REVIEW: Kettle Brand – Salsa with Mesquite Potato Chips (Limited Batch, 30 Years)

Salsa with Mesquite?  Well, that’s sure a unique sounding flavor combination, and as far as we know, the only one of its kind.  Funny thing is, we were rummaging through our chip photo database, and turns out back in 2005 (during these chip’s original market run, we took the above photo), we actually tasted them….

….why we don’t remember tasting them, is beyond us, because these chips are fantastic!!!

So, we’re going to just forget the fact that we tried them years ago, and pretend that these are new chips to us.

Everything is so completely balanced with these chips.  The combination of ingredients is in such harmony that we can’t really seem to pin point any one ingredient.  The flavor blend reminds us of fresh tomatoes, bell peppers, onion, and garlic (all the usual salsa suspects), but then there is just a bit of heat, and smoke at the finish.  Probably our most favorite aspect of these chips is the tangy, acidic, sour tomato flavor, very unusual (kind of like a salt & vinegar & tomato chip), either way, it works with good potato chips.

Kettle Brand’ kettle cooked potato chips really are in a league of their own.  They must put a lot of effort into keeping their chip slice’s structural identities so round and uniform.  Unlike a lot of other kettle chips (Rachel’s, Dutch Crunch, Krunchers, etc) Kettle Brand does not let their kettle chips decide for themselves to shrivel up into tight little bunches, for the most part their chips are ‘chip’ shaped.  And we just love the way so much of the seasoning soaks into the chips, as opposed to other brands where the seasoning is simply clinging on to the chip for dear life…

These were so eatable, we had nearly finished the bag before we started formulating thoughts that we could jot down……

Stay tuned for reviews of Kettle Brand’s other two ‘Limited Batch’ flavors: Jalapeno Jack, and Red Chili, coming soon!  If these two flavors are half as good as the first two, we’ll be happy chippers!!

As always we would love to hear what you think.  Let us know.
