BIJOU-REVIEW: Target – Sweet Spicy Sriracha Sauce Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips  (notable)

Target - Sriracha Sauce PopcornThe final popcorn from Target’s weirdly random trio of flavored popcorn appears to be the best.  That being said, we wouldn’t really give it much more praise than – it is tasty enough.

Target’s sweet & spicy sriracha sauce does not really taste very authentic; at least when we compare it to any sriracha sauce that we have ever tried.

That being said, the sweet and spicy seasoning does is a tasty enough combination, and certainly pairs well with the popcorn.

Definitely more sweet than spicy, and DEFINITELY more sweet than real sriracha sauce. In fact, sugar in two forms top the list of ingredients.

Chock another mark for the fastest growing snack flavor in the industry – SRIRACHA.  Can you believe that it was over three years ago that we tasted, and reviewed, our very first sriracha flavored chip?

BIJOU-REVIEW: Target – Sweet Saucy Barbecue Rib Popcorn

Rating: ©-3/4 chips  (return to sender)

Target - Sweet Saucy Barbecue Rib PopcornIsh.

You know what this popcorn tastes like?  Sweet and saucy barbecue flavored popcorn.  And you know what flavor does not taste good on popcorn?  Yep, you’re right – sweet and saucy barbecue!

You know the one – overly sweet, generically tomato heavy with no character or depth whatsoever.  We loathe the stuff!

Popcorn itself was OK.  Airy, slightly crispy kernels without much body or chew to them.  And certainly no level of fat or richness to them at all – despite the popcorn actually having 11g of fat…

REVIEW: Target – Thick Juicy Steak and Horseradish Popcorn

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Target - Thick Juicy Steak and Horseradish PopcornHuh…no brand name on the front of the bag??  Sort of weird.  Back of the bag shows us that these are made by, or maybe made for, that big red bulls eye store.  Well, we’re just going to go with that, and say that this is Target Popcorn – work for you?  Works for us.

As for the flavor combination – Steak and Horseradish – well, that’s a new one!  We have reviewed a handful of horseradish flavored chips (but they always are paired with cheddar, and never sprinkled onto popcorn mind you).  And, of course we have tried many steak flavored chips.  But the two together – that is a first!

The traditional flavor combination is a proven winner in the real, thick cut, charred and juicy steak world, but how does it translate into the snack, and in this case popcorn, world?  Well, it does alright.  The horseradish aspect is undeniably front and center.  According to the ingredients list, the horseradish appears to be represented using mustard powder, which for all intensive purposes does the trick.  As for the steak half of the equation, well there is a touch of smoke, and heavy splash of salt, with some onion and garlic thrown in to round things out, but as far as actually tasting any steak, or anything even representative of meat – not so much.  Let’s put it this way, this popcorn will most certainly not be making Chip Review’s Top 5 Meat Flavored Chips of All-Time.  Not to say that the seasoning is bad by any means, it just does not taste like Steak and Horseradish.

As for the popcorn, well it is fairly mediocre.  Very light and airy, with a softer end of the spectrum crunch.  Popcorn does not seem like the best vehicle for this seasoning, it has a tough time supporting the bold flavors.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles Exclusive Flavor! – White Cheddar & Black Pepper

Rating: ©-1/2 chips  (return to sender)

Pringles - White Cheddar & Black PepperWe’re sorry Target, but we just have to say it, as far as Pringles Exclusive Flavors are concerned, you got stuck with the worst of the bunch (thus far at least)!  Seriously, it is one thing to have one good flavor, and one bad flavor, but for both of your Exclusive Flavors to ultimately be less than stellar is just, well, disappointing!!

We have to admit we were pretty excited for these as the cheddar & pepper combination is not one we have seen very much of.  In fact the only other example we can find would be Lay’s Kettle Cooked Lattice Cut’s version, which we thought were lip-smacking!

So, what went wrong Pringles?!?

First of all, other than a tiny black dot here, and an even tinier black dot there, the black pepper aspect of these Pringles is practically nonexistent.  Seriously, some of our tasters could not taste any (nor see any) at all, while others said that they did catch little hints of the slightly spicy and fragrant spice.  This black pepper seasoning was not reminiscent of Pringles regular Salt & Pepper Crisps.  Strike 1.

Even worse than the black pepper facet, was the seasoning combination used to represent the white cheddar cheese!  In one word – Eeewww!  Actually, three words – eeewww, yuck, eewww!!  The seasoning just tastes off.  Apparently, the combination of cheddar cheese, buttermilk, nonfat milk, sugar and citric acid does not sit well with our palates!!  First, a shock of sour hits the tongue, then a creamy-milky wave coats the mouth, and then finally at the tail end we actually taste something recognizable as cheddar cheese powder.  It is almost impressive how weird these taste!  Not our favorite Pringles to say the least.

Still, as always, these are our thoughts, and we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles Exclusive Flavor! – Bourbon Barbecue Chicken

Rating: ©©© chips  (notable)

Prinlges - Bourbon BBQExtra! Extra! Read all about it!  Another all new Exclusive Flavor from Pringles has hit the store shelves!! And this Exclusive Flavor belongs to…..drum roll please….everyone’s favorite, dollar section near the front doors, Archer Farms selling, giant red bullseye – TARGET!  As far as we know it, this marks Target’s very first Pringles exclusive flavor, right?  The vast majority of Pringles Exclusive Flavors thus far have belonged to Walmart, with one, maybe two flavors being carried elsewhere.  Well, here’s hoping Target’s first is a goodie!

Sorry Marvo, didn’t want to be the ones to burst your high hopes bubble, but these are just…OK.  Not nearly as unique or tasty as Pringles Kickin’ Chicken Taco.  Not necessarily bad in any way, just not very unique or original either.  We are certain that if we wouldn’t have read the flavor name before eating these, there is no way we would have been able to pinpoint anything unique about them, and simply called them BBQ flavored.

Speaking of that Bourbon Barbecue Chicken flavor…when we first saw this flavor we had visions of one of our favorite sticky chicken dishes, from one of our favorite Minnesota chain restaurants – Leeann Chin.  BUT, as it turns out, our idea, or vision, of these Pringles should have been more Kentucky BBQ than American-Chinese carryout!

Well, since we are calling this a review, we better say at least something about the crisps themselves (although, we’re going to be honest, we don’t really have very much to say).  Have you ever tried bbq flavored Pringles?  Well then, you already sort of know what these taste like.  Standard Pringles potato crisps – salty, crunchy, stacked – check.  The seasoning was a little bit darker in color than a standard bbq red.  And the Bourbon Barbecue Chicken flavor was maybe a little bit richer, deeper, and what we can only describe as more caramel-ly…if that makes any sense?!?  We can say that we did sort of, way, way, way at the tail end of the flavor catch a hint of chicken presence.  Again, there is no way to be certain that we would have tasted this chicken flavor note without knowing that it should be there.

Overall, the flavor is pretty good, no real complaints, other than just nothing very unique or original about it.  We’re sort of wishing that Pringles had actually gone more along the lines of our original Leean Chin thoughts of the flavor!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
