Lay's - Tapatio Limon

Comments:

And so it is, for the 5th, and possibly final, (what’s left, Sun Chips?), time that we must inform you of the relationship between Señor Tapatio, and Frito Lay.  We are positive now that the two must have agreed to a spicy exclusive snack partnership, because we’ve spotted (and reviewed) a handful of Tapatio’s hot sauce flavored Frito Lay snacks now!  Señor Tapatio seems to have really hit the jackpot!  So far we’ve seen versions from Doritos, Fritos, Ruffles, Cheetos, and now of course Lay’s can be added to that long list of spicy snacks.

To be frank, these chips taste exactly like they are named.  Simply, nothing more, and nothing less.  The relatively spicy Tapatio hot sauce burns, while the acidic, and citrusy lime flavor shocks the tongue.  The classic combination of chile and lime is once again revealed, and executed. Probably the only thing we find a bit unsuspecting about these chips is that there is no cheese flavor at all.  Each, and every one of the other Tapatio-Frito Lay snacks, seemed to have an underlying cheese flavor among them. For good, or for bad, the cheese flavor was there in all the other; but with these, they simply delivered spicy hot chile and lime.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Cheetos - Tapatio

Comments:

Señor Tapatio, and Frito Lay, must have relatively recently agreed to an exclusive snack partnership between the two of them because we’ve spotted (and reviewed) a handful of Tapatio hot sauce flavored Frito Lay now!  Señor Tapatio seems to have really hit the jackpot!  So far we’ve seen versions from Doritos, Fritos, Ruffles, Lay’s (review forthcoming), and now of course we can add Cheetos to that long illustrious list of spicy snacks.

So far, we’re are absolutely confident in calling these Cheetos our favorites amongst the Tapatio and Frito Lay collaboration.  At first glance these Cheetos’ bright, bright red appearance had us thinking we had accidentally opened a bag of our favorite Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, but one lick and we knew that these Tapatio Cheetos weren’t quite THAT spicy.  However, that’s not to say that these Cheetos didn’t have some heat of their own, because they were packing a bit of a punch.  More than one of our Chip Reviewers used the word “zippy” to describe the Cheetos’ spicy, vinegar-y, and cheesy combo.  The harmonious flavor combination just really worked.  The light and crisp crunch of the Cheetos complimented the spicy, salty and sour notes just right.

Probably our favorite aspect of this particular Tapatio hot sauce flavored Frito Lay snack is how much we could actually taste the cheese in conjunction with the hot sauce flavor, and, how we were hoping, and expecting to do so.  The slight issue we had with all of the other Tapatio flavored snacks was that they all seemed to encompass at least a little bit of cheese flavoring as well, except that in our opinion none of those snacks are naturally associated with cheese flavoring on their own.  Enough said.

Plain and simple, these are tasty and you should give them a try if you spot them on your local shelves.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Doritos – Tapatio Hot Sauce

**Updated 11/25/12

Comments:

And yet another Doritos flavor that makes us believe that Doritos must have had some time on their hands and decided to take a few of their already existing flavors, combine them, and call it something new.  We referenced this same technique with their recent Doritos Jacked – Enchilada Supreme.  This time around we feel like they took their Spicier Nacho Cheese and Buffalo Wing flavors, shook’em up, and created Doritos Tapatio (Salsa Picante) Hot Sauce.

We’re not quite sure that the name fits the chip for us.  We would be much more comfortable calling this Doritos flavor ‘Spicy Pizza’, or Doritos Flamin’ Hot Cheetos….  In fact, how the inclusion of cheese fits into a Hot Sauce flavored chip, is beyond us (we like it, but just don’t get it)?  We are pretty familiar with our hot sauces here at Chip Review, and as far as we remember, Tapatio Hot Sauce does not include, nor taste like cheese, so…..

Never the less, the flavor combination works well with Doritos light and crunchy tortilla chips.  The bright, bright, bright red chips include a prominent cheese forward flavor that ends up blending rather nicely with the spicy Tapatio hot sauce flavor.  Don’t say we didn’t warn you when Doritos puts out a new Spicy Pizza chip not long after they pull these Tapatio chips off the store shelves…..

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
