REVIEW: Rusty’s Chips Surf City Strips – Hand Made Corn Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Rusty's Chips - Surf City Strips Corn ChipsNot too very long ago we were fortunate enough to taste Rusty’s Original Island Potato Chips for the very first memorable time.  Before we had even finished our first handful of the fantastically fried thick potato slices we new without a doubt that we had just relished IOHP the best potato chips ever!  Period!!  Game over!!!  With that being said, we were both excited, and a little apprehensive to try Rusty’s version of America’s other favorite style of chip – corn tortilla.  On the one hand, we had plenty of faith in Rusty’s chip making abilities (for proof of that see our review of his potato chips), but on the other hand, corn tortilla chips are an entirely different beast than potato chips (and by beast, we of course mean starchy vegetable!), and anything is possible in the world of chips!

Once again we would like to begin with Rusty’s chip story:

Once upon a time, 1980, Rusty, while dreaming of far away places, came up with a plan to make Maui Potato Chips on the mainland. Six months later, Rusty was manufacturing Rusty’s Island Chips in his own little kitchen in Costa Mesa, Ca. His Maui recipe chips were selling like hot cakes in every gourmet market in Southern California. By 1990, Rusty’s Chips were in every major market as well. He was shipping chips to the east coast by the truck load and even to Hawaii.

Rusty’s little Maui chip company grew and grew. It got so big so fast that the stress was getting to Rusty, and he wasn’t surfing anymore. He did not have time to be on his sail boat. He wasn’t happy. So he let a big company swallow up his little company. Well the 1990’s came, and a lot of things did not survive the times and one was Rusty’s Maui Chips. The recipe was changed, the little kitchen turned into a factory, and the love for the best chips ever faded away…

Well, Rusty’s Back!!  He has his own chip kitchen in Huntington Beach and things could not be better….!!!

What do you do when you are not satisfied with your local tortilla chip selection?  Well, in the case of Rusty,  you simply use your magic chip creating abilities to come up with something that you do love!  Luckily for all of us, these chips just so happen to be something that we (and we’re guessing you) would love too!

Similar to his potato chips, Rusty’s chip strips are thick cut, we’re talking unusually thick cut, with a really hearty crunch.  These chips crunch even harder than his potato chips, and that’s saying something.  The shape of these chip strips are a bit unique, and it took us a couple of handfuls before we realized what exactly Rusty’s reasoning, or technique, behind this design really was.  After we noticed that a couple of the strips were sort of in the shape of a half moon (as opposed to all of the chips being uniform 3 inch by 1 inch strips) that it finally dawned on us that Rusty was simply using round corn tortillas, and cutting them into strips; resulting in some strips that were longer than others, and some strips that had one rounded edge and one straight flat edge!  Not that this technique really added very much to the chip eating experience, but we did sort of personally appreciate the chip variation as we worked our way through the bag.

Rusty’s corn masa flavor is pretty darn tasty, with an undeniable underlying level of sweetness.  The sweet note adds a layer of depth that really complimented the corn flavor.   The chips also had just the right level of salt.  All in all, simply very good tasting tortilla chips!  Were they as good as Rusty’s Potato Chips?  No, but for plain, salted, tortilla chips, they were a lip-smacking addition to the genre that we would be more than happy to crunch again!

REVIEW: The Original Charley’s Chips “Famous” Fresh Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

The Original Charley's ChipsThis bag had us asking questions right off the bat.  “Who is this Charley?”  “Are these chips really famous?”  “Thin…?”  They don’t look especially thin to us.  “Proudly Made – Local Products – Locally Produced”  Where are these chips from because we have never seen them before.  “Perfectly seasoned?”  Now that’s a bold statement, but not one that we will automatically dismiss based on the ample chip coverage we can see through the clear bag!

So, we began our Charley’s Chips question answering journey the same way we imagine every teenager doing a book report these days does – we got busy with the Google!  As it turns out, these chips, and their creator Jim Raredon, are from Wyoming, Michigan, and include quite a history / back story:

It took over 20 years to perfect his recipes and over 10 years to develop a seasoning that would stick to the chips…. The road to commercial success for Charley’s Chips has been an interesting, but bumpy one; a combination of luck, perseverance and legal wrangling coupled with more than a hint of whimsy.

“Who is Charley?” is a question asked a lot. Answer: There is no Charley.  Charley’s Pub and Grill, 1339 28th Street SW in Wyoming. “Charley” is a menu character created for Charley’s Pub and Grill, a restaurant that opened in 2011 at the Anazah Sands West pool hall at 1339 28th St. SW. On the original menu, Charley was a “hard-drinking womanizer” who died in a fire and haunted the building.  Owner Scott Wellman, a lawyer, hired Raredon to helm the kitchen at the restaurant.  Raredon introduced… a menu of full of gimmicky, yet popular items… One of those items was a simple, yet flavorful basket of tortilla chips and salsa.  Nearly every restaurant serves chips and salsa, but there was something special about the chips at Charley’s. As demand began to increase, staff found themselves Ziploc-bagging them for take-out sale.  Raredon, who was living in a house owned by Wellman near the restaurant, began to devote more and more time to production of the chips. The two men found a suitable building… and shifted production out of the restaurant.  (www.mlive.com)

There is a lot more to the Charley’s Chips story (so feel free to click on the mlive link above), but we think that gives you a good enough glimpse into the history of these “famous” chips.  We may have found Charley’s Chips at our local grocery store, but spotting them still reminds us of all of the times we’re traveling somewhere, and just happen to stumble upon some delicious, locally made, hidden gem!  Below is just too cool of picture not to post!  This looks like some place we will have to visit at least once in our lifetimes!!  We’ll pretend like we just happened upon it…  Like we smelled the fried chips in the air!!   (Add to bucket list now!)

Alright, enough jibber-jabber, what about Charley’s chips?!  What makes them so special??  Well, first of all, we are happy to report that Charley’s Chips are a delightful addition to the seasoned tortilla chip game (we must of course give thanks to Doritos for allowing others to play on their playground!!)!  When we first grabbed this bag from the grocery store shelf we simply assumed that the chips were coated with the same old, obligatory, dusting of some sort of mildly spicy, chile pepper powder.  To our surprise Charley’s Chips were coated with so much more!  A unique seasoning combination of garlic, onion, salt, some spices, and lots of sugar.  Charley’s seasoning reminded us a lot of a traditional seasoning salt that veered towards the sweeter end of the flavor spectrum.  The seasoning was unlike any combo that we had tried with tortilla chips before, and we’re happy to report that it complimented, and heightened, the natural corn flavors quite well.  We were impressed!  Speaking of those corn flavors, the tortilla chips themselves are very impressive.  We’re not quite sure if we agree with the thin description from the front of Charley’s bag; we would have called these medium thick, sturdy, yet crispy tortilla chips.  Rustic or hearty would be a good descriptor.  The tortilla chips, like we said, have a good amount of real corn flavor.  All in all, Charley’s Chips are solidly impressive!

So, if you, or we, ever find ourselves in Wyoming, Michigan, we should swing by The Chip Palace, say hey to Jim Raredon, and enjoy some super fresh, and lip-smacking, Charley’s Chips!  Just don’t expect to find Charley!!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

REVIEW: Beanfields – Barbecue Bean & Rice Chips

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Beanfield's - BarbecueAs some of you may know, we like our BBQ chips sort of like ourselves… not too sweet!  Just kidding, about us, not the chips!!

We have to say, overall we have been pretty darn impressed with Beanfield’s Bean & Rice Chips. We know what you are thinking, “sure Chip Review you are impressed with them for what they are, but compared to “regular” chips, they don’t really compare do they?!”  Sure, they are different, we recognize that, and comparing Beanfield’s to your typical tortilla chips is sort of like comparing apples to something even healthier than apples (is there such a thing?), but honestly that’s what we try to do here – compare chips to chips!  And these are lip-smacking chips regardless of type.

Beanfield’s bean and rice chips remind us a lot of other rice chips we’ve tried (like Riceworks), more than they do of other bean chips (like Beanitos).  Beanfield’s chips have a sort of rustic, hearty, toothsome, grainy consistency that provides a distinct texture and crunch.  Softer than your typical corn tortilla chips.  And the seasoning also adheres quite well to the rough texture.

Speaking of Beanfield’s barbecue seasoning blend, their recipe is bold, and packed with loads of flavor!  Not quite as uniquely delicious as their ranch or nacho cheese seasonings but still impressive nonetheless.  Probably what we appreciate so much regarding this seasoning is its overall balance and savoriness.  Like we said above, this is not a sweet bbq seasoning, it’s a bit tangy, a little smoky, and all savory!  The flavor combo just works well with Beanfield’s hearty chips!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Doritos JACKED 3D – Bacon Cheddar Ranch

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Doritos Jacked 3D - Bacon Cheddar RanchDear Doritos,

We know that we have been consistently complaining about your JACKED line of chips for…well…since their beginning.  But, the fact of the matter is that when we look back through our reviews of your JACKED chips we actually find an awful lot of good, and even great, chips distributed throughout the JACKED roster!  Which is why we offer you the following confession:

We here at Chip Review have told ourselves that we are not the hugest fans of the JACKED line from Doritos.  However, despite the fact that we may not agree with the decision to change Doritos’ classic, light and crispy, tortilla chip to a BIGGER & THICKER version, we do recognize the reasoning behind it.  We simply feel like the chips are too big, and their texture is so thick that they no longer encompass the same light and crispy Doritos we have all loved for so many years.  That being said, the JACKED chip texture is slowly growing on us (especially the new 3D version), and when combined with your delicious BOLDER seasoning, the results more often than not we must admit, are some pretty great tasting chips!

How many of you out there remember Doritos original 3D chips??  If you do not, then you are younger than us, and you make us feel old!  Stop that right now!!  3Ds were a great snack from the 90’s, that most of us here at Chip Review enjoyed many a time.  The originals were light as air, soft crisp, with a very thin shell, and hollow in the middle.  The 3Ds were much too easy to pop one by one, over and over, until the bottom of that bag appeared.  They were unlike any other chip available on the market, and it appears as though Doritos is going for the gold medal in chip creativity once again!

Just look at that glowing Triforce shaped medallion chip above!  Have you ever seen, or eaten, anything quite like that before?!  Well, we have not, and we’re guessing that you have not either.  We have heard the 3Ds described as an Illuminati Symbol, or Egyptian Hieroglyphic, or our personal favorite, as ancient currency, used to buy things from a Mayan vending machine…  Plain and simple, these are some uniquely weird shaped chips no matter how you describe them!  Doritos you have wowed us again!

While technically speaking every Dorito that we have ever tasted has been of the three dimensional shape, these 3Ds do provide even more dimensional depth than any other Doritos, JACKED or otherwise, chips that came before!  For a second here let’s focus on what the heck these structures are…  This is 2015, and apparently, no longer will a thin-shelled, puffed, three dimensional Dorito from the past do the necessary snack trick.  Instead, Doritos top engineers have obliterated whatever drawing board they may have ever used, and veered towards ingenious structural JACKED creativity!!  These chips are cool!  These chips are originals!!  These chips are, not really even chips any longer!!!  The 3Ds are much more like Fritos corn chips in both flavor (corn-ful), and texture (dense crunch).  Albeit, corn chips that have been stacked and fused together to form a crunchy corn triangular pendant.  Do we love the shape?  Not really, but our mouths apparently do!  Because no matter how hard we tried, we could not stop ourselves from devouring them, one after one, until there were no more!

As for the scrumptuously sounding Bacon Cheddar Ranch seasoning… Well, these were not a hit.  A let down in fact.  We were certainly not as impressed with the BCRs as we were with the first JACKED 3D flavor – Jalapeño Pepper Jack.  Plain and simple, this is just a super mild Doritos flavor.  And mild and Doritos are two words that just don’t work together.    A little salty cheddar sprinkling here, a touch of fake smoke bacon there, and an unrecognizable (Cool) ranch do not work well together; especially when paired with the hearty, corn-ful 3D chips!  We wanted or expected more.  NO! We needed more!

Well, there you have it.  Anyone else out there tried them yet?  Thoughts?  As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

Rating: ©-1/2 chips  (return to sender)

Beanfields - Unsalted

Beanfields makes some really decent bean & rice chips, but these ones, well these aren’t among them!  Seriously, we are nearly 100% sure that somewhere within the definition of CHIPS is the word salt!!
