REVIEW: Target – Thick Juicy Steak and Horseradish Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Target - Thick Juicy Steak and Horseradish PopcornHuh…no brand name on the front of the bag??  Sort of weird.  Back of the bag shows us that these are made by, or maybe made for, that big red bulls eye store.  Well, we’re just going to go with that, and say that this is Target Popcorn – work for you?  Works for us.

As for the flavor combination – Steak and Horseradish – well, that’s a new one!  We have reviewed a handful of horseradish flavored chips (but they always are paired with cheddar, and never sprinkled onto popcorn mind you).  And, of course we have tried many steak flavored chips.  But the two together – that is a first!

The traditional flavor combination is a proven winner in the real, thick cut, charred and juicy steak world, but how does it translate into the snack, and in this case popcorn, world?  Well, it does alright.  The horseradish aspect is undeniably front and center.  According to the ingredients list, the horseradish appears to be represented using mustard powder, which for all intensive purposes does the trick.  As for the steak half of the equation, well there is a touch of smoke, and heavy splash of salt, with some onion and garlic thrown in to round things out, but as far as actually tasting any steak, or anything even representative of meat – not so much.  Let’s put it this way, this popcorn will most certainly not be making Chip Review’s Top 5 Meat Flavored Chips of All-Time.  Not to say that the seasoning is bad by any means, it just does not taste like Steak and Horseradish.

As for the popcorn, well it is fairly mediocre.  Very light and airy, with a softer end of the spectrum crunch.  Popcorn does not seem like the best vehicle for this seasoning, it has a tough time supporting the bold flavors.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

Barrel O’ Fun – Gardy’s Signature Flavors – Cheddar & Horseradish Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Barrel O' Fun - Cheddar & Horseradish

Comments:

Gardy’s Signature Flavors?  Who is Gardy you ask?  Well, Ron Gardenhire is the Manager for the greatest team in the history of Major League Baseball – the Minnesota Twins (sorry Chicago, our roots run deep).  But, what is Ron Gardenhire doing creating ‘Signature Flavors’ for Barrel O’ Fun (B.O.F.) potato chips???  Well, B.O.F. just happens to be the official potato chips of the Minnesota Twin, and what’s more official than letting the F.M. sign-off on some new flavors?  Enough said.

We’re not sure about any other flavors that Gardy has signed off on, but if these Cheddar & Horseradish are any indication as to the quality and accuracy he believes in, you can sign us up as well!!  These are some great tasting chips.  First, the short-lived, but potent horseradish punch exploded onto our tongues and burnt our nasal passages for that split second before the smooth, and mild cheddar did its job and subdued the wild root.  The cheddar cheese powder added just the right amount of creamy counterbalance to offset the “spicy” horseradish.

The potato chips themselves are also pretty great.  They are thinner, medium sized, with loads of potato flavor.  It’s really amazing how the potato isn’t completely covered up by the horseradish seasoning, but it simply isn’t.  The bag was filled with tons of whole unbroken chips, which is always a bonus (considering these traveled all the way too us from the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes).  We always appreciate when some of the potato peel is left on the edge of the chip.  It just makes the chips feel more real, and rustic.  Which basically sums up everything these chips are all about – you can’t get much more rustic than some potato chips made in northern Minnesota….that is, unless you got Gardy to sign off on them!!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks – Aged Cheddar & Horseradish Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Aged Cheddar Horseradish

Comments:

We have to get something off of our chests, a lot of us at Chip Review “love, love, love horseradish!”

Horseradish is definitely not for everyone. Horseradish, is powerful, in-your-face, abrupt, commanding and people usually fall on either one side of the line, or the other. They either love it, or hate it. We (at least the majority of us here at Chip Review) LOVE IT!

Round of applause please because Deep River Snacks Cheddar & Horseradish Potato Chips certainly do not skimp even a little bit on the horseradish reality. This flavor combo is on FIRE!!! These kettle cooked potato chips are definitely on the spicy end of the horseradish spectrum – they do not shy away from any pungent, nasal burn – in other words, if you can’t handle the “heat” stay out of this bag’s hypothetical kitchen!

The cheddar and horseradish flavor combination seems to have blown up in the recent potato chip past. The spicy and creamy flavor combination, is simply delicious, and just works really, really well. Deep River Snacks’ potato chips are full of flavor, with plenty of that funky, and rich aged cheddar cheese flavor, that juxtaposes and compliments the horseradish half perfectly.

It takes a hearty, full-bodied potato chip to balance out this formidable flavor combo, and luckily Deep River Snacks has some sturdy, thick-cut, super crunchy, and potato-y delicious kettle cooked potato chips seem to be just the chips for the job.

Do yourselves a favor, if you haven’t yet tried these chips, give them a shot. Deep River Snacks makes great kettle cooked potato chips, and these are some of their best!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Pretzel Crisps – Cheddar Horseradish

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Pretzel Crisps - Cheddar Horseradish

Comments:

If you haven’t acquainted yourself with Pretzel Crisps yet, then we’re going to guess you are not avid readers of Chip Review, and to that we say “welcome to our site”, and with just a few clicks of your mouse, you will quickly learn that we have had nothing but great things to say about the entire Pretzel Crisps Family!!

We can’t urge you enough to go out and try these special pretzel-chip hybrids, that is if you are among that small population that still has not.  Imagine great, simple, pretzel flavor, with spot-on, vibrant seasoning and light, crunchy, crisps.  We have yet to taste a single one that we didn’t enjoy.

Well, Cheddar Horseradish is yet another powerful flavor combination that works very, very well with the Pretzel Crisps.  We appreciate the milder horseradish flavor that doesn’t blow our nasal passages away, but yet still burns enough so that we have no doubt we are enjoying the unmistakeable heat that comes with horseradish.  The cheddar half of the equation really compliments, and at the same time suppresses, the pungent horseradish-ness.  At the very finish of the flavor there is a smoky aspect that when combined with those large salt crystals (one of our favorite things about pretzels), rounds everything out very nicely.

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.
