BIJOU-REVIEW: 7 Select – Smoked Gouda Kettle Style Potato Chips

Rating: ©-3/4 chips  (return to sender)

7-select-smoked-gouda-kettle-styleWe picked up 7 Select’s Smoked Gouda Cheese Kettle Style Potato Chips on a recent stop at….. That’s right, you guessed it 7-Eleven.

What we wish we could say was that at a recent stop to 7-Eleven we happily did not pick up a bag of 7 Select’s Smoked Gouda Cheese Kettle Style Potato Chips….

Because these chips are B – A – D…..  Bad!

Similar to 7 Select’s Maple Bacon Potato Chips the chips suffer, actually fail, from an extremely heavy hand of salt.

Any thoughts of smoked Gouda cheese upon tossing a chip into the chompar are quickly obliterated by the true flavor of these chips – ocean water.

Maybe, just maybe, there is a hint of smoke flavor somewhere off in the distance.

The kettle chips themselves are decent enough, and certainly do their job – that is if there job is technically salt delivery.

Medium-thick cut, Solid crunch, but no potato flavor.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Herr’s Kettle Cooked – Smoked Chipotle Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

herrs-kettle-cooked-smoked-chipotleThese are really quite tasty chips.

After eating quite a few handfuls of these chips the heat of the chipotle chilies did begin to build.

Smoked Chipotle…? Hmmm, that’s sort of redundant isn’t it?  A chipotle by nature is a smoked jalapeño.  So, it is sort of like calling salt, salty, or a grilled cheese, as grilled-grilled cheese.

Overall, we have a tough time calling these CHIPOTLE flavored chips. They are certainly delicious, but we don’t think that chipotle is an accurate description of their flavor – especially the emphasis on the SMOKED.

In fact, these are some of the least smokey chipotle chips we have ever tried.

Let’s just call them some deliciously spicy BBQ potato chips.

And as usual, Herr’s fantastic kettle cooked potato chips do not fail.

Just the right amount of hearty crunch, and potato flavor.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Popcorn, Indiana – Smoky Queso Popcorn

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Popcorn, Indiana - Smokey QuesoSmoky, yes.  But not overly smoky, just a sufficient kiss.

Queso, yes. We are safe in assuming that every single one of you knows that queso = cheese, correct?  Let’s hope so.  Any way, this popcorn is delightfully coated with a creamy-salty cheese powder layer that did the trick for us.

What else can we say?  Popcorn, Indiana strikes again!  Is there any flavor that they have not tried creating?

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Lay’s – Flavor Swap – Smoked Gouda & Chive Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips (lip-smacking)

Lay's - Smoked Gouda & ChiveOne Stays.  One Goes.

Hang onto?  Or, let go?

Two shall enter.  One shall leave.

Alright, you probably get the picture….

That’s right friends, it is that time again.  Lay’s has fried up an all new Potato Chip Promotion – FLAVOR SWAP.  Basically Lay’s is pitting 4 totally brand new flavors up against 4 current market flavors.  In turn, we the consumers vote to save our favorite flavors – either the new, or the old.  Swap, or save.

Lay’s new Smoked Gouda & Chive are going head to head against Lay’s Sour Cream & Cheddar flavor.  That’s a tough match up, against a classic and time tested flavor!

These are really good chips.  Not extraordinary good, but really good.

The Smoked Gouda & Chive seasoning is simple, smooth and pretty accurate.

Just about every other potato chip we actually tasted a hint of smoke.  The cheesy Gouda aspect tasted mild, a little nutty, a little salty, and all smooth.  And lastly the chives added just enough onion punch to cut some of the cheese.  If you love gouda, or heck, ever cheese, you will like these chips.

So, the question is would we SWAP these new chips for the classic Cheddar & Sour Cream?  Well, we have said elsewhere that we would want to keep SAVE the originals, but the more we have thought about it, we would actually change our decision.  SWAP them up*!!

*Honestly, part of our change of heart, and ultimate decision to SWAP them, is due to the fact that Frito Lay’s will forever offer their fantastic Sour Cream & Cheddar flavor on their Ruffles chips!!

And for those of you who aren’t familiar with Lay’s Flavor Swap, here’s the rest of the battles looks like this:

Lay's Flavor Swap

What do you guys think?  Tried any of the new ones?  Or, perhaps there’s one or more of the old flavors that you really want to stay?  Or, perhaps go?

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

Voting ends March 21st, so make sure you go to the link below, and let Lay’s know which flavors should STAY, and which should GO!!

BIJOU-REVIEW: Lundberg Rice Chips – Smoky Maple

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Lundberg - Smoky Maple Rice ChipsWe spotted these intriguingly flavored ‘Smoky Maple’ rice chips just the other day while perusing the new Whole Foods in the neighborhood.

As soon as we tasted these thoughts of Kettle Brand’s Maple Bacon Potato Chips came flooding in, and come to think of it, ‘Smoky Maple’ would have been a much more appropriate flavor name for their chips as well!

Not sure if Lundberg’s Smoky Maple seasoning was simply better than Kettle Brand’s, or if this seasoning just worked better with the rice chips?  The kicker was probably the fact that these chips weren’t trying to proclaim bacon flavor, but rather just let us know that they had been kissed with a hint of smoke.  Combine that with a good splash of sweetness, and yep, smoky maple is what we tasted.

Overall, pretty darn tasty chips.  They had that usual grainy rice texture and consistency.  More body and chew then your typical tortilla chip.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Ziggy’s Kettle Corn – Smokin’ Honey Barbecue with Himalayan Pink Salt

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Ziggy's - BBQTwo years ago we tasted Ziggy’s Kettle Corn for the first time here at Chip Review.  To call the experience deliciously amazing would be an understatement.  While Ziggy’s Buttery Bliss Kettle Corn was a lip-smacking rendition of the classic combination, it was Ziggy’s two other flavors (Sweet & Salty and Happenin’ Jalapeno) that really knocked our socks off!  In fact, just this past year we finally put together our Top 5 Popcorn list, and guess who landed at the top spot!

Well, it is now 2015, and we are betting that it will be yet another great year popcorn!! And, one of those reasons will likely be due to the fact that Ziggy’s has made the superb decision to release 4 all-new flavors!!  Yep, that’s right, everyone’s favorite kettle corn brand has decided to branch out, and try their hand at combining some other flavors with their deliciously sweet and salty popcorn!  Lucky us, we have all four of those flavors in the snack vault, and will be reviewing each and every one in the near future!

A little while ago we started with reviewing Ziggy’s Tomato Basil with Himalayan Pink Salt kettle corn.  We started with tomato basil flavor because it sounded the least interesting to us.  And overall, the kettle corn was good (we can’t imagine any of Ziggy’s Kettle Corn being anything but good), but overall it wasn’t anything very special.  We really couldn’t taste any basil at all, and the tomato didn’t really do anything other than reiterate the sweetness of the kettle corn.  Next up is Ziggy’s Smokin’ Honey Barbecue with Himalayan Pink Salt.  Again, we fear that putting more sweetness onto an already sweet kettle corn maybe redundant and overkill.  We honestly believe that kettle corn is best flavored using ingredients that will juxtapose the sweet notes.  Which is why we are saving Ziggy’s two other new flavors – Kickin’ Buffalo Wing and Savory Chili Lime – for last, because we think think they hold the most promise!

You know what?  The Smokin’ Honey Barbecue is better than we expected.  Sweet, smoky and savory notes flood the air as soon as we open the bag.  Initial thought, this kettle corn evokes thoughts of sweet and smoky bbq meat – probably ribs to be specific.  So, if you are looking for sweet, smoky, savory and salty bbq, and can’t find the real stuff, this kettle corn may just do the trick!  The kettle corn does tread very closely to the too sweet line, but in the end the tangy tomato, fragrant smoke, and salty salt are able to corral that sweetness and deliver a balanced, tasty combination!  The more popcorn we ate, the more we enjoyed it.  Ziggy’s just knows how to produce great sweet and salty kettle cooked popcorn!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.
