BIJOU-REVIEW: Herr’s – Peppered Bacon Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Herr's - Peppered BaconWhen we snagged these chips from our local Walmart store we thought that they must be brand new!!  Turns out, Taquitos.net had reviewed them months back.

Seems like no matter how many times we try another poorly executed bacon flavored snack, we still get excited for the next one!!

Initial thought upon opening the bag was that these chips have a very potent smoky aroma.  Thoughts of bacon?  A little bit.

Taquitos.net wasn’t kidding when they mentioned that these chips are covered in dark blotches.  Are these old potatoes?  Stained potatoes?  Maybe it is just the super finely ground black pepper not distributed evenly?!?

Standard Herr’s extra wide rippled larger potato chips.  Good crisp potato chips.
These are pretty tasty chips, but calling them peppered bacon may be a stretch!  Only a very faint, fine grind, black pepper dusting, combined with a semi-faint smokey bacon flavor.  Neither flavor is very commanding, but the combination of the two, plus whatever other ingredients they’ve got going on, forms to create one delicious flavor!

RATING: Cobs – Lightly Salted, Slightly Sweet

Cob's - Slightly Sweet Slightly Salty

We really would have appreciated a heavier hand with the salt.  Still the same great Cobs popcorn, but all we could really taste was the sweet.

REVIEW: Keogh’s – Atlantic Sea Salt & Irish Cider Vinegar Potato Crisps

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips (lip-smacking)

Keogh's - Salt & VinegarFIELD: Abbeyville

VARIETY: Lady Claire

COOKED BY: Gregor

We have never seen this before, at least we don’t think we have??  Plus, we didn’t notice it on the first bag of Keogh’s delicious Shamrock and Sour Cream Crisps we tried earlier this year, but apparently on each bag of Keogh’s Potato Crisps they inform us of where the potatoes we are crunching on were grown, what variety they are, and even who cooked them for us!  If that isn’t attention to detail, and just plain old cute, we don’t know what is.

For those of you who by chance did not read our first review, here is a little back story on this wonderful potato crisp company:

Keogh’s Farm is a family owned and run potato growing and crisping business based in North County Dublin, an area famous for producing Ireland’s finest potatoes.  Keogh’s has been farming the rich fertile lands in this area for over 200 years and have recently set up a “crisping house” on the farm…now producing Ireland’s only “hand cooked on the farm” artisan potato crisps.

Launched in 2012 to celebrate St Patricks Day, Keogh’s Shamrock and Sour Cream potato crisps combine the delicious tangy taste of Sour Cream with the freshness of traditional Irish Shamrock. Our Shamrock is grown in Ballinskelligs Co. Kerry by Livingshamrock. This area also produces the fresh Irish Shamrock which is presented to the American president on St Patrick’s Day! www.keoghs.ie

These are delicious salt & vinegar chips, sorry crisps.  But, they are very different from what we typically know and recognize as salt & vinegar flavored chips here in the U.S.  Here in the states, chips companies seem to usually go with the shock value vinegar flavor, over any attempt at giving us true vinegar flavor.  They like to slap our taste buds right across their flavor cheeks with a tongue tingling citric acid sour bang-bang-boom-pow!  All that being said, this country’s chip consumers must love it, because those companies just keep seasoning those salt & vinegar chips the same way!  Or, is it that they simply know nothing else?!  Have they never tasted salt & vinegar chips that actually taste like real vinegar?

Either way, let us get back to the point.  Keogh’s Atlantic Sea Salt & Irish Cider Vinegar Potato Crisps taste like they have been dipped in rich and tangy vinegar, and would be a great example to try for anyone who has never tasted vinegar chips that actually taste like vinegar!

Here’s an observation….salt and vinegar chips from other countries (countries other than the USA), tend to lean on a sweeter, tangy vinegar flavor than our country.  The good ole U.S. of A. likes to slap our taste buds right across the cheeks with a tangy-sour bang-bang, boom-pow!! Chips made in the U.S. like to use sooooo much acid that our tongues feel abused afterwards!!  Keogh’s seasoning is fantastic!  It encompasses a certain richness, a funk, a level of real sweet and tangy vinegar flavor that just tastes authentic, and delivers none of that acidic, tongue numbing!  Apparently, this delicious seasoning was developed by using dried cider vinegar, dried malt vinegar, and dried malt vinegar!! Three types of REAL vinegar – dried – meaning condensed and enhanced, and then sprinkled all over the tasty potato crisps!

Speaking of Keogh’s potato crisps… they are nothing short of lip-smacking themselves!  Varying sizes of rustic, skin on, bright yellow hued fried potato slices!  Medium thick, with good potato flavor, and a crispy kettle cooked consistency!  Maybe a little greasy, but nothing that hinders their clean and neutral flavor!  We would welcome these fantastic Irish crisps anytime stateside!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think. Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Skinnygirl – Caramelized Onion Baked Pretzel Thins

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Skinnygirl - Caramelized Onion Pretzel ThinsSkinnygirl’s Baked Pretzel Thins take an obvious cue from the big boys of the pretzel market – Pretzel Crisps.

Thinn-ish, with a sturdy crunch, pretzel sort of “chips”.  They sort of look like bagel chips.

The baked thins encompass a good level of pure pretzel flavor, with a bit of a bread-y texture, that can distract a little bit, but luckily Skinnygirl’s delicious seasoning prevails.

The caramelized onion seasoning has a deliciously robust flavor profile.  We could definitely taste the sweet toasted onion notes, but there was also a decent level of garlic thrown in there.  So, just in case you were having any thoughts about doing any smooching after eating these, we would tell you to refrain!

Plain and simple this seasoning was lip-smackingly delicious, and worked very well with the pretzel thins.  We could crunch these all day!!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

BIJOU-REVIEW: Vic’s Corn Popper – All Natural Lite White Popcorn

Rating: ©©©© chips  (lip-smacking)

Vic's - LiteFresh, lite, almost delicate, and crispy!  That pretty much sums it up for Vic’s Lite White Popcorn.  Seriously though, this is some of the freshest tasting popcorn we have ever had out of a packaged bag – yum!

Each small, bright white kernel was perfectly coated with a subtle amount of salt.  Just enough of the simple snow white seasoning to really enhance the popcorn’s true corn flavors!  Actually, the more we ate, the more we noticed that our lips were feeling a little bit of that classic salt chapping you get from the saltiest of snacks.

Just the lightest amount of oil is noticeable, giving the popcorn a touch of delicious fat.

This popcorn is really, really easy to eat, and eat, and eat…until there is no more to eat!

Want to know a little secret we learned back in the day from a true popcorn lover, and aficionado – the one, the only, amazing Grandpa Bill?  Well, if you want to make your popcorn taste even better, even more flavorful, and salty, and somehow even more fresh, then throw the bag of popcorn in the freezer before eating it.  Somehow cooling the popcorn sort of intensifies all of the delicious flavors and turns a good popcorn great!!

BIJOU-REVIEW: Engine Co. 51 – Hot Curls

Rating: ©©© chips  (notable)

Engine Co 51 - Hot CurlsWe are always excited to see any new addition to the spicy-flamin’-hot curls family!  And, we were especially looking forward to crunching Engine Co. 51’s variation after loving their Hot Popcorn , and after reading Taquitos’ glowing review.

Unfortunately, neither of those precursors ended up being a good indication of the quality of these Hot Curls!  We simply did not love them.

Appearance wise, Engine Co. 51’s curls looked just like any other spicy curl.

The curls’ mouth texture was dense, with an almost stale chew to them.  We would have liked a lot fresher crispy crunch.

As for the bright red seasoning that liberally coated each curl, well, it brought none of the usual tangy, mouth burning heat that we’ve come to love.  And we would have hoped that if the “hot” curls weren’t bringing the spicy pain they would have at least been flavorful but they also weren’t even that cheesy.  Just a couple of notes of garlic and salt.

Not Engine Co. 51’s best showing!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Manomasa – Green Lemon & Pink Peppercorn Tortilla Chips

Rating: ©©©©-3/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

Manomasa - Green Lemon & Pink PeppercornTORTILLAS WITH SPIRIT

Manomasa nailed it with that statement!  In fact, we’d go even further and say Tortillas with Spirit and –  Vision, Execution and Creativity!! Wow, these are some of the most unique, and delicious tortilla chips that we have tried in a while!

A little while ago we were lucky enough to be introduced to this fantastic U.K. brand of chips via a glowing review we read on Crisp Nation (Josh – we owe you for this one!).

We had originally thought that the Manomasa name was a witty word play calling themselves the MAN o(f) MASA; but after a little digging we found that the name is actually a combination of two spanish words: MANO (of the hand), and MASA (corn).  The clever name combo fits perfectly as each one of their different flavors is delivered on a different style (or ‘recipe’ as they call it) of corn chip!  Brilliant!!

First up: Green Lemon & Pink Peppercorn.  That’s right, GREEN LEMON & PINK PEPPERCORN!  Green Lemon?  What’s that??  Are we are having flashbacks to when we were in Chile, and and it seemed like there was no way to differentiate between lemons and limes?!  They just called everything limons!  We actually assume that by green lemon Manomasa is most likely referring to unripened lemons.  And what would green lemons taste like?  Would they be more sour?  More bitter?  We are not sure, but clever marketing either way, and we’ll just crunch along.

These chips bring some serious lemon flavor.  Not necessarily lip puckering, but just loads of those deliciously fruity, aidic, citrusy lemon notes!  Far and away the lemon is the star of the show here but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a good supporting cast of other flavors as well.  The pink peppercorns are of course the next predominant flavor.  Providing just enough of that semi-spicy throat tickle, along with those elegant fruity-floral aromatic notes that only PINK peppercorns can provide. The lemon with the peppercorn sort of reminded us of that classic seasoning combination that we’re sure you all have somewhere in your spice cabinet – lemon pepper!  You know, that seasoning that you use a ton of to try and cover up for your dry chicken?!  Throw in a couple more of the usual ingredient characters like onion and garlic, and it looks like even some vinegar, and these tortilla chips provided a pretty delicious flavor party!

The Green Lemon & Pink Peppercorn seasoning utilized Manomasa’s Recipe No. 86: The Tostada, as their chip of choice!   According to the back of the bag the tostada SHAPE: named in homage to the original MEXICAN TOSTADA – the large circular tortilla that’s toasted and then enjoyed with fresh, tasty toppings.  The shape served its purpose just fine.  The chips themselves were light and crispy, and we didn’t know it at first, but apparently they also incorporated a medley of beans into the recipe; most likely to provide some additional textural variance, along with all of the additional health benefits of course.

Bravo Manomasa!  You really impressed us, and we can’t wait to try the next flavor and tortilla recipe!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.
