Popchips’ new line of popped tortilla chips are not the first of their kind, they were beaten to the punch months ago by these chips. But just like with Poptillas, as far as we’re concerned Popchips, we would be just fine without…..
As a whole, we have not enjoyed very much of what we have tried in this popped chip market. We totally get it though, these popped chips are a healthier (less fat, less calories = less flavor…), crunchy snack option for people who are into that thing, or probably more importantly, need that thing.
These chips remind us quite a bit of the now debunk Doritos Baked! Cool Ranch! Tortilla Chips crossed with Bugles, except that Doritos’ ranch seasoning is one of a kind, and as far as we can tell, cannot be replicated….
The seasoning is very powdery, and doesn’t seem to blossom with the popped tortilla chips very well. All of the usual ranch suspects are present – garlic, buttermilk, onion, herbs, a little heat, and something sweet…. – but for some reason the ratio / combination just doesn’t do it for us. And as for the popped tortilla chips, we do appreciate how natural and corn-y (hahaha) they taste, but as with most popped chips, we just don’t love the light, puffy texture, and our mouths are pleading with us for some fat content to satisfy their cravings!!
