BIJOU-REVIEW: Buck Wild – Cheddar Chipotle Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

buck-wild-chipotle-cheddarBuck Wild just continues going buck wild with their new Buck Wild chips!

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn was the first snack of theirs we ever tasted and reviewed.  And now, Buck Wild has done what every smart snack company does, and utilized this same flavoring onto another one of their snacks!

Buck Wild’s corn tortilla chips are really very good.

Light, airy and crispy, along with delivering a hearty body to them.

The chips include a decent scattering of flax and chia seeds throughout.

Chipotle and cheese has become a fairly typical flavor combination in the crunchy snack industry.

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar is quite tasty, but much more reminiscent of a nacho cheese seasoning than anything resembling chipotle flavored.

A very salty seasoning combination packed full of bright orange cheese dust, as well as, a good melange of other zesty, complimentary ingredients.

If you are a chipotle connoisseur than you may not be impressed by these, but if you are a fan of lip-smacking cheese dusted tortilla chips, than we’re sure you are going to enjoy these!

Buck Wild’s new tortilla chips are available (we believe exclusively) at Walmarts nationwide now, or at least very soon.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Buck Wild – Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Buck Wild - Chipotle Cheddar PopcornWho is ready to get BUCK WILD in here?!

First things first – how eye-catching-ly, crazy, cool, and hilarious are these bags??  Now granted, Buck Wild sent us this popcorn to review, but we can only imagine that if we were walking our way down the best aisle in the grocery store, and spotted this bold black bag with a sunglasses wearing buck, we would feel obliged to take a closer look.  Upon said closer look we would notice that this particular buck has the largest, or wildest, rack of antlers we have ever seen!  Looks more like tree branches than it does like antlers.  After a bit of a staring contest with the wild buck, we begin to feel a bit uncomfortable.  What is this guy really thinking?  Why exactly is he wearing those shades?  Well, either way, the promise of flavored popcorn within would win us over and we would snag a bag to bring home and crunch on.

Chipotle and Cheddar may sound like, at the very least, a relatively original and wild flavor.  However, a quick glance back through the records and we learned that we have tried a lot more Chipotle and Cheese flavored snacks than we had assumed.  Which begs the question – when does a flavor go from being new, and wild, or unique, to no longer being foreign, and considered a staple in the flavor community?  We’re not exactly sure if Chipotle and Cheese is quite there yet, but we would certainly include flavors such as Sriracha and Chile Limon/Lime.

Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn is thoroughly seasoned with a savory and zesty cheddar powder.  It is certainly SALTY, and yet included a hint of sweetness!  There is some heat that creeps in after a few handfuls, and it even lingers for a while.  But, we do not taste any resemblance of chipotle chili flavor notes within this seasoning recipe.  We enjoyed the flavorful mingling of some sort of spices, but how much, if any, actual chipotle was in there….we’re not sure because we tasted no smokey goodness.

The Buck Wild popcorn kernels we’re irregular with some big, and some little, some uniformly round, while others were oddly shaped.  The kernels had a solid good body to them, with a toothsome bite, and yet they still provided a light and crispy freshness.

Although not the most accurately seasoned popcorn, we did find it notably tasty, and and easily eatable!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Uncle Ray’s – Smokey Chipotle & Jack Cheese Potato Chips

Rating: ©©-1/4 chips  (almost not tolerable)

Uncle Ray's - Chipotle & Jack CheeseChipotle & Jack Cheese…..hmmm, pretty sure that is a new flavor combination for us.

We’ve tried chipotle paired with a lot of different flavors, everything from ranch, to lime, to crema (ewww!), but never with Jack Cheese.

Well, it appears as though Uncle Ray may have a bit of a heavy hand with the salt when it comes to these chips.  And by “may have”, we mean that we are fairly certain, that these are the saltiest chips we have tried in the last year, or two!

Salty, salty, S-A-L-T-Y!!!

We actually, almost, sort of like them, but fear for our lips becoming chapped, or our bodies becoming completely dehydrated, if we eat more than a few.  No joke, we are stopping.

The chips flavor does include some smoke, some salty cheese, a little chile heat, and of course salt.

The potato chips are semi-crunchy, wide rippled, and practically devoid of any recognizable potato flavor from  beyond the salty seasoning.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Late July – Nacho Chipotle Clasico Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©© chips  (notable)

Late July - Nacho ChipotleSo, we ask you, who’s chipotle is it exactly if it is not yours?  Nacho, get it? As in nacho = not your!  Nacho Chipotle!!  Please continue reading, once you have fully composed yourself!  And please note that if you do buy a bag of these chips that they are in fact yours, and you may enjoy them at your own leisure.

A few weeks ago we reviewed Late July’s new Bacon Habanero Tortilla Chips (another flavor from the trio of Taco Truck Inspired tortilla chips from Late July, leaving only Jalapeno Lime left for us to review).  Overall, we thought the Bacon Habanero chips were lip-smacking, and definitely permeating profusely with a pronounced porky presence, but they were also lacking a bit in any true habanero chile presence! (Remember that statement, because apparently it is a trend among the taco truck inspired tortilla chips).

Last year Doritos released their own  JACKED Spicy Street Taco (the eventual winners of the Bold Test Flavor Experience), and we must say that we quite like this trend of tasty taco inspired flavors!  We can only hope that more brands hop on the taco-band(truck)wagon, and we start seeing some flavors like flame grilled skirt steak with chimichurri, or crispy sriracha-lime shrimp!

First, the good.  Late July’s Clasico Tortilla Chips are really fantastic.  Light and crispy, not crunchy, with those lovely little air pockets that give our favorite style of crispy tortilla chips their delicately delicious texture!  Tons of deep corn masa flavor.  These tortilla chips could easily be mistaken texturally for a Doritos tortilla chip in a blind crunch test.  Which is no small feat.  We feel like most other tortilla chip brands steer very clear of that comparison because nobody likes to challenge the big boys, but Late July shows no fear, and creates a very similar light and crispy chip.  The nacho chipotle seasoning itself has a tasty, albeit very subtle, salty cheese seasoning.  We tasted a couple of those other typical nacho flavors like garlic and onion, but beyond that, this seasoning was simply dull!

Alright, now onto the brass tacks, these chips suffer from what we, and we’re guessing our little friend Ms. McStuffins, would call lack-o-spice-atosis!  Maybe Late July is trying to give us much lighter seasoned chip, to keep those sodium levels down, or let the tortilla chips themselves shine.  But, needless to say we were, we are, expecting a lot more flavor with a name like Nacho Chipotle!  We want our tongues to dance and tingle when they lick the chips!  While we can appreciate the health conscientious seasoning gesture, but this is 2015, and we want our seasoned chips to be seasoned heavily!  Of course sometimes a subtle seasoning is suffice, or even preferred, but when we read a flavor name such as Nacho Chipotle we expect all sorts of seasoning!

To top it all off, the seasoning has absolutely no heat!  None.  Seriously!  Wait……  There it is…… No, wait is that it?!  Yep, we’re guessing that the itsy-bitsy, teenie-weenie tickle in the backs of our throats is what Late July is offering up for any real chipotle chile heat on these chips.  In fact, the ingredient list on the back of the bag confirms our assumption, and assertion, as chipotle is the very last ingredient on the list.  We couldn’t even identify any of the obligatory smokiness that confirms we were eating chipotle.

So, overall we were not thrilled with these chips.  We love the tortilla chips themselves, but the seasoning was much too mild for our taste buds.  We will be sticking with the Bacon Habanero chips, that is unless the Jalapeno Lime chips really surprise us!!  We shall see!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles – Chipotle Cheddar

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Pringles - Chipotle Cheddar

Comments:

A couple of years ago we reviewed some Pringles and declared the following:

THESE ARE DELICIOUS!!  These are Pringles, and they are delicious!!!  We checked our records and we can confirm that these are without a doubt, the most daring, boundary pushing and flavorful Pringles we have ever encountered!  Plain and simple, Chip Review feels that these are the best Pringles ever!!

We are happy to report that those Chile con Queso Pringles do still remain at that top spot.  So, why do we bring them up you ask?  Well, because these Chipotle Cheese Pringles remind us a lot of those wonderful delicious Pringles. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if they are practically the same flavor, with maybe only the slightest tweak, or two (or maybe none?).  With all that being said, why would these Chipotle Cheese crisps get a slightly lower rating than those Chile con Queso crisps?  Well, similar to the Doritos Nacho Cheese, or the Cheetos Original Crunchy conundrums; we begin comparing items, and flavors, that are alike, and unless the new chip, crisp, or puff elevates beyond the delicious original, we cannot rate them as highly.

So, rather than waste any time or energy on writing a witty new review, let us simply tell you that if you are looking for a review of these Chipotle Cheese Pringles, than you can read our review for the Chile con Queso Pringles.  You can imagine that these taste very, very similar, and it is plausible to assume that these crisps have a slightly smokier background chile flavor, and maybe not quite the complex range of flavor profiles that those Chile con Queso crisps encompassed.  However, without tasting the two side by side we really cannot pinpoint those differences!  If you were among the lucky people who tried, and liked, the Chile con Queso crisps during their limited time, then we are happy to report that you will like these as well!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
