REVIEW: Herr’s – Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Comments:

These are definitely the most flavorful and tasty jalapeno chips that Chip Review has tasted since we tasted Laurel Hill’s Jalapeno Chips (which we consider to be the very best out there).   Herr’s crunchy, kettle cooked chips have a wonderfully scrumptious combination of flavors coating them.  Included in the ingredients of these chips are: spices (we assume this includes jalapeno…), onion, garlic, sugar, along with some green bell pepper (to further emphasize the pepper flavor we assume).  These chips left us with a modestly convincing lingering of heat afterwards.

These chips were colorfully coated with both red and green specs.  The potato chips themselves were larger, crunchy, kettle cooked with only a little bit of potato flavor able to shine through…but with seasoning that good, we can live without loads of potato flavor.

To put it simply, these are what we expect when we eat jalapeno flavored chips.  Why can’t all brands put out such quality products?

Like we said earlier, these are some of the best jalapeno chips we’ve tasted lately…..in fact, stay tuned because these just might actually be some of the best jalapeno chips we can ever remember tasting.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

Chip Review of the day…..

Joe Chips – Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips  (notable)

Comments:

Joe Chip’s Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Potato Chips have quite a bit more heat than the majority of jalapeno flavored chips we’ve tried.  A lot of chips claim to be bringing the heat, but rarely succeed in doing so.  However, the heat in these chips became increasingly evident across our lips after putting the bag down and pausing for a second.  The heat was definitely from the inclusion of chili peppers on these chips – the flavoring reminded us more of chili pepper powder than specifically jalapeno peppers.  In fact, with these chips we did not notice any green specs of color at all, only small red specs.

We’ve mentioned this before how it seems like many chip companies will purposely color their jalapeno chips red…?  Possibly to convey spiciness, or maybe just add additional seasoning from a red colored ingredient such as paprika, etc.  However, with these chips, Joe Chips aren’t necessarily red in color, but they do have small red specs all over them….interesting, to say the least.

The potato chips themselves were a bit stale and definitely not the crunchiest chip in the kettle (get it?).  They did have a nice potato flavor, but this was difficult to detect after a while from all of the heat permeating throughout our mouths, along with the annoyance of the stale chips.

Chip Review has appreciated the effort put forth into each of the funny quips on the back of Joe Chip’s bags, but we have to admit that we forgot to take a look at the one for these chips – so if anyone happens to know what the story for these chips is, we’d love to hear it.  We’re guessing Joe would have told us we were about to try some spicy chips….and he would have been right!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Door County – Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Comments:

Is it just us, or does it seem like just about every other chip review we do these days is spicy in one way or another…..?  Jalapeno-Habanero this, and Sweet-Chile-Heat that, and Spicy-Flamin’-Caliente…..  There is definitely a trend going on right now in the chip market, and it’s making us sweaty, thirsty and hungry!!

These jalapeno chips are from a company called Door County, named after, and located on, a peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan on the Eastern most side of Wisconsin.  These chips did not have a very strong jalapeno scent or flavor, and we felt only the slightest bit of spicy heat present after eating the entire bag.  The seasoning reminded us more of a creamy buttermilk and onion flavor (actually quite tasty), but definitely not very jalapeno-y or spicy. There were some green specs sporadically covering the chips, but that definitely could be from the inclusion of parsley in the ingredient, and not necessarily the jalapeno – since we don’t taste much of the chili pepper.  We’re fairly certain that anyone who bit into these chips without knowing what flavor they were supposedly eating, would think they were eating some type of sour cream or onion chips, not jalapeno flavored chips.

The potato chips themselves were pretty tasty, with slightly brown edges and a certain depth to their crunch and flavor.  These chips are on the thicker side and very crunchy – textbook kettle cooked chips.

These are pretty good flavored potato chips, but only OK jalapeno chips….

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Let us know.
