REVIEW: Rusty’s Island Chips – Potato Chips

Rating: ©©©©© chips  (“A” list)

Rusty's - Island ChipsIt’s true.  We can’t deny it.  Here at Chip Review we do not review very many “plain” or “original” or “regular” or whatever you wish to call them – good old potato chips.  It’s a fact, check the stats.  We do not have a definitive answer as to why this is, but in the back of our minds we sort of feel like most “regular” potato chips are too much the same to warrant writing a review about them.  That, and would there even be enough to write about?  Plus, our palettes usually prefer the punch and flavor difference that seasoning or flavoring adds.  But… BUT!!  Every once in a while we cross paths with some chips that astound us, amaze us, and force us to re-evalute our closed-minded, flavor wanting, chip way of thinking.  Today, those chips are Rusty’s Island Chips!!

Let’s begin with Rusty’s chip story:

Once upon a time, 1980, Rusty, while dreaming of far away places, came up with a plan to make Maui Potato Chips on the mainland. Six months later, Rusty was manufacturing Rusty’s Island Chips in his own little kitchen in Costa Mesa, Ca. His Maui recipe chips were selling like hot cakes in every gourmet market in Southern California. By 1990, Rusty’s Chips were in every major market as well. He was shipping chips to the east coast by the truck load and even to Hawaii.

Rusty’s little Maui chip company grew and grew. It got so big so fast that the stress was getting to Rusty, and he wasn’t surfing anymore. He did not have time to be on his sail boat. He wasn’t happy. So he let a big company swallow up his little company. Well the 1990’s came, and a lot of things did not survive the times and one was Rusty’s Maui Chips. The recipe was changed, the little kitchen turned into a factory, and the love for the best chips ever faded away…

Well, Rusty’s Back!!  He has his own chip kitchen in Huntington Beach and things could not be better….!!!

There are a few rules that any “regular” potato chip should follow if it wishes to be great.  First, it better come from some superb potatoes, because with regular potato chips we all know that you won’t get any help from salt if you are hoping to cover up the quality of the potatoes you are using.  Two, the CUT is key.  Just like with a great steak, people have different preferences as to what constitutes the best cut, and there are obviously many varieties.  Should we go thin, or should we go thick, or should we add a wavy ripple, or a criss-cross waffle cut??  What ever style of cut those great potato chips choose, they must fully commit to it, and try to make it the best variation of that variety!  Third, salt type, and level.  Very, very important when talking about regular potato chips.  Why?  Well, other than the frying oil used to crisp those potato slices up, salt is the only ingredient really triggering those taste buds to wake up and take notice!  The salt should compliment the chips, without overwhelming them.  All of these facets must come together in perfect salty, crunchy and potato-y chip harmony, if that little old “regular” potato chip wishes to grab our attention away from all of those flamin’ hot and spicy cheese dusting seasoned chips out there!  At this point it is probably needless to say but Rusty’s Island Chips have done just that!!  Perfect potato chip harmony!

Rusty’s Island Chips are really, really fantastic potato chips!  The chips are definitely thicker cut, although it seems like they may vary in thickness a little bit from chip to chip, leading us to believe (and we may have actually read this somewhere) that they could possibly be hand sliced.  If that is the case, that is some real dedication and attention to detail.  Both of which we recognize and appreciate!  The thicker cut potato chips deliver a deliciously hearty and firm crunch.  Nearly on the verge of tooth shattering, but not quite that crispy.  Probably most notable are the chips pure potato flavor.  Golden harvest yellow in color, reminiscent of the radiant California sun they are made in. The chips potato flavor is sort of tough to describe.  The chips deliver a deep and rich starchy potato flavor, with a touch of that nutty, rustic, burnt potato flavor that we really love on the tail end.  We wonder what type of potatoes Rusty is using here?  Usually, when we taste that dark-nutty-burnt notes, they are coming from Russet potatoes, but the coloring on these just do not coincide, so we’re guessing they are not Russets.  Some may consider these chips a touch too greasy, but we think that they are just right.  Salt coverage was a tad inconsistent, but the majority of the chips were more than amply covered.  Plus, whatever type of salt Rusty is using is fantastic!  It appears that it is a French Mediterranean Sea Salt.  Ooh la la!  We love and can really taste that slight mineral tang that the sea salt adds.

In the end, what we are trying to say is that these potato chips really just taste like some great fried potatoes.  And we love, love, love fried potatoes of all varietals!  Needless to say, these chips were very easy to devour (too easy, in fact…must find more)!!  We could not stop eating them!  We would not stop eating them!!  At this point we think that it is fair to say that these are among the best regular potato chips anywhere.  In fact, let’s not beat around the bush here, we’re going to go ahead and say it – Rusty’s Island Chips are so fantastic that they not only made our Top 5 Regular Potato Chips list, but it they’re sitting atop it!!  That’s right numero uno!!  Our #1 Regular Potato Chip of all-time!!  Now we only wish Rusty’s chips were more readily available in our neck of the Midwest (of course there’s always the internet).

We will sign off with what Rusty always says “Life is good….eat more chips!!!”  Well Rusty, that won’t be very hard when they are this good!!

So, what are your favorite plain or regular potato chips of all-time?  Make sure to tell us at our Potato Chip poll.

REVIEW: Doritos JACKED 3D – Bacon Cheddar Ranch

Rating: ©©©-1/4 chips  (notable)

Doritos Jacked 3D - Bacon Cheddar RanchDear Doritos,

We know that we have been consistently complaining about your JACKED line of chips for…well…since their beginning.  But, the fact of the matter is that when we look back through our reviews of your JACKED chips we actually find an awful lot of good, and even great, chips distributed throughout the JACKED roster!  Which is why we offer you the following confession:

We here at Chip Review have told ourselves that we are not the hugest fans of the JACKED line from Doritos.  However, despite the fact that we may not agree with the decision to change Doritos’ classic, light and crispy, tortilla chip to a BIGGER & THICKER version, we do recognize the reasoning behind it.  We simply feel like the chips are too big, and their texture is so thick that they no longer encompass the same light and crispy Doritos we have all loved for so many years.  That being said, the JACKED chip texture is slowly growing on us (especially the new 3D version), and when combined with your delicious BOLDER seasoning, the results more often than not we must admit, are some pretty great tasting chips!

How many of you out there remember Doritos original 3D chips??  If you do not, then you are younger than us, and you make us feel old!  Stop that right now!!  3Ds were a great snack from the 90’s, that most of us here at Chip Review enjoyed many a time.  The originals were light as air, soft crisp, with a very thin shell, and hollow in the middle.  The 3Ds were much too easy to pop one by one, over and over, until the bottom of that bag appeared.  They were unlike any other chip available on the market, and it appears as though Doritos is going for the gold medal in chip creativity once again!

Just look at that glowing Triforce shaped medallion chip above!  Have you ever seen, or eaten, anything quite like that before?!  Well, we have not, and we’re guessing that you have not either.  We have heard the 3Ds described as an Illuminati Symbol, or Egyptian Hieroglyphic, or our personal favorite, as ancient currency, used to buy things from a Mayan vending machine…  Plain and simple, these are some uniquely weird shaped chips no matter how you describe them!  Doritos you have wowed us again!

While technically speaking every Dorito that we have ever tasted has been of the three dimensional shape, these 3Ds do provide even more dimensional depth than any other Doritos, JACKED or otherwise, chips that came before!  For a second here let’s focus on what the heck these structures are…  This is 2015, and apparently, no longer will a thin-shelled, puffed, three dimensional Dorito from the past do the necessary snack trick.  Instead, Doritos top engineers have obliterated whatever drawing board they may have ever used, and veered towards ingenious structural JACKED creativity!!  These chips are cool!  These chips are originals!!  These chips are, not really even chips any longer!!!  The 3Ds are much more like Fritos corn chips in both flavor (corn-ful), and texture (dense crunch).  Albeit, corn chips that have been stacked and fused together to form a crunchy corn triangular pendant.  Do we love the shape?  Not really, but our mouths apparently do!  Because no matter how hard we tried, we could not stop ourselves from devouring them, one after one, until there were no more!

As for the scrumptuously sounding Bacon Cheddar Ranch seasoning… Well, these were not a hit.  A let down in fact.  We were certainly not as impressed with the BCRs as we were with the first JACKED 3D flavor – Jalapeño Pepper Jack.  Plain and simple, this is just a super mild Doritos flavor.  And mild and Doritos are two words that just don’t work together.    A little salty cheddar sprinkling here, a touch of fake smoke bacon there, and an unrecognizable (Cool) ranch do not work well together; especially when paired with the hearty, corn-ful 3D chips!  We wanted or expected more.  NO! We needed more!

Well, there you have it.  Anyone else out there tried them yet?  Thoughts?  As always we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree.  Let us know.

REVIEW: Dakota Style – Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips

** Updated: 7/14/15

Rating: ©©©-1/2 chips  (notable)

Dakota Style - Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips

We were recently sent a handful of new flavors to review from Dakota Style (so stay tuned for reviews of flavors like Cayena and Chili & Limon soon).  Included with these new flavors were a couple of Dakota Style’s traditional flavors that we had reviewed less than favorably in years past!  We thought we give them another try and make sure what we had originally tasted was an accurate representation of Dakota Style’s chips.  In the case of these salt & vinegar chips, it looks like the original samples we were sent and reviewed must not have been a very good example of the chips because this most recent bag was perfectly satisfactory and tasty.  Maybe the original sample was old or expired and the oil had started to leech out of the potato chips.  Not the case with this recent example.  This time around the chips were crispy, with a good amount of salt, and decent splash of lip pucking vinegar.  We could even taste the subtle potato flavor.

Our original review below:

Alright, we’re really starting to see a bit of a pattern here, and we’re not very happy about it.  Unlike Daniel Plainview, we are not searching for a ton of ‘Oil’ flavor in our chips!  Unfortunately we’ve discovered and tasted a lot of greasy chips from Dakota Style.  Maybe it’s the type of oil or potatoes they use, or maybe it’s the thickness or their cooking process, we’re not sure….

The greasy oil flavor overwhelmed the mild vinegar on these chips.  The salt tried to distract us, but wasn’t enough to draw our attention away from the oil.

Another ‘Industrial Strength’ bag of potato chips from Dakota Style.  Again, we’re not quite sure what this means, but these potato chips are on the crunchier side, as if they were kettle cooked, but then they are quite a bit thinner than kettle chips normally are.

To be honest, we don’t know what else to say about these.

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Larry The Cable Guy – Bacon Ranch Tater Chips

Rating: ©©©-3/4 chips  (notable)

Larry the Cable Guy - Bacon RanchAccording to the big red circle Larry’s new Bacon Ranch flavored Tater Chips were “Picked by YOU, the Facebook FANS!”.  Now, we didn’t see the flavor list that Larry’s fans were choosing from (or maybe it was submissions…), either way – Bacon Ranch seems a little on the safe, or predictable side, or maybe mainstream.  Personally we actually liked Larry’s other new 2015 Summer flavor more than Bacon Ranch –  Hollar-Peño Popper!

Correct us if we are wrong but does Mr. Cable Guy release two new Tater Chip flavors every summer?!  He’s a hard flavor tater working man!  Let’s go back through his flavor progression over the past four years.  Season 1 (initial release – four flavors): Cheese Burger, Barbeque Rib, Fried Dill Pickle and Buffalo Wing.  A great introductory line-up, showing us all that Larry meant business with his bar food themed flavors!  Season 2: Pass the Darn Ketchup and Tater Salad.  You had us as potato salad flavored chips!!  Season 3: Chili Cheese Fries and Biscuits & Gravy!  That’s right, lip-smackingly game changing biscuits & gravy flavored potato chips!!  This season: Hollar-Peño Popper and Bacon Ranch.  And, like we’ve already said above, we are on team Hollar-Peño!  We see a theme here, and it appears to be that each summer we love one flavor, and we could leave the other.  But, if that’s what it takes to find one really great flavor each summer, we’ll take it no problem!

Quick question before we delve into what we thought about these chips.  Why is it that every chip brand seems to have blue-ish-green and red specs in their ranch seasoning blend?!  Seriously, we have no idea!  Low and behold, guess what we found scattered all over Larry’s Bacon Ranch Tater Chips?  That’s right, blue-ish-green and red flecks of flavor.  As for the taste of this colorful seasoning – some of our tasters thought these chips were pretty lackluster,  describing them using such words as adequate and uninspired, (one taster used that worst two letter word in the English language O.K.!!).  While other tasters thought the Tater Chips were actually above-average in taste, but slipping on flavor accuracy.  The bacon aspect was pretty much just a splash of smoke, no real fatty-porky essence or depth.  Subtle would be a good description of it.  And the ranch flavor half brought plenty of garlic to the party, but seemed to have forgotten to pick up its buddies creamy and tangy along the way!  We really appreciated how savory the flavor combo was, but in the end, just too timid of execution.  We expected a more commanding combination!  And what we got was Larry’s Garlic Smoke Tater Chips!!

As for Larry’s potato chips, they are on the thinner side, and many of the chips still have their skins on them.  Really, they are just good old, “real” potato chips with a crispy-soft crunch.  The chips provide the prerequisite delicious potato flavor, and a perfect delivery device for all of Larry’s unique seasonings.  We will see you next summer Larry!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Wicked Mix – Chocolate-Laced

Rating: ©©©©-1/2 chips  (lip-smacking)

Wicked Mix - Chocolate LacedOne of these things is not like the others!  One of these things just doesn’t belong!!

One of these things are so lip-smackingly different and delicious, that they even made us sing this song!!

Every once in a while we cross paths with a new snack that just does not fit nicely into any one category.  Something new and unique!  Sure, we’ve tasted and reviewed plenty of snack mixes, and even some of those have been of the sweet chocolate varietal, but never before have we tasted such a deliciously odd combination of chocolate and savory flavors!!

Just a short while ago we reviewed another unique sweet and salty snack mix by the name of It’s Freakin’ Awesome Nosh Bag!  And just like we fell head over heals with that unique mix, we have found another tasty surprise in Wicked Mix’s Chocolate-Laced!

Wicked Mix has three flavors or varieties of their Wicked Mixes.  There’s Spicy Original, Spicy Hot Chipotle, and then of course these Chocolate-Laced.  Wicked Mix was kind enough to send us some of each to taste and review!  Yeah, we know-we know, it is a tough job but someone has got to do it!!  If we are being completely honest with you, we started our tasting process with the Chocolate-Laced flavor first because we were the least excited for it.  Sure, we appreciate sweet and salty combinations, kettle corn popcorn is one of our all-time favorite snacks, but more often than not snacks that are covered in chocolate, completely lose sight of the sweet and salty (or savory) juxtaposition!  Luckily for you, and us, and them, Wicked Mix has found that happy medium spot where every ingredient jives and comes together to form a unique flavor experience!

First, what exactly does Wicked Mix consist of?  Well, a delightfully nutty combination of Pecan halves, Cashews, Almonds, plus 4 other tasty morsels…?  Tasty morsels?  Huh?!  Don’t look at us, that is Wicked Mix’s own description.  We think that those other morsels would be the pretzels, Chex like criss-cross wheat crisps, and some unusual honey roasted sesame crisps.   Those morsels are then spiced with a wicked liquid brew containing 8 spices, some secret, some not, resulting in a tasty snack mix that cannot be adequately described, only experienced.  But, since we are in the business of describing snacks to you, so you can in turn decide if you want to experience them, let us try and give this a shot.  The Wicked Mix combo is impressively heavy on the nuts (which is always a good thing in our books) coated with a tangy, spicy, salty, savory, chocolatey-sweet flavor layer.  At first the seasoning confuses the palette, but if you stick in there long enough to let the flavors develop, and give it a real open minded shot, we think that your taste buds will end eventually thank you!!  To get a good idea of the depth of flavor going on with this mix, just take a look at some of ingredients (and mind you, in the end this is all finished with a drizzle of white and dark chocolates): distilled white vinegar, onions, ANCHOVIES, garlic, cloves, tamarind extract, fully aged peppers, salt, LARD, garlic, salt, Cayenne pepper & CELERY salt!!  Whoa!  That is one delicious mouthful!

Not to plagiarize a line from some of our own work, but this little snippet from a recent review just fits too perfectly not to use it – The myriad of contrasting ingredients are amazingly cohesive, and despite the unique combination they tasted oddly familiar?  And that’s just it, this Wicked Mix hits all of those familiar flavor notes our childhood Chex Mix, while at the same time, taking it somewhere new and delicious!

As always, these are our thoughts, we would love to hear what you think.  Agree or disagree, let us know.

REVIEW: Chef’s Shoppe – Sriracha Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©© chips  (“A” list)

Chef's Shoppe - Sriracha PopcornWe will round out our recent barrage of popcorn reviews (sorry to those of you who were actually expecting reviews of chips at a site called Chip Review….) with a review of Chef’s Shoppe Sriracha Popcorn.  Far and away, the best of the crunchy popcorn bunch!  In fact, this popcorn may just be some of the best popcorn we have ever tasted, anywhere!

We often wonder how many deliciously different salty snacks there are out there that the majority of us will never ever get the chance to try?  Those smaller local companies that only distribute in the surrounding area, or the little mom and pop stores that specialize in one specific type of snack, and unless you happen to travel to this specific town or region of the country you may never ever know of the delicacies that await you there.  Luckily for Chip Review we have a lot of friends and family out there that are always on the lookout for local snacks wherever they may be visiting.

The most recent example of this type of scenario took place a little while ago.  One of us from Chip Review walked into the office one morning and there sitting on our desk was a small collection of different flavored popcorn from some company called Chef’s Shoppe.  The flavors ranged from dill pickle to pizza to bacon cheddar to this Sriracha.

The Chef’s Shoppe is a Gourmet Kitchen Store (aka specialty cooking and food store) located in Edwardsville, Illinois (near St. Louis).  Luckily for all of us Chef’s Shoppe sells more than specialty kitchen tools and such.  They also offer more than seventy different flavors of popcorn.  According to the Chef Shoppe’s website:

In May 2012 the Chef’s Shoppe expanded again, taking over the 2,500 square foot space adjacent to the existing business and adding popcorn.  But they didn’t start small – offering over 70 flavors of popcorn every day, the Chef’s Shoppe entered the popcorn scene in a big way. Scott, having officially retired after 32 years with AT&T the year before, is the head “popologist”.  With the help of his merry band of popping and coating specialists they turn out hundreds of gallons of popcorn every week.  ALL are made fresh in house – ALL are available to taste before you buy – ALL are so delicious that picking just one is nearly impossible.

Well, the Chef’s Shoppe seems like our sort of place, and we hope the fine people of Edwardsville, and even St. Louis, continue to embrace and support it for a very long time to come.

Chef’s Shoppe popcorn is on the larger side of the popcorn spectrum, with very round, and softer-crunch kernels.  We would describe them as having a lot of popcorn meat, or body to them, that provides a great toothsome popcorn chew.  As for the Sriracha flavoring – WOWSERS!! Amazing, would be an understatement!  Easily the best Sriracha flavored snack of any type that we have ever tried.  We think this is due to a couple of delicious differences.  Similar to the Chef’s Shoppe’s beer flavored popcorn that we reviewed (and loved) a little while back, we were surprised to discover that this popcorn was not only Sriracha flavored, but mingling with some tangy cheese as well!  As popular as the Sriracha flavor has become lately we were really surprised to find that none of the other snacks we had reviewed had ever paired it with cheese…?  Well, we are here to tell you that the combination is delicious!  The cheese adds creamy and funky and salty layers to the spicy Thai chile notes.  the other difference with the Chef’s Shoppe’s Sriracha seasoning is something we can’t quite pinpoint?!  There is some unique ingredient, adding a background layer that is unlike any seasoning we have tasted before.  It is also as if the seasoning has been fermented a little, or something unique like fish sauce, or malt, has been added.  Just an extra layer of deliciously funky flavor depth.  Well, whatever it is, it compliments the spicy, garlic and Thai Chile seasoning amazingly!!  And the entire combination comes together to create some moist, rich, salty, funky, spicy, FANTASTIC POPCORN!!!  So fantastic that it has made our Top 5 Popcorn of All-Time!

In our review of Chef’s Shoppe’s Beer Popcorn we mentioned that if you ever find yourself traveling to, or through, Edwardsville Illinois, do yourself a favor and go try a couple, or fifty, different popcorn flavors from their amazing selection.  Well, now we would take that statement back and simply tell you that no matter where you are traveling to, or where you call your home, do yourself a favor and plan a trip to Edwardsville, Illinois, and go to Chef’s Shoppe for some of the best popcorn you will ever try!! Chef’s Shoppe is a hidden popcorn gem!  You’ve probably heard of destination dining before, but we may have stumbled onto something new here – Destination Snacking!!

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.

REVIEW: International Popcorn – Everything Bagel Popcorn

Rating: ©©©©-1/4 chips  (lip-smacking)

International Popcorn - Everything BagelIs popcorn the new universally adored crunchy go-to?!  Has it replaced chips or crisps as the language of snacks?!  If so, then International Popcorn makes total sense, and if not, well…at least we get to eat some more popcorn!

See, we told you that it was going to be popcorn crazy around here for a while, and we weren’t kiddin’!!!  We have so many different bags of popcorn to try and review!  It ridicu-POP-olis!!  Not that we are complaining in any way, shape or form, because we do love popcorn, and someone’s got to do it!

What is your favorite bagel flavor or type?  If you are like us, and you answer that question with Everything of course, then we like your style, and we’re fairly certain that you would really like this popcorn!  First and foremost, the seasoning is SPOT ON!!  If we had approached this popcorn with a blind eye, we still could have identified the flavor without a doubt, in not time at all.  Poppy seeds?  Check.  Sesame seeds?  Check.  Onion, garlic and salt??  Check – check – check!  To say that the flavor combination works would be silly as this traditional bagel flavor has been pleasing bagel lovers like us for many a year!  But, the real question is does this seasoning mix mingle well with popcorn?  We are very pleased to report that for the most part, YES IT DOES!!

International Popcorn has created a new salty snack combo that we have never tasted before.  Their popcorn is light and crispy, and yet full-bodied and toothsome.  The popcorn provides a perfect canvas to support and highlight the bold seasoning combination.  The one complaint that some of our tasters made mention of was that they felt like the popcorn was missing some aspect of richness, or creaminess, and that it came off a touch dry.  Other tasters felt like the coconut oil utilized by International Popcorn more than satisfied their fatty mouth feel craving.  Either way you crunch it, all tasters agreed that the seasoning was accurate, and worked with well with the popcorn.  So, if you happen to be looking for a healthier alternative to your calorie loaded everything bagel then help yourself to some International Popcorn!

As always, these are our thoughts. Agree or disagree, make sure to let us know.
