Original Reviews Here and Here

Okay, maybe we are cheating just a little bit by including two different mixes with our choice for #17 on this year’s 25 Chips to Christmas; but in our defense there are only so many spots on the list, plus they are both delicious mixes unlike any others we had tried before them.  Seriously, if you are a fan of sweet, salty and spicy snacks, then either one of these unique mixes should be on your ‘must find list’!!  You can thanks us later!

REVIEW: It’s Freakin’ Awesome Nosh Bag

It's Freakin' AwesomeWow, this stuff really is Freakin’ Awesome!  Seriously, it literally is It’s Freakin’ Awesome Nosh Bag!!

Every so often we cross paths with a chip or snack that is a first of its kind.  Heck, just last week we tried our first Mojo Criollo flavored chips, along with chips made from egg whites!  And, what we have here is plain and simple, unlike any other snack, of any sort, that we have ever tried!! It is FREAKIN’ UNIQUE!  It is FREAKIN’ LIP-SMACKING!  It is FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!  May we just point out the product advisory from the back of the bag: “This disruptive tasting snack has corrupted the palates of NCAA athletes to 87-year-old grandmothers.”  Well, let the delicious disruption begin!

First of all, listen to this line-up of just some of the ingredients: peanuts, almonds, dried cranberries, something like, if not, Crispix corn & rice cereal pieces, and caramelized tortilla chips!  CARAMELIZED TORTILLA CHIPS!!  All mingling with spices like cinnamon, cayenne and garlic!  The creative mix definitely leans towards the sweeter end of the flavor spectrum.  However, remaining just savory enough for our own personal taste preferences from the generous usage of peanuts and almonds!  And just sour and tangy enough from the the dried cranberries.  We also absolutely love all of the contrasting textural elements.  Crispy Crispix, crunchy nuts, chewy dried cranberries and crackly corn tortilla chips – oh my!

Did we mention the CARAMELIZED TORTILLA CHIPS yet?!  A golden hued, glossy sugar glaze, coated much of the product inside the Nosh Bag, but none more so than the tortilla chips.  Why this ingenious combination hasn’t been done before (if it has we are unaware), we have no clue!  The thick-ish coating of crystallized sugar envelops the tortilla chips, adding a crispy layer of sweetness that perfectly compliments the natural corn sugars. Sprinkle on a dash of fragrant cinnamon, spicy cayenne and pungent garlic, and our taste buds were shocked and amazed!  If we had one complaint it would most likely be that we could have used a bit more salt included in the equation, but again that is our own personal preference.

The myriad of contrasting ingredients are amazingly cohesive, and despite the unique combination they tasted oddly familiar?  But, we just can’t quite pinpoint what it is…?  Does this combo taste like delicious Nutter Butter cookies?  Caramel corn?  Or, is it a Butter Finger candy bar?  Could it be one of the hundreds of different types of Girl Scout Cookies available today?  In the end, we’re pretty sure it is likely some sort of Christmas cookies that grandma used to make, but frankly we don’t care as long as we have this Nosh Bag in our lives (we say as we shake the bag above our mouths to get those last little crumbs!)!!

We’re not sure if this amazing stuff is available for sale at any retail outlets (you’ve got to be freakin’ kiddin’ us!?!), but we do know that you can clink on their website below and get it headed your way right fast!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Simply Sprouted Way Better Snacks – Oh, My Sweet Punkin Cranberry Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Way Better Snacks - Pumpkin Cranberry Tortilla ChipsBelieve it or not, these are not the first cranberry flavored chips that we have crossed paths with.  That being said, they most definitely are the best tasting ones!!  A deliciously sweet, and sour, and fruity, cranberry combination!

We just love it when we stumble upon one of those rare surprises that make us smile with enjoyment after just one chip!!  Not necessarily because we’ve just tasted the greatest chips, or even something revolutionary, but simply because when we weren’t really expecting to enjoy then, let alone like them very much!  A little special something, what more can we ask for?!?

Immediately upon crunching down on Way Better Snacks rustic tortilla chips, a bright, tangy-sour cranberry essence reveals itself.  The “punkin” aspect was definitely present in the orange hued color of the chips, along with providing a subtle, complimentary, background pumpkin essence.  To round it all out, the chips were salted very, very well!

Probably the most surprising aspect of these chips (even more unusual than the unique cranberry and pumpkin combo), was the fact that the chips were not very sweet at all.  We weren’t necessarily thinking that the chips were going to be so sweet to be called dessert chips, but we were thinking that they were going to have an underlying sweetness.  Great flavor.  The chips deliver on a fresh, cranberry, fruity essence.  In fact, there was so much fruity essence that we suspected that there may be other fruits involved, and wouldn’t you know it, one quick glance to the ingredients list showed that there was raspberries included in the recipe!  Definitely the first chips we’ve tried with raspberries among the ingredients.

As for the chips themselves, what the heck are sprouted grains?  According to Way Better Snacks website: “…seeds, grains and beans play an important role in a healthy diet, but their nutrients can be increased multifold through the process of germination. Germination releases enzymes specifically designed to start the seed on its way to becoming a plant, which in turn consolidate nutrients. Sprouted foods are high in fiber, helps neutralize and remove waste from the body, and some (like our Broccoli and Diakon Radish Seeds) even contain anticancer substances.”  Sounds good to us.

These multigrain tortilla chips are definitely some of the most uniquely textural chips we can think of, and we’ve encountered quite a few.  They remind us of some other chips with unique textures, such as Lundberg’s Mojave Jalapeno Multigrain Chips, Wild Riceworks Sea Salt and Black Sesame Gourmet Wildrice Crisps, and Real McCoy’s Sweet & Spicy Rice Chips. They have a great, seedy-rustic mouth-feel and crunch to them.  We love how we can see the seeds and grains scattered throughout the body of the chips, and we love the unique shape to these ones – it sort of reminds us of a swaying flag.

The chips are probably not for everyone, even among our group there were some detractors, but if you are looking for some fresh and original chips, then these would be for you!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Tyrrell’s – Honey Roast Ham & Cranberry Hand Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©© -3/4 chips  (tolerable)

Comments:

Chip Review always shows appreciation for a new creative flavor combination, but in this case we just can’t fully get behind this bag of chips.  Tyrrell’s hand cooked potato chips, for the most part, are usually a well crafted product. Normally producing a high quality hand cooked potato chip with a creative artisan flavor, but this time, pardon our language, they “screwed the pooch”!

We love the idea of a holiday themed flavor.  And we know this combination can be a winner, at least in real life, with the actual product that the flavor is based on.  I mean who doesn’t associate the flavors of ham and cranberry with the warm cozy feelings of being home for the holidays???  So…..where did these chips go wrong???  Flavor execution, is what we think.  The ham is overly salted, with only a little bit of smoke and none of the richness, or umami, that certain “pork flavored” chips are able to convey.  And, as far as cranberry goes….we did not taste any….zip.

As always Chip Review suggests you give them a taste for yourselves, but don’t say we didn’t warn you…..
