BIJOU-REVIEW: PopCrinkles – Roasted Garlic & Sea Salt Popped Potato Crinkles

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

PopCrinkles - Roast GarlicWe have been striking it pungently rich this year with cloves of delicious garlic snacks!

And we are happy to report that these New PopCrinkles can be easily added to that list!

We had a sneaking feeling PopCrinkles logo looked very familiar, and as it turns out, PopCrinkles are the new “popped potato crinkles”, aka potato crisps, from the creators of “the new shape of popcorn”, aka popcorn chips – PopCorners.

In other words, PopCrinkles has hopped right onto the popular popped potato bus, and hopes to ride it all the way to popular popped potato palace.

If these first crinkles are any indication of the entire flavor line-up than PopCrinkles is definitely headed in the right direction.

The popped potato crinkles are thicker than regular potato chips, and deliver a significantly solid crunch.  And yet at the same time are light and crispy enough that you can eat an entire bag and not really feel a dent in the old chip collector.

The crinkles deliver enough “real” potato flake flavor to evoke thoughts of eating delicious fried potato slices.

The Roasted Garlic & Sea Salt flavor delivers a deliciously well balanced seasoning blend.  Certainly not as powerfully garlic flavored as other garlic chips on the market.

We also wouldn’t go so far as to call it the most authentic representation of roasted garlic flavor, with the inclusion of ingredients such as: sour cream, brown sugar, cheddar cheese, butter powder, whey, and yeast extract…

All in all we are very pleased with PopCorners new PopCrinkles, and hope to see PopPuffs and PopPretzels soon!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Buck Wild – Roasted Garlic Popcorn

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Buck Wild - Roasted Garlic PopcornTime to go BUCK WILD again!
There’s no denying it, that is just fun to say.

A few weeks ago we reviewed Buck Wild’s Chipotle Cheddar Popcorn, and thought it was pretty good, fortunately the Roasted Garlic is even better.

Do you like garlic?  Okay.  But, do you like lots and lots of garlic?  You do?  Perfect, you may pass.

Here’s one of those flavors where there is no question about, or denying of, what flavor is being represented.  The popcorn tastes like roasted garlic – plain and simple.

But….there’s always a “but” right?  But, the flavor depths do not stop at roasted garlic alone.  There also appears to be this somewhat creamy, and certainly rich, flavor layer that according to the list on the back is none other than popcorn’s best friend – BUTTER.

The Buck Wild popcorn kernels are irregular with some big, and some little, some uniformly round, while others were oddly shaped.  The kernels had a solid body delivering a toothsome bite, while still providing a light and crispy freshness.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Uncle Ray’s – Roasted Garlic Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Uncle Ray's - Roasted GarlicGREAT GARLICKY GOODNESS!!

Warning: if you are a vampire, or have an aversion to garlic, you will want to stay away from these!

We can really appreciate the simplicity of these potato chips.

There is not one shred of doubt regarding what the intention of these chips really is.

Plain and simple, garlic flavored potato chips.

We wouldn’t go so far as to call them “roasted” garlic, as we don’t really get much of that sticky-sweet-caramelized garlic flavor.  Instead, these are potent, pungent, GARLIC flavored potato chips.

The potato chips are very thin cut, crispy, and deliver a good amount of delicious potato flavor.

We could eat these all day long, and then we could work the entire next day on getting our breath to smell anything like garlic!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Roasted Garlic Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Kettle Brand - Roasted GarlicAnd once again we find ourselves at the pivotal crossroads of:  A) do we proceed with opening, tasting and reviewing the last flavor from Kettle Brand’s new trio of chips?  Or,  B) do we hold onto that mystery, that as of yet unknown flavor experience that only comes around every once in a little while?!  Oh, who are we kidding?!?!  We’re talking about new Kettle Brand potato chips here – LET’S RIP THIS BAG OPEN!!
(Oh wait, we forgot about Kettle Brand’s “child-proof”, industrial strength, always difficult to open, chip bags…) scratch original plans – grab the scissors – LET’S CUT THIS BAG OPEN!!

Kettle Brand (sort of) recently released (sorry, we’ve been holding onto our tasting notes for this one quite a while…) three unique new flavors to their ever delicious arsenal.  If there is supposed to be a cohesive flavor theme among this odd group, we do not see it?!  Maybe they are going for bold flavors??  Not sure.  First up, we tasted and reviewed the Pepperoncini flavor.  Honestly, we were easily the most excited for these, and in the end, the most let down as well.  Next up, were the Red Curry flavor.  We found this exotic flavor to be quite impressive and uniquely delicious!  As for the Roasted Garlic flavor, let’s just say that we were pleasantly surprised!

The key to these chips is that the roasted garlic seasoning although rich and powerful, is balanced and not completely overwhelming.  In other words it is merely here to compliment Kettle Brand’s fantastic potato chips.  The garlic delivers a deliciously sweet flavor essence, with the help of some lingering onion in the background, that really does taste like those slow roasted garlic bulbs had been rubbed all of over the potato chips.

Usually garlic is a complimentary or supporting role flavor, but this time around it is front and center.  There are some other seasonings waltzing around this dance, but there is no doubt who the star of the show is!!  We were more than pleasantly surprised with how good these chips were despite simply being garlic flavored chips!  Really, how boring do these sound?  It’s like they are missing some other flavor ingredients…maybe some parmesan or some other cheese, or some chile, or some herbs perhaps?  But, Kettle Brand was confident enough in the savory seasoning they had created, and so they should be!

Plain and simple Kettle Brand’s Roasted Garlic potato chips are very, very easy to eat.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Lesser Evil Super 4 Snacks – Kale & Roasted Garlic Baked Bean Bites

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Lesser Evil Super 4 - Roasted Garlic and Kale Bean Bites Crunchier than a traditional snack bite!  More energy for the journey home!  Able to taste better because they are made better!  That’s right…..It’s Super 4!!!

We have to say it again, we weren’t really expecting very much from these Super 4s.  Honestly, we were anticipating mediocre to pleasantly tolerable 4’s at best.  Low and behold the “heavenly perfect crunchy baked bean bites” turned out to be a wonderfully tasty, unforeseen snack to us.  Look at them, they have the Super 4 combo of white beans, quinoa, lentils and chia, and they still taste good!  Come on, sort of sounds like something your vegan friend whipped up for you doesn’t it? Luckily for all of us, Lesser Evil happens to be a much better cook than that crunchy friend of ours!

The bites are sort of shaped like Combos that got into a fight with the super grains gang, and lost all of their fake cheese filling.  And, like smaller, crispy, baked rigatoni pastas.  The tubular bites are super crunchy, and addictively easy to snack through by the handful.  Our only real gripe with them is their lack of fat content.  We were missing some of that rich and satisfying mouth appeal that only fat can provide, and most likely the reason why we do not review vegetables.

The kale and roasted garlic seasoning blend can only be described as surprisingly tasty.  First and predominantly foremost is the slightly sweet roast garlic flavor.  Everything else simply supports this powerhouse flavor.  The seasoning powder evenly scattered across the bites does encompass a green hue, and believe it or not, we could actually taste some of the vegetal kale flavor.  How this seasoning is so flavorful is beyond us because it has fewer ingredients than many plain tortilla chips!

Lesser Evil really has given us a super, modern and fun snack alternative for anyone who’s looking for a great tasting crunchy bite that still tastes like you are enjoying something naughty, but at the same time also has a lot of healthy to it.  There’s no better way to describe them than Lesser Evil!!  Keep pushing those snack boundaries!  Bring on the next snack!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Lay’s Kettle Cooked Lattice Cut – Roasted Garlic & Sea Salt

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Lay's Lattice Cut - Roasted GarlicWhether you call them waffle cut, lattice cut, or criss-cross cut, these uniquely shaped potato chips could definitely be the next big trend in the chip world.  It seems like most recently, the overly POPular, healthier option, of popped snack alternatives have controlled the prime position shelves of our local grocery stores.  Hopefully, those days have come to an end, because it is time for some new snack faces to dominate the crunchy crowd!  When the biggest dog (Frito Lay) decides to hop onto the lattice-cut band wagon, you know the style has become a real player!

While we do not necessarily love the style of lattice cut potato chips, we cannot deny that they are unique, and we most certainly appreciate the textural difference they deliver!  However, that being said, the chips feel more like a challenge to our mouths, than something that we can really sit back and enjoy!  The double sliced, lattice-cross technique results in a lot more fry-able potato chip surface area, and therefore producing an extremely crunchy potato chip.  Just imagine thick cut kettle chips gone wild!  If what you crave are overly crunchy chips, then these may be right up your alley.  We, on the other hand, appreciate our teeth more than we need extra crunchy chips!

Lay’s really nailed the flavor execution on these as well.  They taste exactly how roasted garlic and sea salt taste.  That being said, we simply do not love what we tasted.  “Wait! Didn’t Chip Review give Lay’s Wavy chips (of the same flavor) an extremely lip-smacking rating?”  Yes we did, and aren’t you a perceptive reader!  However, the roasted garlic and sea salt flavor combo does not shine this time, on these chips!  Usually garlic is a complimentary, and supporting role flavor, but this time around it is front and center.  Although the usually pungently spicy flavor has been tamed with a bit of sweet roasting, and the flavor basically feels muted.  We really can’t taste very much garlic from behind these bold, lattice cut, potato chips.  The roast garlic was so subtle that our palettes, or taste buds, didn’t even really notice how garlicky our breath had become until the fragrant garlic perfume began to creep up the backs of our throats, and encompass our entire mouths.

In the end, we just weren’t huge fans of these chips. They are fine, and they deliver on the promise and execution of the said flavor profiles, but the flavor did not jive with the chips for us.  And we’re pretty sure that every vampire within a 50 mile radius of the Chicagoland area could have sensed us coming after eating these.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.
