REVIEW: Cheetos Sweetos Limited Edition! – Cinnamon Sugar Puffs

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

cheetos-sweetos-cinnaon-sugar-puffsAnytime we see a new sweet variation from one of our typically savory snack companies, we are hesitant to give them a shot.  Which is why last year around this time, when Cheetos first released these Sweetos, we simply refrained from trying them…  Now that we have gone and bitten the bullet….

WHAT WERE WE THINKING!?!?!

Seriously, these are really quite delicious!

That’s right, every once in a while the chip companies can completely surprise us here at Chip Review, and create a fantastically sweet, and in this case, ever so slightly savory snack.  We would place Cheetos Sweetos smack dab along side other notable savory-gone-sweet successful snacks such as: Pretzel Crisps Cinnamon Toast, Snyder’s of Hanover’s S’mores Pretzel Pieces, and Pringles Tortillas Cinnamon Sugar (which in our books is some fine company to be included among).

Cheetos Sweetos Cinnamon Sugar Puffs are shaped like, we’re going to go with, sledding inner tubes – despite the fact that Chester has opted for the more classical racer sled.  The puffs are approximately half the size of a Funyun ring, but their texture is eerily similar.  The Cheetos do not exhibit their usual melt-y cheese puff texture, but more of a light and crispy, layered ring puff.

The ultra classic Cinnamon and Sugar combination works wonders with the puffs.  Delivering all at once an aromatically sweet treat, as well as, a savory richness.  A quick glance at the ingredients list shows that this savory layer has to come from the inclusion of buttermilk.  Everyone who was chomping on these agreed – they are delicious, and hard to stop eating.

Probably the best way that we can describe them to you is that they are like savory Cheetos ring puffs that have been crossed with the greatest of all sweet cereals – Waffle Crisp.  A marriage of rich, savory, butter notes dancing with sweet maple like syrup, and spicy, aromatic cinnamon.  Beautiful.

If you are fans of Cheetos (and we’re guessing that you are – who isn’t?), and you also like some sweet treats every now and again, then we suggest you give these a try.

RATING: Lay’s Kettle Cooked Limited Edition Flavor – Spicy Chili & Cheese Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

lays-kettle-cooked-spicy-chili-cheeseAs we thought to ourselves “Lay’s All New Limited Edition Spicy Chili & Cheese Kettle Cooked Potato Chips are a pretty darn tasty addition to the L.K.C. line-up….and yet, at the same time…..also very familiar.”

Apparently, a little bit too familiar.  A few minutes of Chip Review research and we discovered that a couple of years back we tasted and rated (but no review) Lay’s Kettle Cooked Spicy Cayenne & Cheese Potato Chips, or in other words, what we’re guessing were the SAME EXACT CHIPS!!  We can’t verify the accuracy of this statement for, but if we could locate the  Cayenne & Cheese list of ingredients we’re more than certain they would look exactly like THESE.  We mean come’on, both bags are using the SAME EXACT INGREDIENT PIC!  Bunch of kettle cooked, heavily seasoned potato chips, with a large block of white cheese, and a couple of red chili/cayenne peppers sitting directly in front.

So, long story short, we’ve eaten these chips before.  That being said, technically we did not review them the first go around, so we will take this time to scribe a few descriptive details regarding their flavor.

Lay’s Spicy Chili & Cheese seasoning is not lacking in flavor.  To more or less quote the great Junk Food Guy, these taste a lot like Spicy Nacho Cheese flavored Doritos did a bit too much mingling with Ruffles Sour Cream & Cheddar chips.  In other words, the seasoning has plenty of salty and tangy cheese flavor, a decent enough dash of chili pepper heat, and a surprisingly tasty splash of tart sour cream.  The flavor combo has been used plenty of times before, but that does not make it any less tasty.

All in all, tasty “NEW” limited RE-edition of Lay’s.  We’ll enjoy them while they last.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks Limited Edition – Ninja Ginger Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Ninja GingerFinally, the infamous Limited Edition NINJA GINGER is here!!!

Not to be confused with the Ginger Ninja Trickster, (although we’re betting that these are in fact, his most favorite chips of all-time!).  No, we are talking about Deep River Snack’s Limited Edition Ninja Ginger Kettle Cooked Potato Chips with a KICK!

We learned of these uniquely flavored limited edition potato chips approximately half a year ago via a MICRO-REVIEW posted by Junk Food Guy.  Before even reading a single word from JFG’s glowing review, we knew that these were something that we could, and hopefully eventually would, LOVE!  Time passed, and yet we still could not find this flavor included anywhere Deep River Snacks were sold….
Luckily for us, and for you, if in fact you are reading this, some generous person over at Deep River Snacks recently heard our pleas (okay our whining….begging….call it what you will), and sent a few samples of that sweet golden-yellow beauty above recently to our headquarters.

We have delayed the actual review long enough, lets get into it.  First of all, despite our own personal feelings towards these Ninja Gingers, we do see how they may not be for everyone.  They are flavorful, they are assertive, and they do deliver a ginger-FULL “kick”!  So, like we said, they may not be for everyone, but they are MOST CERTAINLY FOR US!!

It is always a relief, or let’s call it a pleasant surprise, when we crunch upon a new chip that causes our taste bud engines to start firing at full throttle, and question what we are fueling them with!!  Perplexed?  Yes.  Excited?  Certainly.  Impressed?  Without a doubt!!  These Ninja Ginger chips are delicious!  First and foremost, let’s get that straight, these chips are capital D-lishish!  But, you know what, they also really, really remind us of two other chips.

First, would be Kettle Brand’s Spicy Thai (which just so happens to be one of our favorite chips of all-time).  Both Deep River’s and Kettle Brand’s chips utilize the typical utility ingredients of onion and garlic, and both also reference cilantro – we’re guessing more so for color than actual flavor.  Both brands also list the addition of a chili pepper, but while Kettle Brand calls out the jalapeño, Deep River remains illusive with the always generic “chili pepper”.  All that being said, the real, major, synonymous ingredient that both delicious chips share is…. bet you can’t guess it …..yep, that’s right – GINGER!  We cracked the tasty code.

The other chips that we feel like these Ninja Ginger chips remind us of, also happen to be from Deep River Snacks, however they have long been discontinued. Deep River Snack’s Asian Sweet Spicy kettle chips, were some delicious sweet and spicy kettle chips, but that is really all we remember of them.

In the end, all we really want to say is that we love’em.  Medium thick, slightly greasy, perfectly crunchy, kettle cooked potato chips coated with a complex, ginger heavy, sweet, salty and slightly spicy seasoning.  Delicious!!  Easily some of the best chips we have tried this year, and another lip-smacking hit from Deep River Snacks!  If you can find them, you should do yourself a treat and buy them.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Pringles Limited Time Only! – Salted Caramel

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Pringles - Salted CaramelDon’t you just love the holidays?!?!  First, all of the pumpkin flavored, and scented, anythings show up everywhere.  Next, comes of the game birds, and roasting nuts, and warm apple cider.  Then it snows, and you wish you had put up your Christmas lights the weekend prior.  And then, Pringles holiday pandemonium arrives!  That’s right, time to put those snow shovels down for a second, and give a taste to the newest limited edition weird Pringles seasonal flavors!!

Some people are sort of disgusted by the idea of sweet flavorings on salty snacks.  We on the other hand pretty much love trying anything new, or out of the ordinary, and for the most part we have found that those pre-disgusted people would be very surprised if they just gave the snack a shot!

These Salted Caramel flavored Pringles are a good case in point.  They are quite fantastic, and really lip-smackingly tasty!

Pringles potato crisps don’t really provide much flavor on their own so they simply act as a neutral delivery device for letting the seasoning shine, while providing the crispy textural component!  As for the seasoning, well it tasted exactly – E-X-A-C-T-L-Y – like caramel with salt.   Sweet, and buttery, and salty, and the seasoning works with the potato crisps.

Another great job Pringles!  Thanks for continuing to push the flavor combo boundaries, and dabbling in flavors that most other chip companies wouldn’t ever think of trying!

In case you were wondering, below is our ranking of the sweet seasonal Pringles that we have tasted and reviewed:

  1. Tortillas Limited Time Only! – Cinnamon Sugar
  2. Salted Caramel
  3. White Chocolate
  4. Pecan Pie
  5. White Chocolate Peppermint
  6. Cinnamon & Sugar
  7. Milk Chocolate
  8. Pumpkin Pie Spice

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Covered Bridge – Limited Edition Sea Salt Red, White & Blue Old Fashioned Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Covered Bridge - Red, White & BlueStatue of Liberty… Fireworks… Classic flag colors of red, white & blue…??  Oh, we get it!!  Very subtle, and just in the nick of time for this year’s 4th of July celebration – everyone’s favorite CANADIAN chip brand?? – releases for you these limited edition RED, WHITE & BLUE potato chips!!

Alright, go ahead and ask your questions below:

1) Are the potato chips really red, white & blue?  A: Yes, but there are many more white ones than either blue or red.  And yes, the potato chips would look very cool in a bowl on your table this 4th of July.

2) Do the blue and red chips taste different than the white chips?  A: Not really.  Maybe a slightly more nutty, burnt sugars quality essence to them, but for the most part it is just for visual purposes.

3) Do you guys feel at all bad for chomping on our country’s Independence Day themed potato chips made by a Canadian chip company?  A: Heck No. And you shouldn’t either.

There really isn’t too much to be said about Covered Bridge’s tasty tri-color potato chips.  The chips are on the thinner side, extra light and pretty crispy, with a prominent potato flavor.  Sort of like a standard container of mixed nuts, the bag consisted of approximately 50% of the boring ingredient – white potato chips (representing peanuts in the mixed nuts), with the other half made up evenly of blue and red potato chips (almonds, pecans and cashews!).  We were more than satisfied with their sea salt coverage, and felt very patriotic while scarfing down the bag, despite the holiday still being a couple of weeks away.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles Tortillas Limited Time Only! – Cinnamon Sugar

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Pringles Tortillas - Cinnamon SugarHear-ye! Hear-ye!! Pringles holiday pandemonium has arrived!  That’s right, time to put up those Christmas lights, get those shovels out, start brining those turkeys, and of course trying out the limited edition weird Pringles seasonal flavors!!

Lucky for all of us – these are fantastic!!  Really, really lip-smackingly tasty!  We didn’t expect as much, but these are so good we want to write Pringles a letter and tell them to remove that Limited Time Only! label from the canister and keep these beauties around all years long!!

Initially, these Tortillas evoked thoughts of churros.  You know, those long, tubular shaped, fried “doughnuts” from Spain that are often dusted with cinnamon and sugar, and can be eaten while walking the streets of Madrid?  However, by pairing the cinnamon and sugar with a crunchy corn tortilla base, we would classify these as Mexican churros!  Either which way we call it, we still end up with delicious Pringles!

The classic combination of cinnamon and sugar always evokes our inner most childhood memories.  Seriously, our memories associated with the joy of devouring slice upon slice of buttery, cinnamon and sugar toast is so strong, we wonder if that is all we ate growing up?!  The near perfect harmony of the sweet, salty and earthy aromatic notes come together with an explosion in our mouths!  Luckily for all of us, Pringles has hit that combo right on the crisp!!  What really helps these Tortillas to solidify their near perfect harmony is the right amount of salt to help counter and compliment the cinnamon and sugar.  Throw the three ingredients onto a delicious corn tortilla crisp and you’ve got some lip-smacking seasonal crisps!

If you have not yet introduced yourself to Pringles Tortillas line of crisps, we wonder why you are reading this?!?  You’re reading a review of chips, you must be a fan of salty (sometimes sweet) and crunchy snacks, and we’ve been trying to tell you that Pringles Tortillas are among the really good ones for a while now.  So, what are you waiting for, get out there and give them a crunch!!

Let’s try to understand the intricacies of Pringles corn Tortillas crisps themselves.  The Tortillas are a heartier, denser, crunchier, and can we just call them a more “rustic” corn variation of Pringles traditional potato crisps.  Their mouth-feel is similar to the potato-based Pringles, only less brittle on the bite, with a grainier texture.  The crisps do still inhabit Pringles’ classically curved, oval, uniform design, allowing them to stack perfectly in their canister.  And the corn flavor is definitely front and center within these crisps, and like we’ve already said, it pairs very well with this seasoning.  If we had to pinpoint what we actually don’t love about these crisps, it would most likely be that due to the crisps strong, lingering sweet presence, we cannot crunch as many of them as we would like to.  Downing an entire canister of these would most likely result in some form of diabetic shock to any of us!!

Great job Pringles!  Thanks for continuing to push the flavor combo boundaries, and dabbling in flavors that most other chip companies wouldn’t ever think of trying!  As long as you keep coming up with these unique flavors, we’ll keep trying them out!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
