BIJOU-REVIEW: Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut – Dill Pickle Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Kettle Brand KC - Dill PickleWell hello there Kettle Brand!!  It has been a while since we’ve tried anything new from you, and even longer since we tried any new Krinkle Cut style potato chips!

We should probably inform you that when we first spotted Kettle Brand’s new Dill Pickle chips out of the corner of our eye, we were really hoping that Kettle Brand had made the wonderful decision to re-release their fantastically flavored Dill & Sour Cream Krinkle Cut Potato Chips from the early 2000’s!!  Unfortunately, as we took a closer look at the bright green portion of this bag it was very apparent that they had forgotten to include the sour cream (WRONG DECISION, those chips were legendary!!).

We assume that most of you already know that Kettle Brand has some of the thickest, and sturdiest, kettle cooked potato chips on the market.

This particular bag consisted mostly of smaller than normal, wide rippled, whole krinkle cut potato chips.  There was of course the occasional ginormous and oblong one strewn in among the bunch.

Pretty decent potato flavor, with just a touch too much oil.

Kettle Brand’s dill pickle seasoning is nothing special, nothing out of the ordinary, but no complaints either.  A relatively sharp and tangy pickle vinegar mingles effortlessly with a good sprinkling of fragrant dill weed.  Just the right dash of salt balances out the pickle combo.

If you like dill pickle flavored chips then you will be alright with these, but there are definitely more amazing ones available out there!   Just see our All-Time Top 5 Dill Pickle for example!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Roasted Garlic Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Kettle Brand - Roasted GarlicAnd once again we find ourselves at the pivotal crossroads of:  A) do we proceed with opening, tasting and reviewing the last flavor from Kettle Brand’s new trio of chips?  Or,  B) do we hold onto that mystery, that as of yet unknown flavor experience that only comes around every once in a little while?!  Oh, who are we kidding?!?!  We’re talking about new Kettle Brand potato chips here – LET’S RIP THIS BAG OPEN!!
(Oh wait, we forgot about Kettle Brand’s “child-proof”, industrial strength, always difficult to open, chip bags…) scratch original plans – grab the scissors – LET’S CUT THIS BAG OPEN!!

Kettle Brand (sort of) recently released (sorry, we’ve been holding onto our tasting notes for this one quite a while…) three unique new flavors to their ever delicious arsenal.  If there is supposed to be a cohesive flavor theme among this odd group, we do not see it?!  Maybe they are going for bold flavors??  Not sure.  First up, we tasted and reviewed the Pepperoncini flavor.  Honestly, we were easily the most excited for these, and in the end, the most let down as well.  Next up, were the Red Curry flavor.  We found this exotic flavor to be quite impressive and uniquely delicious!  As for the Roasted Garlic flavor, let’s just say that we were pleasantly surprised!

The key to these chips is that the roasted garlic seasoning although rich and powerful, is balanced and not completely overwhelming.  In other words it is merely here to compliment Kettle Brand’s fantastic potato chips.  The garlic delivers a deliciously sweet flavor essence, with the help of some lingering onion in the background, that really does taste like those slow roasted garlic bulbs had been rubbed all of over the potato chips.

Usually garlic is a complimentary or supporting role flavor, but this time around it is front and center.  There are some other seasonings waltzing around this dance, but there is no doubt who the star of the show is!!  We were more than pleasantly surprised with how good these chips were despite simply being garlic flavored chips!  Really, how boring do these sound?  It’s like they are missing some other flavor ingredients…maybe some parmesan or some other cheese, or some chile, or some herbs perhaps?  But, Kettle Brand was confident enough in the savory seasoning they had created, and so they should be!

Plain and simple Kettle Brand’s Roasted Garlic potato chips are very, very easy to eat.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Red Curry Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Kettle Brand - Red CurryEveryone loves to try new chips!  We love to try new chips! You like to try new chips, right?  Oh, to savor in that unknown possibility that you are about to taste something unlike anything you have ever tasted before, and that new something may just become one of your favorite somethings of all-time!!

So, when we spot a trio of new flavored chips from one of our favorite kettle cooked potato chip brands of all-time, we get excited!  Really excited!  Kettle Brand only recently released the three unique new flavors to their arsenal; and if there is actually supposed to be a cohesive flavor theme among this group, we do not easily see it?!  Maybe they are going for bold flavors??  Not sure, either way, here we go.  First up, we tasted and reviewed the Pepperoncini flavor.  Honestly, we were by far the most excited for these, but ended up only enjoying them well enough.  Next up, are the Red Curry flavor.  Which as you will soon read, we found to be rather impressive and uniquely delicious!  Lastly, stay tuned for our review of the Roasted Garlic flavor coming soon.

A not-so-quick tear into the, industrial strength, always difficult to open,  Kettle Brand Red Curry chip bag delivered an immensely powerful aromatic waft of far away lands that penetrated through the air, and triggered memories of…..HOLD ON A SECOND HERE!!  That scent immediately triggered memories of Kettle Brand’s Spicy Thai flavored chips.  Thai Red Curry?!?  Spicy Red Curry?!?  Spicy Thai Red Curry!!?!  Was Kettle Brand trying to pull one over on us here?!  Were these in fact the same chips only renamed and repackaged?  Thankfully, one quick taste, and we can say without a doubt that they are in fact different than one another (to a certain extent).  We’re not sure what unique ingredients the two flavors share?  Lemongrass?  Ginger perhaps?  We’re sure they share red pepper.  Either way, their potent scents are extremely similar, and based on our overall love for the Spicy Thai, things are looking good for these Red Curry!

These really do taste like red curry.  More like a savory (more authentic? regional?) red curry, than your run of the mill, overly sweetened, and drowned with far too much coconut milk red curry! You know those Americanized versions that grace so many of our Thai-American restaurants everywhere, trying to deliver something more easily acceptable for the masses.  None of that here, wich is not to say that there is no sweetness present with these chips, they do deliver a subtle touch of sweetness.  We really appreciate, and admire, how Kettle Brand has opted against the easy flavor button by not emphasizing the coconut aspect.

So what ingredients do we taste in these Red Curry potato chips?  Similar to their Spicy Thai cousins, the Red Curry flavor is complex, rich and deep with almost a gritty earthiness.  In other words, delicious, and unique.  Delivering a delightful mélange of ingredients, even including a few rare ones (one of which we don’t think we have ever spotted in chips before!).  There’s mustard, lemongrass, and even dried mushroom!  MUSHROOM!!  Did someone say umami!  In fact, that is sort of a good way to describe the overall flavor of these chips.  Somewhere in the mix is a dash of red chile, delivering a subdued, put present burn.  We also tasted notes of ginger, tomato powder, onion and garlic.  In other words, a savory ocean of flavor!

We haven’t tried very many curry flavored chips prior to these, but we can tell you without a doubt that these are easily the best!  Combine this great flavor with Kettle Brand’s potato chips, and we’ve found the best chips that we’ve tried so far this year!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Pepperoncini Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Kettle Brand - PepperonciniWe always become a little giddy when one of the big chip brands, and long-time favorites, decides that it is time to release a new flavor (in this case THREE new flavors).  Immediately we were drawn to one flavor in particular.  A strinkingly bright, yellowish-green bag with a single flavor word: PEPPERONCINI!!  We love pepperoncini!  What’s that, you somehow do not know what pepperoncini are…huh?  Well, first of all, shame on you, and secondly, pepperoncini are a variety of ever so slightly sweet, and slightly spicy peppers, made in both Italy and Greece. The peppers are bright greenish-yellow, and most often sliced into little rings, pickled in a brine and jarred. The pickled peppers are used on everything from pasta and sandwiches, to pizza and salads. Here at Chip Review we love them on practically anything (Frosted Flakes, we’re looking at you…), and as far as we are aware, no company has ever attempted to make pepperoncini flavored chips. We have an exciting new flavor first!!

So, to say the least, we had very, very high hopes for these chips. And, as often times is the case, we may have built these up in our minds to something greater than they could have ever possibly become… In other words, they were destined to fail even before we ever tasted that first chip.

All in all, we are sort of torn with these chips.  On the one hand, they are really good chips.  They have a unique flavor combo, sort of like a zippy, slightly sour and tangy, jalapeno flavored potato chip.  With some notes of garlic and onion thrown in to help to round out the overall flavor profile.  They exhibit a light touch of chile heat, but in the end, and on the other hand, we simply wanted more. We needed more.  We wanted pepperoncini!

Just to make sure that we weren’t misjudging these chips unfairly, we did the only clear and reasonable thing we could think of to do.  We put them up against the real thing!  We went back and forth between pepperoncini potato chip and pepperoncini ring.  You know what we determined?  Our initial assessment remained true.  These chips simply did not fully evoke thoughts of real pepperocini.  They needed more commanding sour, more of that potently zesty pickled chile pucker conviction!

The pepperocini seasoning blend paired rather well with Kettle Brand’s deliciously greasy and crunchy, kettle cooked potato chips!  But, you know what we think would have paired even better?  Accurately seasoned PEPPEROCINI flavored chips!!  We like’em, we just don’t really love them!  Here’s hoping that the new Red Curry flavored chips are better than these.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
