BIJOU-REVIEW: Trader Joe’s – Mango Coconut Caramel Corn

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Trader Joe's - Mango Coconut Caramel CornMango Coconut Caramel Corn?!?

Does that sound appealing to you?  If the answer to that question is yes, then you are most definitely going to enjoy these.  If the answer to that question is no, then you will most likely be extremely surprised by how tasty this caramel corn truly is!

Initial scents triggered thoughts of tropical far away lands.  Strong notes of coconut, combined with sweet, sticky caramel, and rich butter.

Initial tastes reconfirmed initial thoughts of tropical far away lands!  Delicious far away lands filled with the flavors of sweet caramel and coconut, mingling with fruity mango and rich, smooth butter.

This is some seriously heavily coated popcorn kernels, they have some weight to them.

Large, full, round, popcorn kernels.

Surprising, impressively surprising.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Pop Art – Tandoori Yogurt Gourmet Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips  (notable)

Pop Art - Tandoori Yogurt PopcornLast year we were lucky enough to try Pop Art’s fantastic Thai Coconut Curry Gourmet Popcorn.  In fact, they nearly cracked our Top 10 of 2015.

So, to say that we were excited for Pop Art’s Tandoori Yogurt Gourmet Popcorn would be a huge understatement.

Unfortunately, we were let down by these the very second we popped some handfuls into our mouth holes.

Compared to the unique and explosive Thai Coconut Curry, the Tandoori Yogurt was just plain old tame and muted.

The seasoning was not bad in any way, just simple and bland in every way.

Certainly savory, we’ll give it that.  Also, evoking of a few fleeting thoughts of Indian food.  But really, we could not pinpoint any actual, single, typical Tandoori flavors of ginger, or cumin, or tumeric, or coriander, or yogurt.

All we really tasted was a slightly rich creamy essence, combined with an extra savory jumble of seasoning.  Both of which were scattered evenly across Pop Art’s deliciously light popcorn kernels.

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.

Pop Art – Thai Coconut Curry Gourmet Popcorn

Pop Art - Thai Coconut Curry

Original Review Here

What are the odds of having a second Thai Curry flavored snack on our Top 25 list of the year?   Probably 36.17 to 1, but low and behold, in walks (or pops) Pop Art with their amazingly authentic popcorn.  We were more than blown away by the very first kernel!  So savory, so fragrant, so flavorful, so foreign, and just a touch spicy.  We love this popcorn!

REVIEW: Pop Art – Thai Coconut Curry Gourmet Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Pop Art - Thai Coconut CurryThis popcorn probably, NO, most certainly, deserves a thorough review, but as we tried to formulate the correct descriptive sentences to accurately communicate the amazing deliciousness that is this popcorn, we found ourselves at a loss….plain and simple, this popcorn is delectable and perplexing!

We are not very familiar with Pop Art Gourmet Popcorn other than we have tasted and reviewed their Rosemary Truffle popcorn in the past (which we enjoyed as well).  But, after this Thai Coconut Curry popcorn, we’re thinking that we had better familiarize ourselves with them really quickly!

We checked the database and it looks like we have tried plenty of Thai flavored snacks (which we more often than not – love!), and a few Curry flavored snacks, but never the two together.  Now we know what we have been missing.

This popcorn is so good, and we think that it is also so authentically seasoned.  Truly spot on!  The list of ingredients includes curry powder, lemongrass, coconut milk, curry spices, mustard, lime, turmeric, and more!  And the best part is that we we could actually distinguish a lot of those ingredients, while enjoying tremendously how well they came together!

So savory, so fragrant, so flavorful, so foreign, a little spicy, and so, so, so originally authentic!  It achieves a total food sensation, and somehow makes you feel as if you are really eating curry!

The Thai Curry seasoning blend mingles with the tight, fresh, crispy, toothsome, full bodied popcorn kernels extremely well!  Really good popcorn, combined with great seasoning equals very happy reviewers!

All in all, great lip-smacking popcorn, and we can’t wait to spot some of Pop Art’s other gourmet flavors!

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.

REVIEW: D’vour Tortilla Chips made with Real Coconut – Sea Salt

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

D'vour - Coconut Sea SaltYou put the chip in the coconut and eat ’em bot’ together.  You put the chip in the coconut and you’ll feel better!!

Well, D’vour has opted to flip it around and put the coconut in the chip, and you know what, we do feel better for eating them!!  These are really unique and tasty tortilla chips.  One little taste and there is no doubt that the tortilla chips are flavored or filled with coconut.  Is coconut one of those ingredients that a lot of people do not appreciate until they are an adult?  We were discussing this at Chip Review and a couple of us recall not eating anything with coconut on it as a child.  Those sweet, chewy, strands of toasted, or not, fragrant white coconut just rubbed us the wrong way.  But, something happen along the way and now our palettes appreciate and even look forward to the naturally sweet, unmistakeable flavor that coconut lends to whatever it is mingling with.

Coconut seems to have seen a boom in the snack world as of late.  From what we’ve seen the majority of those snacks have been popcorn, popped in coconut oil, but we are guessing that it is only a matter of time and everyone will be utilizing the naturally sweet, verstile, and fragrant ingredient.  So, what we are wondering is….why the inclusion of coconut?  Why would we choose a chip with coconut, such as D’vour Coconut Tortilla Chips, over other chips?  Is it simply because it’s different?  It’s healthy?  It’s tasty, but we could see how it may not appeal to everyone.  For instance, some of us at Chip Review really enjoyed the addition of coconut (underlying, sweet essence), while others said that they wouldn’t choose these over regular corn tortilla chips for any reason.  We could imagine most people being fine dipping these into salsa, and enjoying the sweet, salty, savory combo.  And some of us at Chip Review were even excited to try the chips with nachos; melting a whole bunch of cheese all over them and seeing how the sweet, salty and cheesy combo works out.

The tortilla chips themselves are of medium thickness, with black and white toasted sesame seeds strewn throughout, adding a deliciously nutty profile and dimension to the chips.  The tortilla chips have a uniquely solid crunch, with a toothsome chew.  We certainly wouldn’t call them a crispy chip, but more of a meaty, full-bodied, hearty, and somewhat grain-y, crunchy chip.  Maybe the shredded coconut actually changes the textural composition of the chips?  Not sure.  Either way, these are some rustic and sturdy chips, and most of us here quite enjoyed them.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: SexyPop Popcorn – Brazilian Coconut

Rating: ©©© chips  (notable)

Sexy Pop - CoconutWe’re eating SexyPop, Yeah!

You other snackers know where it’s at, Yeah!

OK, that’s enough of that, Yeah!!

We know we’ve already used the above joke, but it is too good to pass on (seriously, who names their popcorn SexyPop?!?)

Apparently, that someone is Robert Ehrlich, creator of SexyPop, and of the wildly popular and iconic Pirate’s Booty and Veggie Booty.  We guess we shouldn’t be surprised from someone who named their original snacks after a pirate’s butt!?

Still, the name of course begs the question, what exactly is SexyPop going for with their name? Is their popcorn somehow sexy in and of itself?  Does anyone out there think popcorn is actually sexy??  At least with this flavor, we see the correlation with the cheeky Brazilian Coconut named flavor!  If anyone out there has any opinions or thoughts on this, please share below.

SexyPop’s Brazilian Coconut Popcorn is notable, and certainly something we would not mind munching on again, if it were sitting out at a party where there was nothing else being offered.  In other words, we wouldn’t ever search this popcorn out again.  The coconut flavored / coconut oil popcorn seems to be a bit of a trend going on right now, and our personal favorite is still Lesser Evil’s Buddha Bowl.  Similar to Lesser Evil, SexyPop’s popcorn exhibited that unmistakeable sweet, coconut flavor.  We would have appreciated a lot more salt to offset the flavor.  In the end, the popcorn felt a little one note.  SexyPop’s butterfly style popcorn (as it is apparently called) is a lighter popcorn version than some of the other styles we have reviewed (what those are technically called, we have no clue…maybe some other insect?).  Even though the popcorn was fresh and crispy, it really could have used a lot more salt, and a good splash of some butter or fat or something!

Was it sexy?  No, not in any way that we can think of.

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.

REVIEW: Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl – Himalayan Pink Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Lesser Evil Buddha Bowl - Himalayan Pink PopcornWhat do you get when you mix organic popcorn with organic coconut oil and Himalayan pink salt? If you guessed a Buddha Bowl full of delicious popcorn then you are right on!

Again, we must hand it to Lesser Evil, they are really redefining the always tricky concept of “healthy junk food” snacks.  The variations, and combinations, that they are developing are really unique and interesting, and in this case lip-smacking!

Wow!  Really wow!  First, and very much foremost, there is no denying the fact that this popcorn is brimming with coconut oil.  The bag erupts with a wallop of coconut aroma, and each kernel permeates with pure, rich, tropical, coconut essence!  And in case you are associating sweetness with coconut, we want to make sure that you understand that we are talking about coconut flavor, not that fake sugary stuff found in desserts!  Add to the mix a good scattering of flavorful, Himalayan pink salt, and the end result is really unique and tasty!

The big Buddha Bowl bag was filled quite full of smaller, light, and fresh, crispy popcorn kernels. Nothing really too fancy, just unexpected.  Who thought of this simple, yet unusually decadent twist on popcorn?  Granted, at one point during the tasting “process”, a few tasters thought that Lesser Evil may have crossed over the coconut flavor line a little bit, but we all agreed that we would rather taste too much of it, than not enough!

In the end, we really cannot believe that this popcorn is low calorie. It tastes so full of rich, oily, and deliciously fatty flavor (we mean that in the best way possible), that we would have sworn it had very high fat content, and calorie count!  This is really one deliciously healthy snack!

As Marty the zebra would say “Coconut, Coconut, Coconut, POPCORN!” (any Madagascar fans out there?!?)

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
