We would like to say that it has been a true pleasure sharing our thoughts with all of you as we chomped our way through hundreds of bags, and countless calories this past year 🙂  Thanks to all of you who follow us each and every day.  We appreciate it, and we wouldn’t be here without each and everyone of you!!  Also, a very special thanks to those snack companies who graciously provided their products for us to review.  It’s a tough job (especially for our waistlines), but someone has got to do it.

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish – Salsa Con Queso

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Puffs - Salsa con Quesof

Comments:

Probably the funniest aspect of these particular golden gill’d Puffs is that of the marketing and packaging by Pepperidge Farm.

‘Salsa Con Queso’.  Literal translation from Spanish to English: ‘Salsa With Cheese’ (and, if you somehow don’t know this, then you need to get your butt out from under that rock of seclusion and take Spanish 101).  There is also, Salsa con Queso, which is a stereotypical Mexican American dish consisting of melted cheese combined with tomato salsa.  The two ingredients meld together to form a richly flavored cheese sauce, often with a bit of spicy kick, and usually accompanied with crunchy tortilla chips.

Pepperidge Farm’s decision to go with the Spanish named flavor, coincides with half of the entire bag of Puffs also being in written in the Spanish language?  So, what exactly was Pepperidge Farm thinking?  Were they expecting more Spanish speaking, and reading, individuals to eat this flavor, over any of their other flavors due to the aptly named flavor?

These little Hispanic-Gold-Puff-Fishies are certainly our least favorite flavor among the trio that we have tasted and reviewed thus far.  The cheese Puffs do not jive quite as well with this flavor as they did with the Buffalo Wing and Cheddar Bacon flavors.  The queso on queso puff action sort of loses the point of salsa con queso – which, in our opinion, always needs the corn tortilla flavor and texture to help counter and balance the flavors of the salsa con queso.  To be honest, the seasoning blend sort of reminds us of pizza flavoring (maybe it has something to do with the chosen combination of cheeses and seasonings, as well as, the strong accompanying tomato flavor?).

Either way, we’re not loving the combination, and if we happen to go Gold Puff fishing again, and we caught this flavor, we would probably play a little ‘catch and release’, and end up throwing them back!!

REVIEW: Pepperidge Farm Goldfish – Cheddar Bacon Puffs

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Pepperidge Farm - Cheddar Bacon Puffsf

Comments:

From the depths of the salty-snack-sea comes the latest wonderfully cheesy venture from everyone’s favorite little golden gill’d swimmers.  Except for this time around Pepperidge Farm’s Goldfish have decided to do some laps in the deep end of the pool and try their best at backstroking their way into the cheesy puff industry (which is definitely not easy to do)!

We noticed the other day that someone over at the Impulsive Buy made the comment “bacon can be an assertive flavor and, if not treated with care, will stomp all over your sandwich, maple-glazed doughnut, or, in this case, cheese puff.”  Well, we say that there are too many snacks out there who claim to bring the bacon, and just don’t deliver on the promise.  So as far as treating that bacon with care……

“To pork with that!!!”   Give us BACON!!!  Like that silly dog on tv says “Bacon, bacon, bacon!”  Bring on the smoky, salty, piggy flavor!!  Go pork, or go home. Take us to “Porkapalooza” please!

Luckily for us Mr. Golffish Puff has brought that bacon in full force.  Just one glance over to the ingredients list and it is clear that Pepperidge Farm was not messing around with the promise of delivering on that bacon flavor.  Vegetarians beware, these are not for you.  The ingredients include: dehydrated pork stock, natural smoke flavoring, and bacon flavored pork fat!?!  Let’s repeat that: dehydrated pork stock, natural smoke flavoring, and bacon flavored pork fat!!! Need we say more?!?  Even with all of that porky goodness, we actually thought that the bacon presence was not too overbearing, and integrated rather nicely with the salty cheddar cheese seasoning.  If you like bacon flavored snacks, we’re quite certain that you would most likely enjoy these.

The texture of these Goldfish Puffs is reminiscent of some long lost cheese puffed snack that we consumed quite often during our youth.  We’re talking about the classic Planters Cheese Balls!!  Anyone else out there grow up devouring those perfectly pop-able cheese rounds?  If you loved them, you’re going to love these!  The Goldfish Puff’s texture is slightly dense, and crunchy, with a more toothsome mouth-feel than your typical, light and airy, industry cheese puffs (ie. Cheetos, Herr’s, etc.).  These Puffs are a bit more than double the size of the original Goldfish Crackers, and they are perfect for popping one at a time, or even a handful, into your mouths.  Either way, the bag probably won’t last that long.

Not only do these puffs taste great, but it felt like we also got our daily intake of protein from them as well.  We didn’t quite love them as much as the Buffalo Wing flavor, but still a great puff.

Pepperidge Farm Goldfish - Buffalo Wing Puffs

The Goldfish Puffs’ texture is reminiscent of some long lost cheese puffed snack that we consumed often during our youth, but what exactly were they again…?  Oh yeah, we’re thinking of the classic Planters Cheese Balls!!  Anyone else out there grow up devouring those perfectly pop-able cheese rounds?  That’s what we thought.  So, lets just say that if you liked them, you’re going to love these!  The Goldfish Puff’s texture is slightly dense, and crunchy, with a more toothsome mouth-feel than your typical, light and airy, industry cheese puffs (ie. These Puffs have quite a bit of deep, rich, cheese flavor.  In fact, they have so much cheese flavor that it still shines through the heavy coating of buffalo wing seasoning.  The buffalo wing seasoning is a bit on the tame side, but does have some notes of cayenne chili heat, even more tangy vinegar splashes, and just a hint of garlic at the finish.  We are most definitely big fans of the cheese and buffalo wing combo (better than the buffalo wing and ranch combos that’s for sure!).

The moral of this story is Pepperidge Farms Goldfish are welcome to swim in our pond whenever they wish.  We thought these were tasty, tasty, tasty!

So far, we have only tasted the Pepperidge Farm’s Buffalo Wing flavored Goldfish, but if this flavor is any indication of the tasty quality that these Puffs encompass, we can’t wait to try the rest.
