Wai Lana - Barbeque Cassava Chips

Comments:

All right, now we have officially seen it all.  The chip industry, will never be the same.  It is one thing for a rap or country star to endorse some chips, and it’s no big deal for a race car driver or comedian to have their own line of chips, but when a globally renowned yoga guru decides to release her own line of chips, we just can’t believe it?!?

Apparently, according to Wai Lana’s website bio page, “it would be difficult, if not impossible, to find anyone as influential as Wai Lana in bringing yoga to the mainstream. Her internationally aired TV series continues to attract a huge audience and has played a key role in yoga’s skyrocketing popularity. Famous for making it easy and effective, Wai Lana excels at making the ancient art of yoga a life-enhancing experience for anyone who practices along with her.” (www.wailana.com).

To be completely honest, prior to these chips, we had never heard of Wai Lana, and her ginormous yoga brand, but as you all know, our hobbies consist of eating and writing about chips, followed closely with pumping iron and running miles, but not yoga.  However, with the release of these Barbeque Cassava Chips, Wai Lana is trying to bring the two disconnected interests closer together.  Do the two belong together?  Not this time!!

According to Wikipedia “Cassava is the third most important source of calories in the tropics, after rice and maize.”  In other words, cassava are more popular than potatoes in many parts of the world.  Wonder why we don’t see more cassava chips then?  Wai Lana’s cassava chips are not like traditional cassava or potato chips that are simply fried and sliced cross sections of a cassava.  Instead, Wai Lana has opted for the lighter and healthier popped version of the chip.  How this popping of the chip is executed is still beyond us?  What it does texturally to the chip is expand and puff its body, making the chip lighter, and more airy, and we think more crispy and crunchy.  We don’t necessarily love the chips’ texture, but they were easy to eat, and would make a perfectly acceptable vehicle for delivering loads of flavor into our mouths….if, that was the case, but sadly it is not.

Right away, the first thing we notice is that these chips are very, very fragrant, and they smell like some uniquely familiar combination of herbs and spices, that definitely DO NOT remind us of any barbeque we are familiar with.  Flavor wise however, they are very mild.  A subtle taste of spices simply tickled the backs of our throats, but nothing really ever hit our tongues.  Does barbeque in Hawaii mean something different???  We don’t taste any of the usual suspects….no tomato, no brown sugar, no vinegar, no mustard, no chile flake, no, no, no.  Instead we taste (smell – more precisely) notes of curry, turmeric, and many other seasonings that we associate with Indian food – not BBQ.

Sorry, these just didn’t work for us.  They were deceiving, and poorly executed.  Luckily, we are not going to have to worry about getting in a bunch of yoga and burning off very many calories, mainly because we didn’t eat very many of them!

As always we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree. Let us know.

REVIEW: Pringles – Sriracha Asian Chili Sauce

Pringles - Sriracha Asian Chili Sauce

Comments:

Pringles just seems to be on a roll as of late.  We can’t review them fast enough, and we can’t seem to praise them high enough either!!

It’s always fun looking back on our many ratings and reviews of Pringles from over the years.  It is more than apparent that we have enjoyed a roller coaster of reactions along the way.  While we have praised Pringles and their ability to continually produce new, and sometimes unique, flavors.  We have wasted more than our fair share of time, and mouth space, on plenty of regurgitated flavors!  Luckily for us, with their latest flavor, Pringles continues their lip-smacking streak, and joins the (apparently) trendy Sriracha Asian Chili Sauce party that began with last year’s Lay’s ‘Do Us a Flavor’ finalist.

Raise of hands, how many of you out there knew that Sriracha was pronounced nothing like it is spelled? Apparently, Sriracha is NOT pronounced like it is spelled.  SI-racha, not SREE-racha.  According to Wikipedia, “It is named after the coastal city of Si Racha, in the Chonburi Prvince of Eastern Thailand.”  Which is of course all fine and dandy, but why the additional ‘R”??  It makes no sense!  We like pronouncing Sriracha correctly, about as much as we like the pronunciation of a certain retired Green Bay Packer QB!!  Sorry Brett Favre, it is FAV-RE, not FARVE!!

We are huge fans of Huy Fong’s Sriracha Chili Sauce.  That unmistakable green capped, rooster gracing, electric red hot sauce filled, clear bottle always brings a smile to our faces.  While it may not necessarily be our absolute favorite hot sauce, it is definitely up there in the top three, and we probably would consider it the most versatile of any of them.  We use it with everything.  We use it in soups, on grilled meats, in sauces, on eggs of any type, and even on peanut butter toast (thank you Bon Appetit! – And, don’t you knock it until you try it!!).  All that being said, we are very happy to report that Pringles has absolutely nailed the flavor – spot on!

Zippy and spicy, tongue tingling, Thai chili flavor, combined with a very generous dosage of powerful garlic, and rounded out with a heavy splash of nose burning vinegar!  These are tasty, tasty potato crisps.  The heat definitely does not last as long as the real hot sauce, but for a few moments, they do pack a punch.

Plain and simple, these are the best Sriracha flavored chips / crisps that we have tried so far.  Granted we haven’t tried them all yet, there is still one illusive brand out there that hasn’t seemed to hit our local Chicago area shelves quite yet.  But for the time being, we can say with utmost certainty that these are the best that we have tasted!  Keep up the fine work Pringles!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Bret’s – Chevre Goat Cheese & Espelette Pepper Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Bret's - Goat Cheese & Espellete Pepper

Comments:

Holy goat cheese chip man!!!!  First off, lets just say that we have never heard of goat cheese being used to flavor chips before.  Anyone?  Is this common in France (where these chips are from). Secondly, when we saw that goat cheese was being used, we never thought that the chips would taste so much like goat cheese – but they do, they really, really do!

Cheese is probably the most common, and most popular, chip flavoring in the United States.  We love our nacho cheese tortilla chips, and our cheese doodles, and puffs.  Of course, we have had, and reviewed, many cheese flavored chips over the years; including (but not limited to): asiago, mozzarella, bleu, pepper jack, parmesan, and of course cheddar, but never, ever, have we had the pleasure of trying goat cheese on chips – until now!

For any of you out there unfamiliar with the goat cheese we would describe it as a slightly sour, or tart flavored cheese.  The cheese exudes a distinct, natural, gamey note that immediately lets you know that you are not tasting your normal salty cheddar cheese.

Combined with the goat cheese, Bret’s has decided to match the Espelette pepper to help counterbalance the richness.  What exactly is an Espelette pepper?  Don’t ask us.  Could it be a pepper that we know as a different name?  Or, is it just a pepper we are not familiar with around these parts??

According to Wikipedia, “the Espelette pepper is a variety of chili pepper that is cultivated in the French Commune of Espelette” (Wikipedia).  Well, that’s a simple enough definition.  The pepper can be seen visually, sprinkled all over these chips.  It looks as though the chips have been dusted with red chili flakes. At first you don’t think that you taste much of the pepper, but once your palette adjusts to the funk that is the goat cheese, then your throat reminds you that YES these chips do also have a touch of some heat!  For reference, on average, the Espelette pepper would be considered approx. half as hot as a jalapeno.

The cheese and pepper flavor combination works really well, with the funky goat cheese playing off of the Espelette pepper spice very nicely.  Our only complaint would be that the chips do get a bit heavy after a few handfuls.  We would definitely classify them a sit-back-and-enjoy-slowly-in-moderation type of chip, rather than a see-how-many-you-can-cram-down-your-chip-hole, kind of chip.  If only they had a tiny bit of acid, or something, cutting the richness level, then we could devour them!

Bret’s potato chips are very narrow rippled, about medium thin thickness, nice grease level, and overall, lightly salted.  We love that Bret’s is pushing the chip flavor boundaries, and we can’t wait to taste the two other flavors we currently have – Indian Curry, and Carbonara!!!

These are our thoughts, agree or disagree, make sure to let us know!

REVIEW: Doritos – Salsa Verde!

Rating: ©©©©© chips  (“A” list)

Doritos Salsa Verde

Comments:

These are the Doritos, that took Doritos, from Doritos, to DORITOS, for each and every one of us here at Chip Review!!!  The best Doritos ever, bar none, we’re not arguing here, no discussion, period, double-stamp!

For the longest time these chips were THE chips for Chip Review.  They were our go to. They were our favorites. Numero uno, without a doubt.  They were the single most daring, original and challenging Doritos flavor to ever grace this chip-filled earth.  Anyone, and everyone, who ever gave these chips a taste, immediately knew that they were tasting something a bit…..different! A bit………..better, than all the rest!

And so, just as quickly as they appeared into our chip filled lives, and changed them forever, they were gone again.  They completely vanished from every shelf, everywhere!  Alarms were sounded!  Moms were called!!  How could Doritos do this to us?!?  The people (being us) were not going to stand for this.  Luckily, we didn’t have to, and Doritos heard our cries and returned Salsa Verde! to our lives only a short time later.  However, this disappearing act has become some sort of torture, or powerful control, that Doritos simply loves to exude over us every so often.  One day we will be taking our usual stroll through the greatest aisle on earth, and we will happily observe those easily identifiable, lovely bright green Doritos bags; and then the next day vamoose – nowhere to be found!!  Doritos will, for one reason or another, keep their greatest chips from us for weeks, months, and sometimes what seems like even years.  But, once again, Salsa Verde’s hiatus does not last, and suddenly there they are, standing there, shining brighter than all of the other Doritos bags!

To accurately try and describe the flavor profile of the Salsa Verde tortilla chips, seems an impossible feat.  But, that is what we do, and thus we shall try.  To start, they are all at once spicy, earthy, salty, vegetal, fresh, tangy, complex, and powerful, yet subtle, and simple!  They ignite each of our senses, and all of our taste buds!  Honestly, they really do taste like they have been sprinkled with a deliciously fresh and spicy, green tomatillo and jalapeno, salsa powder.  As we glance through the ingredients list we notice a few surprising, and noteworthy ingredients, that are probably worth mentioning.  First off, there is natural chicken flavor?!  We assume to add some sort of depth and richness.  Next, there are not only spices, but spice extractives.  Which we take to mean that Doritos isn’t messing around here!  Finally, there are parsley and lemon juice; both adding that touch of freshness we mentioned above.  Put everything together, and you have an unbeatable flavor bonanza!

Obviously, over the years we have found plenty of other chips that have wowed us, and even garnered our highest praise and rating – the coveted: “A” list endorsement!!  Whether or not any of these other amazing chips are actually better than Doritos Salsa Verde chips is its own argument, but we like to think that at any moment in time, depending on our moods, or the weather, our all-time favorite chips could be anyone of our “A” listers….and, we’re just happy that when we are in the mood for Doritos Salsa Verde, that we can actually find them on our local grocery store shelves!!

Do yourselves a huge favor and grab these chips whenever you happen to spot them!!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.
