskies?

Dude 2: Not sure…let me check the cupboards.  Oh yeah, let’s see here…..looks like I’ve got butter toffee peanuts, wasabi peas, roasted almonds, pecans, cashews, some rice crackers, and cajun corn sticks…..oh yeah, and apparently honey mustard pretzels.  What would you like?

Dude 1: Well, it is happy hour, so everything! Mixed together!

And as they say….the rest is history.

Not too much to say about these.  TGI Friday’s has taken a lot, and we do mean A LOT, of high quality products we know and love, and combined them into one sweet & spicy mess of a snack mix.  Despite the weird combination of disconnected crunchy pieces, it somehow all works!!  The wasabi peas are certainly the most dominantly flavor profile, but most of the other mix ingredients play off of the unmistakable nasal heat just fine.  The variety of nuts provide a good level of mouth fat and textural difference, and the pretzels are there to bring everything home, and probably to soak up the beer!

Mix discovered at 7-eleven; Burr Ridge, Illinois

REVIEW: Herr’s – Cajun Cheese Curls

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Herr's - Cajun Cheese Curls

Comments:

Dear Herr’s Cheese Curls,

We here at Chip Review just want to send you a quick little note to let you know that we really do appreciate your willingness, and persistence, to push the cheese curl flavor boundaries, and with that we understand that you will create tasty wonders, and sometimes you won’t…

In this case, we feel that Herr’s Cajun Cheese Curls fall somewhere in the middle.  They are certainly not as delicious as Herr’s Jalapeno Popper, or Deep Dish flavored Cheese Curls, but definitely better than their Bacon Cheddar, and Grilled Cheese flavors.  However, when all is said and done, just look back at those flavor choices and you will understand why we wrote that note above to Herr’s Cheese Curls.  It’s like the saying goes, sometimes you need to be willing to strikeout, if you are going to swing for the fences!!

Herr’s Cajun flavoring, does not seem very authentic in this case.  Instead of exuding the flavors from those principal mainstay ingredients like celery, onion, carrot, parsley, bay leaf and cayenne, Herr’s Curls emit a rather overly salty cheese seasoning, with some prominent background notes of ranch dressing…huh?!?

According to Herr’s somehow zesty Creole spices combined with cool and creamy ranch flavors somehow equals Cajun?  In our opinion, although the cheese curls are Herr’s perfectly crunchable, extra cheesy, but the flavor combo coating them does not jive very well, and seems very forced and simulated.

Whether or not Herr’s was swinging for a home run with these ones isn’t certain, but what we can tell you is that at best they have themselves a single, or maybe a base on balls here.  In the end, we could take them or leave them.  We can tell you that we did really like the bold, bright teal color choice of the packaging.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Zapp’s – Cajun Dill Gator-Tators Kettle Potato Chips

Comments:

We are really big fans of Dill / Pickle flavored chips at Chip Review.  In fact, it is probably fair to say that it is consistently among our Top 5 favorite chip flavors.  That being said, we are always extremely happy when we find a brand that elevates the flavor, or at least executes it impeccably.

Well, that just happens to be the case with these Cajun Dill Gator-Tators, along with many of Zapp’s potato chips.  Zapp’s has composed a wonderful combination of flavors that includes an herbaceous dill aroma with a sour-vinegary pickle, plenty of salt and some spicy Cajun heat.  These chips remind us a bit of Deep River Snack’s New York Spicy Dill, that we recently reviewed, except for Zapp’s Gator-Tators are a bit creamier, or fatty, or rich.  Basically, their flavor just felt more developed and natural.

Like we’ve said before, as far as the potato chips themselves go, Zapp’s knows what they’re doing.   Their Cajun Kettle Recipe makes for some really fresh, crunchy, semi-thick potato chips, that we could munch on all day.  Combined with this near perfect Cajun Dill flavor recipe and we’re left with some really great chips, that may just make Chip Review’s Best Dill Pickle chips of all-time (stay tuned, list coming soon)!

P.S. – not quite sure what Gator-Tators are/mean?  Maybe Zapp’s is simply going with their Louisana Cajun theme?

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
