Terra – Sharp & Spicy Wasabi

Original Review Here

We were rather worried earlier this year when Terra released, what we consider to be, some of the worst chips of the year – Aged Cheese flavored Celery Root Chips!  Luckily, later this year Terra recovered big time, with their Wasabi chips.

REVIEW: Terra – Sharp & Spicy Wasabi

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

terra-wasabiWe’re sorry to say it, but we feel like we do not review very many Terra chips these days.  Now, whether that is due to Terra not introducing many new chips onto the market these days, or the fact that when they do release something new it is very often some sort of unusual vegetable chip that we’re just not feeling like reviewing….

What we do know for sure is that when we do try a new chip from Terra, whether it is good or bad, it is almost always something very unique and original!

Case in point, Terra’s newest Sharp & Spicy Wasabi real vegetable chips made with a UNIQUE seasonal potato blend.  While these Wasabi flavored chips may not be as unique as the last chips we reviewed from Terra, we’re talking about you – Celery Root Chips w/ Aged Cheese!!  Terra’s Wasabi chips are most certainly better tasting!

Now, if you are a huge fan of wasabi’s typically pungent, nose burning heat, and that is what you are really looking for from these then you may be somewhat disappointed.  These chips are not about the seasoning at all.  The seasoning is very subtle, and is just there to compliment the fantastic potato chips.  A simple, perfect sprinkling of just the right amount of salt, and only delicate dash of what tasted like mustard powder.

As for those fantastic potato chips, well apparently they are made up of a seasonal selection of four types of potatoes.  There’s Andover, Atlantic, Marcy and Waneta potatoes (and if those names mean anything to you, then bravo for being up on your potato varietal knowledge).  What we can tell you is that we did not really notice any textural, or flavor, difference from chip to chip, but all together the seasonal variety delivered a fantastically rich, buttery, and earthy flavor combo.  Seriously, chip for chip these were some of the best tasting potato chips we’ve tried in a while.  Really, nothing to do with the seasoning, all about the chip!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: T.G.I. Friday’s – Sweet & Spicy Happy Hour Snack Mix

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

TGI Friday's - Sweet & Spicy Happy Hour Snack MixIt is about that time, right?

We can only imagine how this over-the-top, disjointed “happy hour snack mix” came to exist.

Dude 1: Hey man, do you have anything we could crunch on with these ice cold brewskies?

Dude 2: Not sure…let me check the cupboards.  Oh yeah, let’s see here…..looks like I’ve got butter toffee peanuts, wasabi peas, roasted almonds, pecans, cashews, some rice crackers, and cajun corn sticks…..oh yeah, and apparently honey mustard pretzels.  What would you like?

Dude 1: Well, it is happy hour, so everything! Mixed together!

And as they say….the rest is history.

Not too much to say about these.  TGI Friday’s has taken a lot, and we do mean A LOT, of high quality products we know and love, and combined them into one sweet & spicy mess of a snack mix.  Despite the weird combination of disconnected crunchy pieces, it somehow all works!!  The wasabi peas are certainly the most dominantly flavor profile, but most of the other mix ingredients play off of the unmistakable nasal heat just fine.  The variety of nuts provide a good level of mouth fat and textural difference, and the pretzels are there to bring everything home, and probably to soak up the beer!

BIJOU-REVIEW: GimMe Chips – Wasabi Seaweed Rice Chips

Rating©©-3/4 chips  (tolerable)

Gimme Chips - WasabiIf you are looking for a more detailed description of who and what GimMe Chips are, then please see our original review of their Teriyaki flavored chips located right over here.

However, if you are simply looking for the quick and simple low down on these wasabi flavored seaweed rice chips, please continue reading.

Wasabi + seaweed + rice = winning flavor combination for a very long time.

However (you knew there was going to be a however), GimMe Chips wasabi flavored seaweed rice chips somehow in our opinion do not knock this one out of the park.

Plain and simple, the seaweed flavor is too prominent for our paletes, and dominates the usually powerful wasabi flavor.

It’s not that we don’t taste any wasabi, because we do; and it tastes like the same old burning nasal punch as it always does.  However, despite wasabi’s undeniably powerful presence, somehow the seaweed still steals the show (and like we’ve said before, we don’t love licking the bottom of the ocean!).

The chips themselves had a strong, hearty crunch, with a grainy mouth texture.

So, if you are a big fan of that seaweed ocean flavor, and you also like getting your sushi maki on, then you may very well like these chips and we suggest you give them a try for yourselves.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Chef’s Shoppe – Wasabi & Soy Popcorn

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Chef Shoppe - Wasabi SoyWhat do we have here?  Yep, that’s right, another unique, startling and lip-smacking flavor from everyone’s favorite Warrenville Popcorn Store – Chef’s Shoppe!  In case you are unfamiliar with this great specialty cooking and food store (which would mean you haven’t read our reviews for their other fantastic flavors – Sriracha-Cheese and Spicy Beer Cheese – shame on you!), this shop also makes some of the best popcorn around!!  Edwardsville is the third oldest city in the state of Illinois.  And although technically a city in southwestern Illinois, Edwardsville is considered a part of the greater metro area of St. Louis.  So, we’re not sure if Edwardsville citizens cheer for the Blackhawks or the Blues, but we’re guessing that regardless of sports team loyalty, all Edwardsville-ians love themselves some Chef’s Shoppe popcorn!

So, how did this gourmet kitchen store get into the popcorn game?  According to the Chef Shoppe legend, and we have no reason to question it:

In May 2012 the Chef’s Shoppe expanded again, taking over the 2,500 square foot space adjacent to the existing business and adding popcorn.  But they didn’t start small – offering over 70 flavors of popcorn every day, the Chef’s Shoppe entered the popcorn scene in a big way. Scott, having officially retired after 32 years with AT&T the year before, is the head “popologist”.  With the help of his merry band of popping and coating specialists they turn out hundreds of gallons of popcorn every week.  ALL are made fresh in house – ALL are available to taste before you buy – ALL are so delicious that picking just one is nearly impossible.

Right from the get go, a potent blast of wasabi sets the flavor tone for this lip-smacking popcorn.  That undeniable wasabi burn clears the nasal passageway, and then lingers there for a while.  Not really sure if we can actually pinpoint any soy in the mix, but then again it is sort of tough with the barrage of wasabi slapping taste buds around!  The real kicker, or curve ball, in this flavor combination is the inclusion of white cheddar cheese. This cheese powder adds a dynamic facet to the flavor that is really unlike anything we have tasted before.  It sort of smooths out, or mellows, the wasabi just a little bit, but still allows the green root to do its intended job.

Not sure if we have brought this up before, but we love the Chef’s Shoppe technique for applying seasoning. Somehow they are able to cake the popcorn kernels with an almost wet slathering of seasoning that delivers this richness to the popcorn that our mouths enjoy very much!

In the end it is probably fair to say that we appreciate this flavor more than we actually loved eating it. It is certainly not a flavor of popcorn that we would want to sit down and enjoy a big bowl, or even a bag of.  This wasabi & soy is meant to be sampled, and maybe grazed upon in passing, but not eaten by the handful.  Either way, count us impressed by Chef’s Shoppe once again!

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles – Exclusive Flavor Wasabi & Soy Sauce

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Pringles - Wasabi & Soy SaucePringles All New Wasabi & Soy Sauce crisps are a Walmart exclusive flavor!  That’s right, if you want to enjoy these tasty potato crisps you are going to have to either visit the goliath department store, or find someone to do your Wally World shopping for you!  In the name of chip reviewing, and being the professionals that we are, we packed our bags and traveled out to the Chicago suburbs in search of the new Japanese inspired Pringles.  Luckily for us, we spotted them at the first Walmart we visited, and popped the canister open even before reaching the registers!

As we sat down and began writing this review we got to thinking “when was our last review of a new flavor of Pringles?”  Turns out that it has been nearly 3 months since we reviewed any new Pringles!  THREE MONTHS!  While three months may not seem like that long of time to many of you, let us just tell you that in Pringles’ months we’re talking about a very long time between new reviews!!

We are very, very happy to report that Pringles Wasabi & Soy Sauce crisps are really, really SPOT ON!!  Seriously, we’ve tried quite a few different Wasabi flavored chips, and these taste as much like wasabi as anything we have tried.  We have not tasted very many Soy flavored chips, but we have of course splashed the salty gluten-ful condiment on many a grain of rice, and these crisps taste like they have been splashed as well!

As soon as we popped the top off of the canister, very prominent aromatic notes of soy sauce permeated the air even before we could poke our nose in for a whiff.  The lightly green dusted potato crisps deliver a wallop of dependable wasabi nasal heat that invades the entire mouth and nasal cavities.  Luckily, the punch dies off quickly, and allows our taste buds to mingle with the deliciously salty and unmistakeable flavor notes of soy sauce.  With each potato crisp we crunched, Pringles transported us to our local sushi joint where we often grace our favorite maki rolls with a little dab of green wasabi paste, and a quick dip into the small soy sauce cup.  A delicious combination, and Pringles has NAILED the flavor!  Bravo!!

Despite Pringles accurate flavor execution, the other half of this equation is whether or not these flavors work with Pringles potato crisps?  And, for the most part they do.  We would probably appreciate a thicker chip, with a bit more of its own flavor to combat the strong wasabi and soy flavors, but the Pringles potato crisps work adequately as a delivery canvas to showcase these flavors.

We really like these bold, lip-smacking new crisps from Pringles.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
