A few months back we reviewed The Original Saratoga Potato Chips, and like we said then, we knew those potato chips were something special from the moment we laid our eyes on their classy, replica packaging. What we weren’t aware of at the time was just how amazing their history really was. According to their website, in 1853:
“A patron at Moon’s Lake House ordered fried potatoes with his meal. The diner complained that the potatoes were too thick and sent them back to the cook.
The cook at the restaurant was George Crum, who is described as Native American in some accounts and an African American in others. There is agreement, however, on Crum’s disposition—he was generally ornery. Upset that someone would criticize his cooking, Crum sliced a new batch of potatoes paper-thin, fried them in boiling oil to a crisp, and then salted them.
But what was intended as a stunt turned into an instant hit – the fussy patron and his friends loved the “crunch potato slices.” Soon the chips became known as Saratoga Chips. At first they were served in restaurants throughout the region. When George Crum left Moon’s Lake Inn to start his own restaurant called “Crumbs House,” he placed large baskets of the chips on every table. It was not long before Saratoga Chips could be found in restaurants up and down the East Coast. Soon they became known as potato chips.” www.originalsaratogachips.com
That’s right, you read that correctly, Moon Brand’s Original Saratoga Potato Chips were the FIRST POTATO CHIPS EVER!! And, what Saratoga Specialties Company is giving us with their For Goodness Shakes product is the power to take their amazing potato chips (or in essence anyone’s chips for that matter), and change them from plain to NY Deli Dill Pickle seasoned in a matter of seconds. Maybe it is a bit of a stretch to review these as their own new chip flavor, but we were so impressed with this creative concept that we felt it imperative to share it with you.
Just imagine the following scenario: you buy a bag of potato chips, you enjoy half of them, but then you realize that you really wish you could change things up a little bit, and have some dill pickle flavored chips, but you only bought one bag. Well, if you happen to have a jar of For Goodness Shakes seasoning, that wish could turn into a reality. Sorry if we sounded a bit like a commercial there, but we are simply trying to enthusiastically, and accurately, explain this revolutionary product concept to you all!!
We would classify Saratoga Specialties Company NY Deli Dill Pickle seasoning among the extremely vinegar-y dill pickle class. First, our tongues were zapped with that powerful vinegar zing, followed by the always recognizable dill weed herb. There was simply no denying that these were dill pickle flavored chips. While we can’t necessarily comment on the level of seasoning of the chips, since we were the ones who determined how well the chips were seasoned, we can say that we did enjoy the overall flavor quite a bit.
Of course, it didn’t hurt that we were using some great potato chips to begin with. Saratoga Specialties uses Yukon Golds, and we think that’s a great choice. The YGs provide a great potato flavor, almost a richness, and definitely some depth. The initial salt level (before we splashed them with the NY Dill Pickle) is very minimal, which lets the potato flavor shine through. The chips are on the smaller, thinner side, and encompass a crispy, light crunch.
We’re not quite sure if this seasoning concept will take off or not, but we sure do applaud Saratoga Specialties Company for pushing the industry boundaries into a realm we have never seen before.
As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.
