BIJOU-REVIEW: 7 Select – Sriracha Kettle Style Potato Chips

Rating: ©©-3/4 chips  (tolerable)

7 Select - Sriracha Potato ChipsThat’s right, yet another addition to the ever growing SRIRACHA flavored snack family.  Is there really any food medium that sriracha can’t, or won’t, attempt to SRIRACHA-IZE?!  Based on the yogurt we recently saw at the grocery store, it doesn’t appear so!

We picked up these latest 7 Select’s on a recent stop to (where else) 7-Eleven.  As usual, we weren’t necessarily excited to try another sriracha flavored potato chip, but we were drawn to the green cap, and the promise of those familiar flavors.

As for those flavors, well, they were present for the most part, but they were SOOOO subtle.

Sweet?  Check.  Probably a touch too sweet in our opinion (but then again we typically say that about any sweet chip, don’t we?).

Spicy?  Nah, not really.  A touch of chili flavor, but not really any heat.

Garlic?  Yep.  What flavored chip doesn’t include garlic?

So, the major flavor players were there but we just weren’t impressed.  Nothing special, nothing bold or commanding.

The kettle chips are wavy, or krinkle cut, and have a really solid crunch, but no potato flavor.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Popchips Potato Ridges – Cheddar & Sour Cream

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

PopChips Potato Ridges - Cheddar & Sour CreamPopchips – love’em or hate’em – there is simply no denying that they have come a long way from being a futuristic like, popped potato chip concept, to a major staple in the vast majority of chip aisles anywhere in the USA, as well as abroad.

We have tried quite a few Popchips over the years, and while we aren’t hugest fans of them in general, we have crunched across a few gems along the way.  Well……with Popchips latest, we are more than pleased to report that Potato Ridges with Cheddar & Sour Cream seasoning can easily be included among this shortlist of gems.  Heck, it may be fair to say that they are even at the top of it!

First of all, lets discuss Popchips new line of Potato Ridges.  The Ridges take Popchips into a tasty terrain that we have never encountered with their chips before – SubstantionalPotatofulLand.  We have always thought of Popchips as light, and airy, and crispy, but these Ridges are hearty, sturdy, crunchy, and packed with lots of potato flavor!  We really like’em.  Same standard shape as traditional potato Popchips, only now those potato Popchips a little bit thick (we think), and they have ridges in them (duh!).

As for the cheddar & sour cream seasoning, well, Popchips knocks it out of the park!  Ultra tangy sharp cheddar cheese mingles with fatty rich sour cream, and makes a beautiful flavor baby!  The more we ate of the chips the more we were reminded of Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream chips, which is very much a compliment.  This seasoning, this flavor combination, was meant, no, was destined to be enjoyed with potatoes, we can’t say it any more plain and simple than that!

In conclusion, if you take nothing more than following two points away from this review, we will be satisfied (and, so will you if you run out and gran yourself some of these!  First of all, these new Popchips Ridges are so tasty that they made our Top 5 Sour Cream & Cheddar chips of all time.  There you have it.  Enough said.  But, probably even more important than that is that they Popchips are deliciously satisfying, and we don’t mean that they are satisfying for being Popchips, we mean that they are DELICIOUSLY SATISFYING for being chips!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Uncle Ray’s – Smokey Chipotle & Jack Cheese Potato Chips

Rating: ©©-1/4 chips  (almost not tolerable)

Uncle Ray's - Chipotle & Jack CheeseChipotle & Jack Cheese…..hmmm, pretty sure that is a new flavor combination for us.

We’ve tried chipotle paired with a lot of different flavors, everything from ranch, to lime, to crema (ewww!), but never with Jack Cheese.

Well, it appears as though Uncle Ray may have a bit of a heavy hand with the salt when it comes to these chips.  And by “may have”, we mean that we are fairly certain, that these are the saltiest chips we have tried in the last year, or two!

Salty, salty, S-A-L-T-Y!!!

We actually, almost, sort of like them, but fear for our lips becoming chapped, or our bodies becoming completely dehydrated, if we eat more than a few.  No joke, we are stopping.

The chips flavor does include some smoke, some salty cheese, a little chile heat, and of course salt.

The potato chips are semi-crunchy, wide rippled, and practically devoid of any recognizable potato flavor from  beyond the salty seasoning.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Old Dutch Appetizers on the Go Ripples – Jalapeño Cream Cheese Poppers Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-3/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Old Dutch Ripples - Jalapeno PopperFinally!  It is about time Old Dutch makes up for taking their delicious Hot Potato Ripples off of the market so many years ago.  Do any of you out there actually remember those?  We devoured many a bag back in the day!

Although we have never really been the biggest fans of real restaurant jalapeño poppers, we apparently really love potato chips that are jalapeno poppers flavored!

For those of you who aren’t in the know, Old Dutch Ripples Appetizers On the Go, are basically a line of flavors based on those typical appetizers found on your everyday bar menu.  You know the ones – sweet potato fries, sliders, onion blossoms, or artichoke dip.

Lets just start out by saying that these chips are hot.  Like wow, serious, very unexpected level of heat, sort of hot!!  This seasoning doesn’t really have that instant tongue burning impact that some chips do, but rather it slowly and steadily builds, and builds, and builds, until your mouth is wishing for a tall glass of milk, or at the very least that Old Dutch would have doubled or tripled the cream cheese ratio to counter their hefty dusting of chili powder!  Oh, who are we kidding we love the jalapeño heat!!

While the seasoning may deliver a very tasty sour tang from the inclusion of buttermilk and sour cream; it somehow, at the same time, does not offer very much in the form of any rich and smooth cream cheese mouth feel.  However, that does not prevent us from loving the spiciest creamy chips that we have ever tasted!

As for Old Dutch’s Ripples potato chips, well, they are of course delicious.  On the thinner side, with probably the most narrow ripples in the wavy chip industry.  At times they can get greasy, but we love them all the same!  Now, if we could only convince Old Dutch to start selling in the Chicago area!

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks – Krinkle Cut Salt & Cracked Pepper Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Deep River Snacks - Krinkle Cut Salt & Cracked Pepper Potato ChipsWe are not the biggest fans of the krinkle cut kettle cooked style of potato chip.  Maybe not quite as crunchy as the kettle cooked waffle cut variety (seriously teeth shattering!), but still a little too solid for our mouths!

Despite their texture, we really dug the seasoning covering these chips.  Impressively simple, and concise! Salt, oil, potato (in chip form of course), and PEPPER!!  Lots and lots of coarsely ground, cracked black pepper!  And no skimping on the salt.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Carolina BBQ Krinkle Cut Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Kettle Brand KC - Carolina BBQKettle Brand really knows how to give us the best kettle cooked krinkle cut potato chips.  They understand that there is a fine line between kettle cooked crispy-crunch, and over the top, tooth cracking, just too crunchy chips.

What exactly is ‘Carolina BBQ’?  Well, these chips taste just like they have been coated with a smoky honey mustard barbecue sauce. So, if that is what Carolina barbecue sauce is, then Kettle Brand has nailed it.  Honestly, we thought Carolina barbecue was supposed to include a touch more vinegar tang, but maybe we are wrong.  Either way, the seasoning goes very well with Kettle Brand’s fantastically, crispy, slightly greasy, perfectly salty potato chips.
