BIJOU-REVIEW: Simply Balanced – Sweet Chile Organic Rolled Tortilla Chips with brown rice, sesame seeds and flaxseeds

Rating: ©©-1/2 chips  (tolerable)

Simply Balanced - Sweet Chile Rolled Tortilla ChipsSweet Chili flavor, as far as chip flavors go, has forever been one of those flavors we do not get excited for.  If we were picking our own flavor team, we’re more than certain that sweet chili would be one of the last picked, if picked at all.  Sorry Sweet Chili, you and Sweet BBQ are going to have to try again next year!

Another thing we noticed regarding sweet chili flavored chips is that here at Chip Review we tend to enjoy the sweet chili seasoning much more on a potato chip, than we do on a corn tortilla, or some other style chip.  We’re not going to try and determine why that is, we just wanted to let you know.

All that being said, here we have Simply Balanced (Target) Sweet Chile Organic Rolled Tortilla Chips with brown rice, sesame seeds and flaxseeds, and wouldn’t you know it, we don’t really like them for any reason.

The best part of these chips by a long side is the inclusion of the seeds strewn throughout.  The seeds add just enough textural difference to entice the pallet but not quite enough to distract us from the seasoning like we wish they would.

The sweet chili seasoning is exactly like so many others we have tried before.  Of course sweet, very sweet in fact, followed by a strong presence of garlic, and finished with a touch of flavorless heat.

The rolled tortilla chips are fine.  We could certainly crunch on them if someone had set them out at a party or something, but nothing about them has us screaming for more.

Well, there you have it.  Anyone else out there tried them yet?  Thoughts?  As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Doritos Shots – Yoghurt & Herb Mix

Rating: ©©-3/4 chips  (tolerable)

Doritos Shots - Yoghurt & Herb MixHow many of you out there can actually remember the original Doritos 3D chips?

We’re guessing that even fewer of you can remember, or have ever even heard of Doritos Sonic Sour Cream chips?!

Fear not, because Doritos has created Shots Yoghurt & Herb Mix – aka the combination of Doritos original 3D chips, and Doritos Sonic Sour Cream seasoning from the United Emirates.

Unfortunately, this combination is not one we like very much.

First of all, we have never felt like the flavor of Sour Cream / Yoghurt has melded well with corn tortilla chips.  And these shots, with the additional ‘herb mix’ are no different.

But, even worse than the seasoning is the unpleasing texture of these shots.  Where as Doritos’ 3Ds would crunch very similarly to their traditional chips; providing a light, softer, crispy crunch.  These Doritos Shots are rigid, with a too strong-solid-toothsome crunch.  In other words they do not make us think of Doritos at all, and they do not treat our mouths kindly!

Well, there you have it.  Anyone else out there tried them yet?  Thoughts?  As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: 7 Select – Spicy Guacamole Thin Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

7eleven - Spicy Guacamole Tortilla ChipsWhat do we have here?  Spicy Guacamole thin tortilla chips?  Yes please!

Punch to the tongue.  Great flavor.

Spicy chili pepper heat forward.

Delicious cayenne pepper sauce flavor, with notes of garlic and vinegar.

Followed by a tangy, vegetal, even more garlicky, and creamy buttermilk seasoning.

Does anything actually taste like guacamole?  No, not really.  There’s definitely no avocado among the ingredients.  But, the seasoning is delicious, and unlike anything else we have ever really tried – and that even goes for other spicy guacamole chips we have tried.

7 Select’s thin tortilla chips are light and crispy.  They pair perfectly with the seasoning.  Impressive convenience store chips to say the least.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Late July – Buffalo Queso Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-3/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Late July - Buffalo QuesoOkay Late July Snacks, we’re not exactly sure where it is that you are trying all of these odd flavored taco truck inspirations (Bacon Habanero – really?! or Sriracha Fresca – whoa!), but if those tacos taste anything like these tortilla chips (which are inspired by them) – well, then we need to get moving right away, and go give these taco trucks a try!  Ahhhh, who are we kidding?  We’re just going to stay put, and keep enjoying these chips instead!

That’s right Chip Review readers, Late July Snacks strikes again!  This time with their lip-smackingly delicious all new Buffalo Queso Clasico Tortilla Chips!!  And dare we say that these are our most favorite flavor to date.

First things first, we’re thinking that these chips should have probably been called QUESO Buffalo, instead of Buffalo Queso, as the cheese half of the equation is without a doubt the most pronounced and delicious aspect of this flavor combination.  In fact, these buffalo queso flavored chips are probably the first of their flavor kind that we have tasted sooo much cheese up front.  Typically the cheese plays second fiddle to the powerful buffalo ingredients, but not this time.  This time, queso takes the lead, and dominates the flavor show!  And that queso is all at once tangy, salty, creamy, a little funky, and of course delicious to the very last crunch.

As for the buffalo notes, they are certainly there, but they just aren’t quite as bold and overbearing as they typically are with buffalo sauce.  We taste a good amount of vinegar and garlic, mingling with just enough cayenne chili pepper, to trigger thoughts of buffalo sauce.  Honestly, these chips sort of remind us of the late great Doritos Blazin’ Buffalo & Ranch (only minus the ranch).  If we had one gripe with Late July’s buffalo though (which would probably be our only gripe with the chips at all), it would be that we wished they delivered a touch more heat.  A bit more burn – zip – pow!

But overall, WOW – these are just top notch tortilla chips!  Really flavorful, and really fantastic!  The flavors are bright, and not muddled.  We can actually taste and identify the multiple layers of flavor, including the superb corn tortilla chip.  You know what, these chips taste like light, fresh, crispy corn tortilla chips that have been slathered with a great melting cheese, and a deliciously, mild buffalo sauce.

If you see Late July Organic Chips in your neck of the woods, do yourself a favor and give them a try – all of them!

BIJOU-REVIEW: Simply Sprouted Way Better Snacks – A Nacho Above Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Simply Sprouted Way Better Snacks - A Nacho AboveYep, that’s right, just when you thought that you had gotten your fill of nacho flavored, healthier option chips – we’ve got this week’s second review!

Way Better Snacks (WBS) delivers some notably healthy deliciousness, but they aren’t quite up to the level of amazing that Beanfields Jalapeño Nacho Bean & Rice Chips delivered just days ago!

In all honesty we tasted these new WBS at the same sitting as we tried those Beanfield chips, and it wasn’t really fair to WBS.  Beanfield’s Jalapeño Nacho seasoning was so powerfully packed with flavor that they made these chips taste like they had no seasoning at all!

We’ve enjoyed about half of the offering we have tried from Way Better Snacks, and we would put these among that category.  There’s just something about those slightly sweet and seedy, sprouted tortilla chips that our taste buds really enjoy.

As for the ‘A Nacho Above’ seasoning, well, we stick by our initial tasting thoughts that this stuff is very, very subtle.  Only a light dusting of orange seasoning has been applied to the chips.  The seasoning tastes very much like cheddar cheese powder.  We really didn’t get any background seasoning notes, and certainly no level of nacho heat.

Overall though, the light cheese coating does jive very well with WBS’s naturally sweet and diversely textured tortilla chips.  We had no problem crunching our way through these, they just didn’t wow us in any way either.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Beanfields – Jalapeño Nacho Bean & Rice Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Beanfields - Jalapeno NachoWe said it before, and we’ll just go ahead and say it again….just when we thought Beanfield’s couldn’t possibly do any better than their lip-smacking Nacho flavored or Ranch flavored bean and rice chips, they go and one-up them both with their most lip-smacking creation to date! Wow!!

We know what you are thinking, “sure Chip Review you are impressed with these bean and rice chips for what they are, but when compared to “regular” chips, they don’t really compare, right?!”  Sure, they are most definitely different, we recognize that, it is impossible not to.  And comparing Beanfield’s to your typical tortilla chips is sort of like comparing apples to, something even healthier than apples, if there is such a thing.  That being said, when it comes down to it, we compare chips to chips!  And these new Jalapeño Nacho Bean & Rice Chips from Beanfields are lip-smacking regardless of their type!

First and foremost, the combination of the jalapeño nacho seasoning, paired with the bean and rice chips delivers some fantastically savory chips!  Throw in a decent dose of slightly vegetal, and even more than slightly spicy jalapeño chili flavors, and Beanfields has made the delicious decision to take their classic nacho chips, and build upon them.

However, once again the most amazing aspect of these chips is that they are completely dairy free!  That’s right, vegan.  Absolutely no dairy, meaning no cheese used in their nacho cheese flavored chips……?!?  Huh, what’s that now?  And yet, these chips taste cheesier than many other cheese dust coated chips!  All at once rich, creamy, tangy, funky, and certainly flavorful!  Seriously, honest to truth, these really taste like there is a deliciously salty layer of creamy nacho cheese coating them!

Plain and simple this seasoning is really, really PACKED full of flavor!!

The bean and rice chips themselves are no joke either.  They remind us a lot of other rice chips we’ve tried (like Riceworks), with a good grainy consistency, but at the same time with a much softer crunch – likely due to the inclusion of beans.  The zesty seasoning adheres perfectly to the chips’ texture, and the triangular cut gives them a traditional tortilla chip presence.

We love these chips!  You have to give them a try if you see them!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
