Chip Trip down memory lane…..

Just the other day while perusing our local chip aisle Chip Review decided to pick up a bag of these classic Ruffles – Cheddar & Sour Cream Potato Chips.  These were the first Sour Cream & Cheddar combination flavored chips Chip Review ever tried, and as far as we know, Ruffles were the first ones to ever attempt this flavor combination (this information hasn’t been verified yet, so don’t quote us)!!!  Either way, these are the originals to us, and as far as we’re concerned, currently the best ones available to us today*!!

Review forthcoming……but just to let you know, these originators are definitely lip-smacking!

*stay tuned to find out what other brand’s Sour Cream & Cheddar chips beats out these chips on Chip Review’s Top 5 – Sour Cream & Cheddar Chips of All-Time!  The list is coming soon….

Chip Review of the day…..

Doritos – Sour Cream & Onion

Comments:

We figured that since Doritos has decided to re-re-release their Sour Cream & Onion chips, that we better re-taste, and re-review them. Well, not much has changed here, we are still not big fans of these chips.  In our humble opinion, these are one of Doritos weakest efforts.

There are certain flavors that are destined to go with certain chips.  Nacho Cheese flavor + corn tortilla chips = Nachos.  Obvious right?  Ketchup flavor + potato chips = fries with ketchup.  Works right?  Well, Sour Cream & Onion happens to be one of those flavors that only works with a certain type of chip.  Can you guess what that type is?  Who doesn’t love the sour cream and onion combination on their potatoes?  Anyone?

Well, Doritos thought it would be fun to mess with ‘Chip Basics 101 – Balance of flavors & chips’.  And guess what?  It does not work.  Sour Cream & Onion flavor does not jive well with tortilla chips.  We normally love this flavor, and love Doritos tortilla chips, but together, not so much.  While the seasoning appearance on these chips reminds us of Cool Ranch Doritos, and if we had to describe this flavor, we may even compare it to Cool Ranch, but where as that flavor is an amazing classic, these Sour Cream & Onion chips fall flat.  These chips have no conviction.  No wow.  We associate Doritos with FLAVOR – loads of seasoning, and robust, in your face seasoning.  We get none of that from these, and in the end, we are disappointed.

These are one of the few Doritos we are just fine with them pulling from the shelves after its limited engagement is up – AGAIN!!!!!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree / Disagree?  Either way, let us know.

REVIEW: Stacy’s Pita Crisps – Perfectly Thymed (creamy mix of garlic and fine herbs)

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Comments:

If we are being completely honest here (and we like to think we are with our chip friends), Chip Review has never really given pita chips their fair share of attention within the chip industry.  Thinking back, we’ve maybe tried a handful of pita snacks among our 1000+ chips we’ve enjoyed.  Why, you may ask?  We aren’t quite sure.  Based on this most recent venture, we really have no clue.

Stacy’s is one of the big dogs in the pita snack industry.  We’ve seen her name around for quite some time, and it seems like Stacy’s pretty much sticks to what they know.  According to Stacy’s website, the company got its start “from a little sandwich cart in downtown Boston, Stacy sold all natural sandwiches made with real pita bread.  Pretty soon customers were lining up and down the block.  So to give those loyal fans something to nibble on, she baked up tasty seasoned pita chips”.

According to our records, it appears that we haven’t tried any of Stacy’s other pita snacks.  But we do agree with everything Junk Food Guy’s recent assessment says about these tasty crisps.  They are light and crunchy, packed with a perfect mélange of flavors that blend seamlessly, and yet can be identified individually as well.  If this is the type of quality we have been missing out on all these years, you can consider us members of the pita team starting Right Now!

REVIEW: Route 11 – Sour Cream & Chive Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Comments:

Chip Review doesn’t have much to say about these chips.  We think they are perfectly adequate.  They neither under or over-whelmed us.  Would we eat them again?  Of course, but we wouldn’t ever go searching them out.  There are far superior Sour Cream & Onion Chips on the market that we plan on filling our stomachs’ with.

We do have to praise Route 11’s bag design again.  Great use of color and creative eye catching design, make these bags some of our favorites on the market.  We also must stress again, the fact that these chips are very thick and crunchy; yet, not classified as kettle cooked.  Flavor wise, we found the sour cream and onion seasoning pretty ordinary, but, with a nice subtle addition of chives in the background.
