REVIEW: Better Made – Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Comments:

These are better made than some, but others have been made better than these…..

Better Made’s potato chips are simply great, consistently solid potato chips, again and again.  They are not too crunchy, good medium thickness, with a toothsome texture and some really tasty potato flavor.

These salt & vinegar chips definitely zingy vinegar to the party!  The seasoning is potent without being overbearing.  Perhaps a tad bit too salty, but we can give any chip that includes salt in the name of the flavor a little bit of leeway.  What we truly appreciate most about these chips is simply that they are not kettle cooked…..

“What?”  You may ask…..”Do you not like kettle cooked chips?”

And the answer to that is of course we like kettle cooked chips, but it just seems like there are far too many kettle cooked salt & vinegar chips out there, and not enough plain old salt & vinegar potato chips.  We like that these Better Made’s give us a break from the norm.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Old Dutch Crunch – Salt & Vinegar Kettle Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Comments:

These potato chips are…

Simply a classic, kettle cooked, salt & vinegar chip that we go back to again and again.  One, because we really enjoy eating them, and two, because they are really a proven, time tested, product that as far as we are concerned, is the best in their category (category being: kettle cooked, salt & vinegar potato chips. They aren’t necessarily our favorite salt & vinegar chips, or kettle cooked potato chips, but combined, best of their kind!).

First off, let us warn you that these salt & vinegar chips are not for the faint of tongue…..if you cannot handle sour very well you may want to steer clear of these chips.  Before even reaching your tongue, your nostrils will warn you of the nasal vinegar and acidic burn you are about to experience.  We guess the best way we can think of to describe the vinegar on these chips would be too call it spicy….in a hot, nasal, burn sort of way.  Each potato chip is evenly, and heavily, coated with a dense white powder.  Similar to Cheetos, we were licking the seasoning from our fingers after eating a few handfuls of these chips.

As with all of Old Dutch’s Dutch Crunch line of kettle cooked potato chips, these chips are semi-thick, sturdy and hearty.  Good thing too, because this flavor needs a strong crunch of chip that can balance out its powerful punch; any lesser chip would be overpowered for sure.

To conclude, we would simply like to mention that some of tasters felt that the Dutch Crunch potato chips tasted quite a bit like fast food french fries….YUM (and, specifically McDonald’s fries).

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Chip Review of the day…..

Tyrrell’s – Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar Hand Cooked English Crisps

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Comments:

For those of you unfamiliar with Tyrrell’s English Crisps, these wonderful potato chips (ahem…crisps) made their way to us, courtesy of our friends S & A, from across the big blue pond.  Chip Review is also happy to inform all of you that we recently learned that Tyrrell’s (the company) has made the decision to brave the long journey, make the jump, and test out the waters of our American chip market. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to their contribution to the greatest industry in the world!!

NOTE: As far as we can tell (and we’re self proclaimed experts on the subject…), there is no technical difference between an English potato crisp, and an American potato chip.  The only difference appears to be regional….and we all know that potato chips have no boundaries and taste great everywhere.

Tyrrell’s potato crisps were predominantly larger in size, and their shapes varied quite a bit, but each and every crisp had a light, earthy potato flavor.  We were not as thrilled with the potato crisps’ texture.  In our opinion their crunch was slightly of.  These dense, thinly cut crisps seemed like they had been triple dipped in the kettle oil, resulting in some heavy, tooth cracking crunching.

From the very first taste of these Sea Salt & Vinegar crisps we could tell these were not our typical run of the mill salt and vinegar chips.  Right off the bat we appreciated the uniqueness that the cider vinegar added to this classic flavor combination.  The cider vinegar somehow tastes “richer”, and simply has more depth and flavor than what we are used to.  These crisps did not try to zing us to death with the usual acidic tones.  Plus, the usage of sea salt really complimented the cider vinegar rather nicely.

When it comes down to it, what these crisps truly reminded us of was eating fresh cut french fries with malt vinegar.  We love to douse our fries (or chips) with malt vinegar whenever we get the chance….and wouldn’t you know it – the ingredients on these crisps include malt vinegar.  Yum.  These are great salt & vinegar chips!! (or crisps!).  For another great example of the classic U.K. flavor combination check out our review of Mackie’s of Scotland.

REVIEW: Deep River Snacks – Sea Salt & Vinegar Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Comments:

Just the other day we crunched an extremely tasty new flavor (at least to us) from Deep River Snacks (stay tuned for that review in the near future), however, these Sea Salt & Vinegar chips are not those chips…..

These Sea Salt & Vinegar chips are solid chips nonetheless.

Solid = great, clean potato flavor + modestly, tangy vinegar seasoning + pretty thick and extra crunchy kettle cooked potato chips.

Sounds like a pretty good recipe doesn’t it?  Well, it is a great recipe, and those are the correct ingredients, but to be completely honest, we weren’t wowed – we were just left pleasantly satisfied!!

Better than most, but not as good as the best.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.
